WMOC Long B Final. Gribskov
Promised a lot more but generally happy. In contact with the leaders until 6. Then made a terrible route choice to 7. 3mins
2:30 on 13,
4 mins on 14.
Had a few other bobbles here and there. Could have won this one but not too upset. 11 mins down on winner. 14th/70. This was my type of terrain. paths with contours. Looking forward to Laramie. Hopefully get some good competition and I stay fit.
Tony Holland passed unexpectedly today. Very sad news. On a positive turns out Chris Terkelson from O Track remembers me from Halden with Grant Bluett!! Crazy.

Very easy on Model Long. Aim was to stay in contact with the map. I roughly did. But I think my compass is off. On some bearings I went extra slow and was still 30m off over 200m of ground. Tomorrow the aim is to go steady. NO 5 MIN mistakes!!

12mins total.
Had a first and two 3rds on a couple of legs. Definitely not as bad as yesterday but I know can can do much better.

WMOC Forest Qualifying.
Everything about this was in my favour. Fast, easy navigation.......Total balls up. Worst I've ever performed. The positive.....It cannot get worse tomorrow.
No breakdown I'm just too annoyed,

Orienteering 40:24 [3] 4.84 km (8:21 / km) +123m 7:24 / km

Model Event....I don't think I used this to my advantage. Started off taking it seriously then realised it was just a train from one control to the next. Stopped watched the Scandinavians and realised they were just taking in the contour detail, veg boundaries, paths not marked. All the things I was blocking out on bearings. It was the small details they were appreciating for tomorrow. One major concern for me is how dark the forest was. The weather was poor in the morn. With my eyesight rapidly getting worse by the month it was obvious tomorrow could be a very long, long day for me. Having said that, despite the dense canopy the floor was amazingly fast. Even in green areas. The best are going to smash this forest. There are areas where the contour detail is too vague for me to interpret. Anyway..... Bring on the next two days....just so I can take the family down that end of the beach! (It's embargoed at the moment).

Wake up run at Threshold most of the time. Felt OK. Not Fantastic. Lovely morning.....Again. This never gets old.
HR wasn't accurate.
12 PM

Orienteering 13:02 [3] 2.94 km (4:26 / km) +3m 4:25 / km
ahr:152 max:166

One of my better days. I've not raced like this since '88 British Schools. (But I've not orienteered for 29 of those years!) Great race.
20 secs at 2 due to control wrong side of hedge.
15secs at 5 route choice.
15 secs at 12 wrong control. Total=45secs
7:03 min/mile pace. yesterday...8:17. Much improved.

5th/88. 24 secs behind winner Remigijus Masilionis. (He was 3 secs from yesterday's cut)

12 PM

Orienteering 19:46 [3] 3.75 km (5:16 / km)
ahr:150 max:169

WMOC Sprint Qualifying......loved it. Disappointed, but loved it. Never really done a proper sprint and the intensity and margin for error was amazing. Not going to go into all 24 controls but here's the gist...
1 wrong route choice 46th place!!!! Never ever got those 30+ secs back!
6 route choice 20secs
8 wrong control 1min 15 This was the biggy.
The rest was hesitation etc.
I was 1st and 3rd but it was over after 1. 30 secs!! average placing was between 12 and 30 on most controls.
41st. 1min 10secs off Qualifying. 4mins 34 behind Mattias Niggi. Who's the Shit apparently.
NB Dad made a great point.... Everyone here looks like Gods and Goddesses. Maybe in another life. Great day.
