Orienteering race (SA - P5 Kingsmere) 1:48:27 [0] 6.72 km (16:08 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Trail Talon 250

Can I blame today's debacle on having gotten up at 2am to participate in a special work project from 03:30 to 10:00?

And here I was all like, "Yes! The one day our meet is an hour later than normal -- perfect! And a nice short short, only 3.4 km -- even more perfect! I'll be done in 45 minutes, mayyyybe an hour, then can just go home and nap."

Ha!

Had a good first couple of controls, the first of which I seem to have been the first there given the lack of footprints in the snow (snow!). Then, the rest of the course happened...

5 was the worst. Searched and searched and couldn't find it. Just couldn't make heads or tails of all that rock. I think I was close at some point as I'm fairly sure I was at one of the cliffs with the green -- I think I just wasn't high up enough. Will see what RG looks like. Then I said to heck with it and had an inner temper tantrum while bailing north. I was of at least 75% of a mind to quit at this point. My clothes were well on the way to soaking wet; I had already come as close as I ever have to breaking a leg when it fell through a hidden gap between rocks; and the going was just generally treacherous given the snow cover. [oops! forgot to also mention I could hardly see as my glasses were covered in melted snow and fogged up every time I stopped :P ] As I grumped my way all the way to 6 (which felt a lot farther than it looks on the map, *if* I was anywhere near 5... hmm) for a decision point to either call it quits or have a clear relocation point to help me go back for 5, stubbornness won over and I decided to head back and find that $%^& 5 and try to finish the course.

Sure enough 5 was a lot higher than I had pictured. But I was glad to have finally found it.

8 was tricky as there were a bunch of us who had found a pit but it wasn't one of the two pits on the map since the other pit with the control was not where it would have been. So that was another time eater.

No precise compass work on the last several legs as my hands were too cold/stiff to twist the housing... so fumbled my way through the end. (Not that I would have been precise anyway! :D )

14 went a little wonky because I was going to use the start flag as my attack point, but I guess the flag was removed after the start window closed, so I overshot the start triangle and ended up at the road. Fortunately not too expensive a mistake, as I was more than ready to be done at this point. [edited post-RG to add: hmm, maybe I didn't join the trail until past the start flag -- maybe it wasn't removed after all. not sure.]

This is one I'm just happy to have survived... Here's hoping winter holds off a little longer so we can get in the last couple of meets non-"extreme-O" style.

What better than a trip to the thrift store to browse the VHS/DVD section searching for exciting new finds... like Yoga for Athletes! Yours (mine) for only $0.99.

Ok so it's probably redundant, I imagine yoga of any kind is good for athletes or for just about anyone at all. But wow, lots of good stretches in there.

Some good wind to help kick my cardio back in gear (so to speak). Have done hardly anything the last few weeks.

Indoor rock climbing (class) 1:00:00 [0]

Fun night. Started learning the technique of... of... can't remember what it's called. When you bring a leg up high to either put your weight over the ankle and head over in that direction, or in other cases to help you reach up high with the opposite hand.

This time we bouldered at the start, then top-roped later. Bouldered the usual whites and oranges and started a first attempt at a red but didn't get far at all.

Top-roped three 5.7s, one of which last week I could only just barely manage to touch the top with one hand and this week could get both hands solidly on there. There's a real mental game, fighting the inner "I can't do it"s at certain points which for me tends to often happen right near the top. Then tried a 5.8 for the first time. Might have better luck with fresh muscles but tonight couldn't get past a certain point pretty low on the wall still. But fun to try. So, instead ended with a nice easy 5.6.

Felt tonight like there was maybe some new hand strength that wasn't there before, which came in "handy" on several occasions.

My climbing partner tonight was a beast, tiny but heck could she ever move up that wall, conquered three 5.8s. Inspiring!
