Massive PB!
Was really looking forward to this as there was a big, stacked start list and lots of guys similar to me. Didn't have to specific aims coming in but was hoping to go sub 15:30. Track was windy but wasn't too worried as I was planning on sitting behind people for the most part.
Just before, Jeremy said he was gonna pace 74 sec 400s (15:25) and I thought that sounded good and the maths was easy so decided to punt for that. Set off from the gun and was instantly between 2 packs after honestly 80m. Classic. At this point I had the choice of either dropping back into the second pack or just soldiering on. Went through 400 in just over 73 with some metres gap over the pack so decided from then on really that this was destined to be a solo effort.
For the next two k they got closer to the point where I was pretty much pacing the pacer and we were hanging right where I wanted. Never got more than about 1-2 secs behind the 37sec 200s I was counting and felt comfy. Then pretty much the footsteps just faded away and I decided to try and get a few secs on the target time. Pushed on and started to gain a few secs which gave me a big mental boost - this was useful as the gurn was defo starting at this point.
Don't have split times so I can't say exactly but I'm pretty sure 4k would have been around 12:16 or somewhere like that. At this point I knew I could hold on so just dug deep and stuck it out for the last few laps. Finished and was just so gassed! Brilliant to get that post race buzz and I really feel like I couldn't have given any more. Massively appreciated the support from the sides as well :)
So overall, bit of a solo effort but delighted with the time and excited for the future. Gonna take the rest of this week easy with reduced mileage and will then start the pre-selection race block. Onwards!
