Jukola first leg, for KR second team 80th, 5.17 down on winner What an experience, where to start! Pre-start was just unbelievably exciting with the crowds and the music, with the pirates of the Caribbean theme tune at 10:57 only adding to this. Set off hard and made it unscathed to the start kite, thanks to a lot of pushing and shoving. Big path plod for the first leg and soon slotted in next to Martin Bostrom. Hit the first control bang on, which was a nice nerve settler. Lost some time at #3 when I must have ran within metres of the control on the wrong side of a crag - good news is that many many others did this as well so it wasn’t too damaging. Got into a full-on control-punching shoving fight at #5 with some other lads - absolute great fun. Then I realised that Jere (KR’s first team runner) was on my shoulder so we shared some codes and got through the next few all good - they were mostly very technically easy. Had no idea of positioning at this point but knew I must be high up cos I was being passed by the likes of IFK and stora tuna first team. Unfortunately lost time on the long leg when I got shafted by going through a disgusting bit of rough open when I should have stuck with the larger train. Dropped places big time here which was annoying but not much I could do. Took a disgustingly whacky route on the last longer leg, just following some lads who were clearly rage splitting and not really navigating. Did briefly find myself at the front of a pack here which was amusing. Made it through the next few tricky controls safe and nailed the one in the intricate contour section with a few other guys. One of them said ‘hallelujah’ upon finding it - you and me both brother. Then it was just a case of a testosterone-fuelled bash through the torrential rain to the finish. Overall, a crazy race which was definitely the most memorable I’ve done so far. Navigationally easy, but this just meant the trains and speed were utterly relentless and really felt like I was on the edge for the entire time. Was meant to be running long night until about 24 hours before but very glad I got the chance to do this. Team was just edged out of a top 30 in the end but that’s still an excellent result. Good stuff - great fun trip!

Final jukola technical training doing alternate legs with gg. Some tough sections in here but mostly navigated well, bar some very minor misses. All about keeping contact in the tricky bits and being purposeful in the other parts. Forest was teeming with orienteers - exciting times. Thought gg had gone and knocked himself out at one point when his head came perilously close to a rock, but fear not, no damage was done.

Jukola training with gg Another day, another peng area. Did this as mass start with semi regular regrouping which worked nicely. Running and navigating well through the terrain and was picking out the features better than yesterday. One mistake was in a super intricate bit where I identified the wrong rock slab, but still corrected well so not too much harm done. Just a pleasure again to run in such a nice area - big thumbs up.

NightO training in chasing start format. Set off at 11.42pm which is pretty nuts, and it still wasn’t even remotely dark at this point. Didn’t manage to hold off the chasers for long after getting stuck in some grot but held on to the pack for a few controls. Lost them when I couldn’t find the actual tape for a control. No major mistakes, just a few hesitations and some clunkiness throughout, but that’s alright. I was allowed to borrow Aapo’s lumonite lamp though, so it was easier doing night o with a collapsed sun slapped to the noggan. No wonder they’re good at this when they can see more than they can during the day.

Jukola training with gg First time ever in Finland for me which was very exciting. Gotta say, it does not get much better than this. Peachy runnable forest, good nav, beautiful weather, evening atmosphere. Just an absolute treat. Navigation was pretty good - some tightening needed in terms of picking out features but was moving well and keeping a lid on things. We met up at common controls as well, which was appreciated. Overall, top notch training. And now we’re staying in a house with a sauna and a hot tub which overlooks the actual race arena itself. Luxury jukola did someone say?

Churchill ints 5x(800(60), 300) with 3 mins between sets. Rest between reps was a bit longer cos I waited for others. Real hot and sticky day today which meant I was on the defensive and working hard from the very start. Front running but kept the pace strong and worked nicely down to 2:18 for the 8 and 46 for the 3, which isn’t bad in the clompers. Overall, a good sesh and was nice to just really work hard, in comparison to the short reps we’ve done recently.

WD. Witnessed a good old fashioned bike/pedestrian crash and then stepped in to offer some measured diplomacy and appeasement - the chamberlain of modern times.
