Running warm up/down 12:00 [3] 1.3 mi (9:14 / mi) +40m 8:26 / mi
ahr:176 max:191

I think such a long warm up in the heat only made me more susceptible to the heat's evil grasp of my physical abilities during the race.

Orienteering 54:57 [5] *** 3.1 mi (17:44 / mi) +62m 16:41 / mi
ahr:194 max:208 13c

First, it was 85 degrees out. And we were in the desert. It was very hot and there were plenty of snake sighting today, so I was running in o-socks, pants, and gators.

Second, the first control was in the wrong place. So that really sucked because I thought I was doing really poorly from the beginning. It also took me 8 min to finally find it, so that was a waste of good energy in the heat.

Third, I did not let that stop me. My compass work was awesome for the rest of the course. I slightly overran #4.

Overall, my navigation was on point. I really have been on a whole other level lately. My physical abilities were definitely hindered by the heat and wish I had been more prepared (carried water?).

But I won, so yay!

NOTE: I did not mispunch, control 12 was booted last minute because of a snake nest.

Orienteering 59:21 [4] *** 2.6 mi (22:50 / mi) +90m 20:37 / mi
ahr:175 max:194 8c

As if I didn't have a good enough time in the heat, John sends us off to pick up controls with a wonderfully designed training.

Ben and I were paired together for a corridor training. We picked up a majority of the long advanced controls so we went quite far away.

At one point, we went through 50 meter swamp with reeds taller than both of us. At least it was refreshing in the heat, but the water was up to our waist (but we wanted to stay in our corridor!).

Overall, we did a great job and our compass work was great. Also our ability to assign features on the map to what we saw in the terrain was spot on.

Jogged in the beginning, then running with so many flags and navigating got difficult.

Running 26:20 [3] 3.0 mi (8:47 / mi) +60m 8:16 / mi
ahr:191 max:206

I ran 3 miles according to google maps. I also know this and the climb because I run this route every Monday.

My GPS watch is making me sad...it thinks that I had a 191 avg heart rate to run at 12 min / mile pace :( (2.2 miles)
