Started 2 minutes before Joe, so the goal was to finish ahead of him.
On the way to 1, I genuinely thought I was handed the wrong map or control sheet or something because I just could not see the cliff on the map, which was apparently hidden behind a contour or something. Took a good route to 2, but again just didn't see the cliff symbol so I just sort of wandered around the rocks not really knowing what I was looking for, and ended up seeing Joe enter as I exited after punching. Sigh...
Then I didn't see him at all until right before we attacked 9, where I started to slow down thinking I may have overran because the vegetation already changed and it seemed distinct to me. Could've ran 5 better by recognizing earlier on that I had to actually go uphill rather than sidehilling.
Joe caught me up at what might've been the worst time for the both of us, as it was probably the most difficult control and we both wanted to get out of each others sights' and thought the other knew what he was doing more than it was in reality, so we stopped short and I ended up relocating off the bend in the ditch after getting distracted by a bunch of tiny cliffs which may or may not have been mapped.
Had an alright race after that despite knowing that we completely trashed our race with that mistake. Never saw Joe again, until about a minute after I finished. 16 was strange and I had to stop and do a 360 to see the control, the terrain looked a lot more complex in reality than the simple hillside. I then made a bonehead mistake on the way to 18, thinking I would hit one of the pits no matter what, overran downhill, and had to relocate off of the rocks NE of it. Otherwise yeah, a good finish. Happy with the weekend, I feel like I'm more in the racing mindset than beforehand, which can only be good news for West Point. I have a bit to go in terms of simple running ability, but that will come with time. I'm always happy to go out into the woods and spend time with friends, and I feel a lot more refreshed coming back into Tufts now.
