British relays - first leg - 5th
Silly silly pace off the start (is the Pope catholic?) which meant I was bit off the pace when striking out with Luke and Phil, who would turn out to be my buddies for the day.
Took a brief lead to #2 and then did not see the front four ever again after we had a longer gaffle to #3. Did some silly micro-nav to #8 but successfully managed to identify the right side of the valley for #9, which is seemingly beyond people whose name starts with P and ends with hil.
Working well with Davros and co despite some scraps, although did fall up to my thigh in a bog which did not help terrain speed.
Pack thinned to the original trio for the last few and I developed the completely irrational but totally understandable urge to not get ruined on the run-in and thus ended myself accordingly.
So overall an excellent race - had a longer gaffle but just did not see the front pack at all, apart from a brief glimpse at #8. No worries though, held the pace and nav well, and was very rewarding to see some top notch runs from shminty and GG to take the win. A successful weekend.

British champs M20E - 1st
A long old day out in the forest today. Set off moderately and was binned by Pete who then reappeared when I faffed about at #3 for a bit - rhododendrons just not what I was expecting.
Pushed on after this and next eventful thing was seeing euan and Sam (3+6mins respectively) coming out of #6 which was a nice mental boost. Caught them by #7 and then me and Sam proceeded to drop euan on the next long leg. After a brief sighting of matt we ploughed on to catch fin and Ollie before heading back across the road.
Still felt strong and the pace was high. Nice to have someone running behind me at the same pace. No problems through the final controls and even managed to burn off Sam a little before the finish.
Great to take the win - a testament much more to fitness than navigational ability on a day like today. Felt strong running throughout which is nice to see. I would also like to publicly state; Sam Griffin, you owe me an Easter egg.

Morning run from the accommodation around the trails of la breña. Clear sun, crisp views across the sea to the Atlas Mountains, lovely trails, beautiful forest. Pretty much the pinnacle of easy running. Made me want to stay in Spain!

Vintage hillside old town stuff. Set off strong and was picking good routes whilst always managing to stay in contact. Tried to get past Aapo at the end with an alternative routechoice but ended up in a dead heat. Pleased with that. And I beat Tove’s time from when she did it ha ha ha ha ha.

Barbate sprint.
Started off with some slightly questionable, knee-jerk routechoices but always executed well and stayed in contact. 5sec mistake to #4 but powered through to spec all good.
Then did a rubbish routechoice before binning a huge amount of time at #12 when the map was completely wrong in one place. Just could not work out what was going on and took so long to figure out what was happening. By this point I was caught which was annoying.
Made it home okay but so frustrating as I was really going for it and there’s not much you can do when the map is just wrong. Ah well. Strangely enough, didn’t manage to beat Tove this time.

WD along the beachfront. Big cold Wednesday night in Stoke vibes.
Thus concludes a short but very sweet kalevan camp. Fantastic areas and brilliant training - what more could you want?!

Group run up to the top of san bartolome (442m) from the beach. Gentle pace through some lush woods and the view from the top was nice. Saw some very large birds with pretty massive wingspans but my ornithology is admittedly ropey so I couldn’t identify them.

Downhill middle course back to the cars. A small miss on a slope at about halfway before errors started creeping in towards the end which was a little annoying. Veg mapping was a bit questionable though. Overall a decent effort and a great, tricky course.

Mass start forked nightO
Dreamy first section where I ended up behind and then even sneaking ahead of Kirmula which was highly amusing.
Was leading a second pack as we headed on a longer leg but forfeited the lead through being a little hesitant. Ended up with Lauri and Aapo and had to correct when we drifted slightly. Came in front and slightly banana’d the control but was all safe after that to the finish.
Brilliant fun and pleased with some competent nav in and amongst lots of different gaffles.

Downhill ints. 560m sandy ascent with 125m vertical gain was a little sickening but at least it made the reps even more fun. Navving extremely well for the most part with some good compass. Made a bit of a hash at one point in the last rep but no harm done.

NightO ints
Hands down the most fun session I’ve ever done. Big group (10+) out and the area was awesome.
Was slightly taken aback by the sheer wheels being unleashed by some from the off but I was planning on going hard so this was welcome. Plan was just to always stick with people first and foremost.
Had my glory moment on the second rep when I spiked my gaffle and then ended up briefly in the lead. Almost urinated in excitement. Managed to come in second on the third rep as well which was partly spent trying to cling on to Lauri for dear life.
Straight up missed one of my controls on the last rep but you gotta do what you gotta do #hatethegame.
Overall, 10/10 fun session, awesome stuff.

First session of the Kalevan camp in Barbate
Long course on the massive forest next to our accommodation. Set off with two other lads and struggled to get used to 1:15 on 2.5m contours. Lovely forest though - similar to Moray in certain places maybe.
Made a pretty big path parallel at #5 which was a tad embarrassing. Then we had a monstrous long leg. Did okay till just near the end when I messed up the contours.
Headed back from this point to make the session a mere 12k. Mediocre stuff but first session of the camp in a new country in terms of orienteering so no worries at all.

Mass start gaffled night-O on contours/greens map
Chill start where everyone couldn’t find #1 cos of dodgy reflectors. Somehow and rather terrifyingly found myself in the lead on the way to #4 but I nailed it which was highly satisfying.
Then spent properly ages trying to find #6 which was proving rather impossible. Decided therefore to just follow the lads who came through me and thus got on the route to next few - excellent plan. Even came through and led at some points which was nice. Cut off a loop to head home but didn’t find either of the last two, instead opting to just flail around in hideous vegetation. Ah well - good sesh, enjoyed.
