Canadian Orienteering Champs - Middle. 2nd behind Eric Kemp by 7s. Considering how nervous I was for this race because of the WCOC middle, I am really happy with this one. WinSplits and LiveLox.

Small hesitation inside the circle at 4. Another small inaccuracy inside the circle at 6, but I knew I was quick here. 7 was the only mistake: the plan was to run down the spur, find the reentrant with rocks systems on both sides, and stay in the low ground between rocks into 7. Ended up taking the wrong reentrant up and had to relocate off another control. I didn't see that 7 is actually on a contour hill (look at the tick marks in the SW part of the circle). I'm proud of how quickly I noticed, corrected, and moved on from this mistake, much like yesterday's long at 19.

The entry to 13 after crossing the trail was difficult to conceptualize, leading me to take more climb than necessary as I couldn't quite tell what was up and what was down.

Note

I’ll post maps and writeups in a couple days, but COC has gone really well for me. Won the sprint, second in the long by 42s.

Run warm up/down 15:33 intensity: (1:33 @1) + (9:40 @2) + (4:20 @3) 1.51 mi (10:18 / mi)

Orienteering 1:22:44 intensity: (10 @1) + (3:49 @2) + (4:42 @3) + (1:08:14 @4) + (5:49 @5) 8.12 mi (10:11 / mi) +453m 8:41 / mi

Canadian Orienteering Champs - Long. Really solid race with a slow start and too conservative of a finish. Ended up in 2nd behind Eric Kemp by 42 seconds. WinSplits and LiveLox.

Straight route to 6 through the reentrant was best in my opinion. I should've taken the saddle S of 8 (W of major cliff) as I ended up hesitating as I approached below. Left 10 reading 17 as 11 and made a bad route choice as a result, which resulted in significant climb on the approach but not too much time loss actually.

I'm really proud of 19, not because I executed it well, but because I slowed down realizing I was making a mistake by going up the reentrant and seeing a massive boulder, quickly relocated and attacked to only lose a bit of time. That was the most in control I've felt while making a mistake maybe ever.

Then, after making a mistake and knowing my race was really good so far, I got too conservative with my route choices to 20 (run till I see the trail and turn) and 22 (should've taken the main trail longer). Ran down the rocks to 23 knowing that when it levels out and the rocks stop I should see it, which was the right idea but I should've chosen the runnable route down, not over the rocks.

Orienteering 17:49 intensity: (21 @1) + (2:48 @2) + (10:31 @3) + (4:09 @4) 2.17 mi (8:13 / mi) +48m 7:41 / mi
ahr:157 max:173 shoes: Icebug Spirit8 OLX

Canadian Orienteering Champs - Sprint. Beat Eric Kemp by 5s to win. WinSplits and LiveLox.

Good race except for 10, where I somehow ended up both crossing the trail without realizing it and didn't piece together the depression until too late. Cost me maybe 50s, but even worse I saw Boris with his kid as I made the mistake. Was maybe too conservative to 12. Fell over at the finish as I tried to brake too hard.

Run warm up/down 6:07 intensity: (25 @2) + (5:42 @3) 0.53 mi (11:32 / mi) +19m 10:23 / mi

Run warm up/down 5:41 intensity: (7 @1) + (1:51 @2) + (3:43 @3) 0.42 mi (13:32 / mi)

Orienteering 33:59 intensity: (3:52 @1) + (18:16 @2) + (11:51 @3) 2.15 mi (15:48 / mi) +110m 13:38 / mi

Canadian Orienteering Champs - HPP Relay for fun. Was with Boris and Alli to constitute team "other" in the advanced category (one step down from elite). What a horrendous race from start to finish. Missed so much stuff during the mass start that by the time I made it to 3 I knew it was game over, so I chose to follow a trail off the map to 5. Punched 14 and thought I was at 13 so I got mega confused while everyone watched me turn around a whole lot. Hit 16 and thought I had another control briefly.

Boris then absolutely annihilated the second leg with Alli finishing strong to give us a comfortable victory in our category, despite my best efforts otherwise.

Orienteering 18:13 intensity: (6 @0) + (10:53 @1) + (7:14 @2) 0.94 mi (19:23 / mi) +36m 17:18 / mi
ahr:123 max:146 shoes: Icebug Spirit8 OLX

Model map of the middle. Super buggy, and my confidence was decently shook as I struggled to rectify the smaller details of the map with the terrain, ever standing still.

Orienteering 33:26 intensity: (9:28 @0) + (19:05 @1) + (4:53 @2) 1.75 mi (19:06 / mi) +92m 16:25 / mi
ahr:112 max:139

Long model map. It reminded me of West Point, where every feature was actually just some type of rock: boulder cluster? Rocks. Knoll? Grassy rock. Bare rock? Flat topped-rock. I took some time to see if I could effectively differentiate them but decided come race time that they all were the same. Again, confidence a little shaken here. I didn't feel comfortable on either of the models.

Run warm up/down 18:49 intensity: (1:27 @1) + (10:34 @2) + (6:37 @3) + (11 @4) 1.08 mi (17:25 / mi) +137m 12:30 / mi
ahr:144 max:168 shoes: Icebug Spirit8 OLX

Orienteering 47:10 intensity: (2:27 @2) + (18:05 @3) + (23:54 @4) + (2:44 @5) 4.2 mi (11:14 / mi) +296m 9:13 / mi
ahr:169 max:209 shoes: Icebug Spirit8 OLX

A pretty good race with some problems. I exited the trail junction to 5 thinking as long as I end up on a trail that doesn't go downhill I'm golden, but nonetheless ended up on the wrong trail and lost 45-60s. Relatively clean after that, a few 5-10s inaccuracies here or there, then an awful 13. Counted trails and essentially put away the map, ended up at the wrong hairpin and had to climb back to rectify the mistake, at least 2:00 on that control alone.

Lesson learned: listen for the fat lady.
