Note
I've been trying to sell the sport to my GP for the last four years. Each visit he's asked more inquisitive questions.... This last time I left knowing he'd never embrace it. One of his many questions was, " If you're a good runner, would you be successful?" I said ....."mmm doubtful. I think I could beat most of the over 35's in some kind of race 800m-3hrs. But, ultimately, the best live near terrain, live near maps and are way smarter than me. My Dr. is a legend around these parts for both his profession and running. He was obviously interested. He ran the town sprint set up during the pandemic and didn't win. By a long way. So I could tell it irritates him.
The conversation ended with me telling him, ultimately, the sport is ultra competitive and it takes you to places you'd never, ever end up going. My wife doesn't orienteer, but she loves Denmark et al. Never questions going to an O festival , because it's always somewhere special. Somewhere new.
NB. The Conversation went deeper. Like where do you go to get better. What's your aims etc. Mikel, RMOC came up. I probably should have said SkyPilots, but I'm thinking their emphasis is Score. And that's not my bag. Maybe his.
