Trail 1:04:12 [3] 12.2 km (5:16 / km) +142m 4:58 / km

SRC with Mike and a small group through a new bit I hadn't been through before. Went along North St, then right at the entrance to the dear park and through Rownham Plantation. There is a nice steep technical path through there and lots of bluebells. Then went along the top until the Zig Zag path where we cut down vertically and then round the bottom.

Orienteering race 42:26 [3] 7.1 km (5:59 / km) +186m 5:17 / km

JK Relays - Pippingford Park

Went out 3rd leg with Tom D and Abi K. Overall a decent run but I missed punching the bridge control... Awful route into 1, then a slight miss on 3. Had my map orientated wrong out of 7 so took quite a big banana. There were huge tracks across the moor. Didn't realise there was a gaffle at the end of the moor so quite lucky I went to the right control there as I was in a train across the top. Seems like a better route for the long leg was sticking on the path longer and then cutting across rather than past 96. Hit everything else cleanly but was dead into the finish.

Orienteering race 1:40:40 [3] 19.5 km (5:10 / km) +244m 4:52 / km

JK Long - Holmbush & Buchan Country Park

Started off steady and hit 1,2,3,4 well. Then decided to go straight on a bearing into 5. This would have been fine, if my bearing hadn't been off by about 45 degrees and didn't count the paths properly. I hit the path way too early and relocated to the wrong path before wondering around for ages before realising and then coming straight into the control. By this point I realised that the white forests were not easy running so took the path route to 6. Was wondering if the top path to 8 was best but some elites took it as well so it can't have been terrible. Path route to 9/10 also seemed reasonable looking at the splits. Tried to cut in too early for 11 and lost 30s hesitating. Decided to go straight to 12 but then promptly started looking for 2 (thinking it was 12). Found 2 but the control code was wrong (216) and then hunted around looking for my control. Think the route down to the path was slow after relocating but was trying to simplify navigation after the mistake. Followed too much into 14 which meant a miss on 13 and then into the map change.

The first section after the map change was a technical bushy section. Tried to go off too fast not taking into account the bush cover which was very accurately mapped it turned out. Was then good into 18,19,20,21 once I started to trust the map. Spent a long time deciding the route choice for the long leg and in the end went near to spectator through the fields. Still think this was best looking at the map. Similar long leg into 23, decided to go straightish but could have crossed the stream straighter. Lost 4 minutes on the leader so would be interested to see their route. Huge banana into 24 from another awful bearing. It makes sense now why I was so confused as I crossed a path I never intended to go across. Spent a long time (2-3 mins) at 24 planning the long leg. Went straight to the river and across paths which was reasonable. Then good through the last 3 controls but not so great overall. Think I need more long leg practice which is hard to come by at local events.

Orienteering race 53:52 [3] 7.6 km (7:05 / km) +87m 6:42 / km

JK Middle - Ambersham Common - M21L

Tried to be aggressive from the start as is necessary in the middle and went well into 1. However, then got completely lost into 2, ending up back near the start. I came out onto the path near the junction and instead of carrying on (on a good bearing to the control), didn't look at my compass and went haring along the path.

Regained flow after that and picked good routes to 8. The open was quite rough so took the path route to 9. Lost some time on 10 not taking a good bearing from the pits and then a slow route to 11. Straight to 12 was hard work, the leaders cut to the path. Was slow into 14 as there was an unmapped fallen tree next to the control (which was next to an unmapped knoll). Then took a terrible bearing out to 15 and ended up first around near 13 and then in the OOB section before realising I was the wrong side of the valley.

Was then clean into the finish for a run with 2 big mistakes.

Orienteering race 19:26 [3] 4.0 km (4:52 / km)

JK 2017 Sprint - Brunel University

First time doing a sprint so didn't really know what to expect. Made a few wrong 50/50 calls but the course was finely balanced so these didn't really matter. Worst mistake after the map flip not seeing an overprinted wall and going into a dead end but apart from that just needed to run faster. SIAC is good fun though!
