6 PM

Note
weight:64.6kg (rest day)

Bit more tired and headachy today, even slept in past 7am which is rare. Excellent from a work perspective though, another ~10 hours in the lib.

Friday Apr 29, 2022 #

11 AM

Running 20:04 intensity: (6:22 @1) + (13:42 @2) 3.98 km (5:03 / km) +26m 4:53 / km
ahr:132 max:146 weight:65.2kg

Meadows with spud in the nice warm sunshine. Feeling miles better than last week but still a very slight bit of heavy-headedness, hard to describe, just a bit spacy. Very hard to tell how the legs feel as they'd be feeling weird after a random week off anyway. Back on the HRM life too, the freedom was nice while it lasted. Will be interesting to see if I've been accurate in my estimated zones. Fractionally higher today but also expected after a week off.

Note
weight:64.8kg (rest day)

All this not running business has been quite good from a work point of view, 10+ hours in kings today including finding a Mars Climate Orbiter 1999 sized mistake at T-4 days to deadline. Hope Graeme isn't reading this.

Legs a bit more alive on the cycle. Headache similar still, coming and going, but I think a test jog tomorrow could be on the cards.

Some improvement today I think, still a little headache but apart from that feeling exceptionally normal.

Tuesday Apr 26, 2022 #

6 PM

Note
weight:64.7kg (rest day)

No real change again. Cycled to kings (walked to library all the other days since JK) which felt ok although legs still pretty stale. Feeling the headache in my ears a bit too, or at least they feel weirdly hot, L mainly.

Monday Apr 25, 2022 #

Note
weight:64.3kg (rest day)

No change, still the same little headache and legs more tired than I'd usually expect after walking up stairs. Fairly confident it's a bit of overtraining/under-recovery related fatigue, but don't feel "ill" in any way. Might write out a summary of the last few weeks later.
6 PM

Note

Summary of recent times, bit of a long read but useful for future reference:

Everything going ok through January, feeling fit, then did Lakeland Warrior on 4/5th Feb, ran well but also coming down with covid, so an enforced "down" week after that. In hindsight through, only one proper down week since the start of December was maybe not ideal and it's debateable whether covid counts as a down week, even though I was basically asymptomatic. Haven't been following any kind of training plan so basically as long as I wasn't ill or injured I did a "normal" week, generally whatever I felt like doing. Did a good job of keeping injuries at bay, but having always been injured every Spring in the past I've never quite had the full training+racing+uni work+socials combo for such an extended time before. Uni has been fairly consistently high workload and moderate stress but did avoid having to work any late nights.

Felt fine returning from covid, even the hard efforts, British Nights (19th Feb), BUCS (26/27th Feb), Pentlands race/long run (6th Mar). Then had Callander Crags CSC (Sat 12th Mar), followed by a big week of Tuesday meadows ints, FwtN and Sprint Scotland. Some alcohol both 12th and 19th Mar too. This was probably the first bit of 'overdoing it'. Then hard sessions:

22nd Mar: Crags hills, legs felt heavy. Chilled til the weekend.
26/27th Mar: British Champs, legs felt heavy again. A "one-off bad day" at this point.
30th Mar: Stubb field threshold, felt great. Happy days. A relaxing week at home and legs felt good all week.
2nd Apr: Shaftoe Crags middle. Legs decent but not amazing. Best ever ranking points :)
3rd Apr: Northern Champs. Legs not great, quite tired. Remember thinking afterwards something like "not sure how many more weekends I can keep burying myself".
5th Apr: Hard meadows ints, definitely not fully recovered from the weekend. Legs tired, but that was expected. End of the MPhys on 6th Apr too. Chilled til the weekend, but also SU ball on 7th Apr, where I remember having sit downs between dances as the legs felt so tired.
9th Apr: KF threshold, legs very heavy, cut it short. Only a week til the JK though so what are you going to do?
13th Apr: Not a hard session, but trying to revive the legs with a short effort and some strides. They still felt heavy though.
16th Apr: JK Middle. Thought the legs were feeling decent on the Friday, but nothing in them when pushing hard. Happy with the nav though so an ok result.
17th Apr: JK Long. Legs terrible, and brain quite bad too. Expectedly tired all afternoon/evening.
18th Apr: JK Relay. Legs average, bit stale but much more normal.
Then expectedly tired Tue/Wed but by Thu/Fri beginning to think it's not normal to be lasting this long...

In between those were lots of easy morning miles and a few longer runs. Hard to say no to morning miles, especially when Spud was going, and also because I was loving them and they kept me sane with uni.

Learning points:
1. Pencil in some down weeks and stick to them even if you feel "normal".
2. Don't race hard every weekend for so long. Fine to go orienteering (really helps with injury prevention for me) but don't bury yourself every time.
3. Include socials/alcohol in the training plan. Kind of already do this, and is mostly just common sense, but worth remembering. Probably less of an issue post-uni. Related point is factoring in work stress too.
4. Wear a heart rate monitor! Last one died March 2021 and never got round to getting a new one. Don't think I was really ever razzing easy runs though.

Any thoughts welcome... also realise this might look like an overreaction if I'm running happily in a few day's time.

Sunday Apr 24, 2022 #

Note
weight:64.6kg (rest day)

Was expecting/hoping to see some improvement, but feel about the same so not gonna run. No rush, couple chill weeks post JK then hopefully build back through May/June for selection races in July (and a summer of other fun things). Wouldn't want to derail exams either.

Saturday Apr 23, 2022 #

Note
weight:64.3kg

Bailing from Lakes, little bit worried about the heavy-headedness that's lingering post-JK, has felt about the same all week. Plus Blakeholme is usually infested with ticks and even though the risk is small, Lymes rn would be incredibly sub-optimal. Probably just need a bit more rest to be frank (or rather, not to be Frank ;) ).
6 PM

Note
(rest day)

Feeling better, less tired generally, just this little headache which I'm keen to shift asap. Picked up some iron pills in case that's part of the problem, which is probably unlikely but 14mg a day on top of my usual diet shouldn't harm (?)

Running 41:48 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (23:00 @2) + (3:48 @3) 7.66 km (5:27 / km) +196m 4:50 / km
weight:64.3kg

Crags plus 4 x 20s hill strides. Legs still feeling terrible on the climb, even with a tailwind, although they felt ok on the strides and better afterwards. Still tired in the head too, not sure at what point it becomes concerning. Took a covid test yesterday which was negative, and am sleeping decently and eating loads. Plan on going to the Lakes races this weekend purely for the enjoyment but may take Sunday easy if I still feel tired tomorrow.

weight:64.5kg

Another trip up APO, this time with Felix. Still feeling whole-body-tired. Did 5 x ~20s hill strides and felt a bit better by the end.

Running 46:45 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (1:45 @3) 8.69 km (5:23 / km) +119m 5:02 / km

APO seat lap with Todge and Finn. Tired all day again, maybe even more than yesterday, so came home from the library at 2:30 and had a lie down before this. Run was nice and slow though and felt better by the end.

Running 36:53 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (16:53 @2) 7.24 km (5:06 / km) +56m 4:54 / km

Easy meadows with Sam. Felt tired all day but legs fairly intact.

Orienteering 29:45 intensity: (45 @3) + (19:00 @4) + (10:00 @5) 6.87 km (4:20 / km) +73m 4:07 / km

JK Relay, 2nd leg. Team 3rd.

Set out 2mins down on OD but with Shminty close behind. Kept it clean through the woods but Shminty was closing and came past on the long leg. Just a cross country race til the end and I slowly got dropped, about 30s down in the end (less than the results say as I missed the finish punch first time round). Spud was solid as ever and finished 3rd. Looking forward to hopefully another battle at Scottish Relays.

Running 12:04 [2] 2.06 km (5:51 / km) +13m 5:40 / km

Orienteering 1:57:09 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (57:09 @3) + (45:00 @4) 18.65 km (6:17 / km) +532m 5:30 / km

JK Long at Pwll Du. 25th (19th overall).

Oh dear, big bonk. Felt ok off the start, solid to #1 and #2, then spooned #3 by 1:30, downhill and struggling to read the 1:15, should've slowed down and given it more respect. More misses at #5 (15s) and #6 (20s), #7 was on the path, then binned 2mins at #8, realised path looked better a few seconds into going high and then failed to keep contact. Low and behold that adds up to 3mins and Spud arrived to stabilise things. Almost got insta dropped but he missed #9 slightly so I could re-couple. Then did ok on the long leg, bad route to #12 (20s) then my best leg of the course to #13. Saw Spud take a gel to #14 so I did the same (45mins), but a silly move as it meant neither of us were navving properly and lost 30s.

Despite all these mistakes, the main problem of the day was only just starting. Legs were feeling tired and the elastic with Spud snapped on the steep bank halfway to #16, I even paused for a rest which was when I realised this was worse than your average tiredness. Tam came past leaving #16 and quickly dispatched me. I took a path option to #17 but then reduced to a walk even on a flat path, at which point I thought quite hard about retiring, but don't want to make a habit of retiring unless it's enforced by injury etc. Decided to take the 2nd gel (65mins), have a drink at the water point and hope that improved things. Pete came and went during this time. James appeared at #18 so I dug in and held on til #20, even sorted him out when he almost went to #25. But then Will and Hector caught on #22, and whilst James could accelerate to their pace, I most certainly could not.

Plodded up the hill to #23, using the time to decide low looked good to #25, but then got started on it before going to #24. Only 30s lost but a sign the brain was suffering in a similar way to the body. Got to #24 and decided high looked nice to #25 so did that. A decent route in the end actually. Then just waiting for the inevitable Sasha catch to complete the full monty, which came halfway to #27. At least it provided a last little boost which turned out to be enough to beat Davros by 4s! Happy not to Jonny Brownlee the run-in in front of the crowd too.

6th world uni's person I think, but a run like that isn't deserving of much. Hopefully yesterday and BUCS are enough but hey ho, time will tell.

Everyone has the odd bonk from time to time, but it is a bit worrying nonetheless. On paper I was well fuelled and well hydrated, and felt great on the shakeout. Remaining options are probably either I come down with some illness tomorrow/Tuesday or it's an overtraining/uni stress/sleep/fatigue from too much racing type of thing.

7 AM

Running 15:06 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (9:06 @2) 3.11 km (4:52 / km) +33m 4:37 / km

Shakeout on a road. Legs feeling good, just in time, although just to complete the trilogy the R shin was a bit niggly. Definitely will be fine, and achilles and knee fine too.
12 PM

Running 10:29 [2] 1.88 km (5:35 / km) +62m 4:48 / km

Orienteering 33:36 intensity: (30 @3) + (23:06 @4) + (10:00 @5) 6.39 km (5:15 / km) +100m 4:53 / km

JK Middle at Clydach Terrace. 9th.

Overall fairly solid but yet again the legs just had nothing, properly trundling along. Maybe as a result I was fairly clean, 5s hesitations in the circle on #6 and #10, then ~15s on #17, distracted by another control and maybe didn't properly check direction. I'll take the result, 4th world uni's eligible, but a little annoying to be 20s behind Tam and Spud and it feels so in reach given how much I was trundling.

Running 7:31 [1] 1.43 km (5:15 / km) +15m 4:59 / km

Running 42:18 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (22:00 @2) + (12:18 @3) 7.21 km (5:52 / km) +256m 4:59 / km

Stoodley, plus 3 x 30s uphill in terrain on the way back. Some L achilles twinges would you believe it, on stretching though so not the most worrying version. R patella fine until the last descent down the Clough where it was about a 2 again. Both should be fine for the weekend just not ideal to have playing on the mind.

Running 45:06 intensity: (24:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (1:06 @3) 6.72 km (6:43 / km) +176m 5:56 / km

Loop round the moor with Dad, worked ok with me going in the terrain off the side of the paths but still very chill. Quads finally feeling a bit less tired I think. R patella generally better again but slightly worse on the descent, feels like being 16 again.
4 PM

Cycling 44:51 intensity: (23:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (1:51 @3)

14.8k, +310m, 19.7kph

Easy Sykes Gate loop, not really ideal for the R patella but also not too concerning and was nice to get out in the sun.
5 PM

Was thinking about sessioning, but legs feeling tired still. Easy Crags then back round for a little 3 min effort up the top half again, then 6 x 30s hills. R patella better than yesterday afternoon but still noticeable.

weight:63.7kg

Morning seat lap solo dolo. Quads still tired but just took it very chill and felt better by the end.
5 PM

Running 48:35 intensity: (18:00 @1) + (27:00 @2) + (3:35 @3) 8.92 km (5:27 / km) +160m 5:00 / km

Soggy hermitage, again taking it nice and chill. Somehow tweaked the R patella during the day (haven't left the flat so literally just standing up or something) so it was grumbling a bit on this. R one is almost always fine though. Calves tight too. Did bump into Todge, Max and Matt though for 5mins which was lovely.

S+C 20:00 [1]

No day off running for 5 and a bit weeks so thought today is as good a day as ever. L quad feeling domsy.

Running 1:37:23 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (1:00:00 @2) + (22:23 @3) 17.02 km (5:43 / km) +538m 4:56 / km
weight:64.1kg

PFH. Certainly felt like I was sending the quads further into the hole of achiness, but hopefully they'll start to come around in a few days. Unsure how best to make that happen though. Calves super tight/sore on the climb, as if I'd done a track session yesterday, so that was quite slow and walked more than usual, but they came round after the top. Aerobically and metabolically(?) good though, felt great up Morningside Rd.

weight:64.4kg

4 x 6mins (1min) on the KF, avg 3:41s.

Plan was 6 reps but legs felt bad so called it at 4 rather than keep digging into the hole. Kinda heavy today, and it felt entirely in the quads. Someone also nabbed my thermal to top it off. Not really the confidence boost pre JK that would have been nice but ah well, I've made it to April uninjured (touch wood) so plenty to be happy about.

BnB with Spender, Todge and Stansfield. Glorious and sunny so tops off round braids. Good vibes all round as I finally saw the back of the MPhys project this morning with the presentation, has been a bit of a struggle for most of the past 8 months. Shins all good even with the tarmac yesterday, how times have changed.

5 PM

Running 1:04:52 intensity: (16:00 @1) + (21:00 @2) + (10:52 @3) + (13:00 @4) + (4:00 @5) 14.06 km (4:37 / km) +63m 4:31 / km

6 x 3mins (2mins) on the meadows tarmac.

Nice little pack of Spud, Rodrigo, Joe (those 3 generally a bit ahead), Davros and Corn. Just tucked in and tried not to look at the watch too much, and happy to see about 3:20s avg. Big thanks to Davros especially for letting my stare at the back of his head for a few reps. Legs definitely still a bit tired from the weekend but decided that I'd be running slower even if I had fresher legs if I sessioned tomorrow.

Running 21:56 intensity: (13:56 @1) + (8:00 @2) 4.21 km (5:13 / km) +56m 4:53 / km

4 PM

S+C 40:00 [1]

Sorry state of affairs, only 6 of us and no Dave. Squatted and deadlifted 40, did a decent weight on the calf raise machine, then some core and a few other bits and bobs.

Northern Champs, 1st.

Two laps of Dukeshouse Wood, with no map turnover, 1:15 and a slightly old map so there were some pretty tricky bits. Tried to be careful and safe which went well until #10 where I lost 1:30. Don't know why making a mistake causes my legs to feel horrible immediately after but it seems to be a theme. Struggled to get moving again but kept things clean enough and knew the fitness should pull through so just kept chugging away. Lost my head a bit on the 2nd last control (45s) but had a 3min cushion over Duncan, who it's fair to say knows the area pretty well. Job done, on we go.

Shaftoe Crags middle.

Great fun, just pinging around and running as fast as you could in the first half and then into some more crags in the second half. Ran with Gooch from #12 onwards as we had the same course til the 2nd last control and he was moving pretty well so was tough just to keep up. Only time losses were a 5s banana on #16 and 5s in the circle at #19. Would've been 2nd on the juniors, about 50-60s behind Pete.

Usual Stoodley then out to Little Holder Stones then straight lined it across past Two Lads, so about 20mins of terrain. Mostly frozen and a dusting of snow on the tops, so slightly dangerous achilles conditions but it seems ok. Was aiming more for 75 but hey ho, could be the perfect anti-taper.
