Note
(sick)

Finally some progress. All headaches/shivering/hot and cold swings have gone. yay. Still have a blocked nose though and although coughing is improving I'm still producing some outstanding coughs. Not sure when I'll first run but hopefully soon

Eek. Not got any better unfortunately since last update. Coughing is bad if not worse and I’m struggling to sleep. Sinuses still blocked and now have a temperature. Back to the GP tomorrow. In the meantime we just do maths revision and go for walks to get some fresh air cos if I spend a whole day inside I go slightly insane

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Went to the GP today - enflamed chest, nose and throat with potential bronchitis so was given two different antibiotics - great. Am changing my phys testing slot so will focus on recovery, stretching, core and revision in the meantime. Coughing continues and nose is worse than before.

ANYWAY

Since there is no chance I will be running tomorrow it is time for the end of the year round up that no one asked for, needed or wanted, but everyone got anyway.

Yearly mileage: 2622.46km
Of which,
Orienteering: 506.64km
Running: 2115.82km

Did some research and this is the equivalent of running from the UK to Turkey across Europe which is fun I guess.

(Last year was 2037.02km)

So the 2019 aim was originally 2600km but at the start of June I was on for 3000km. However this year has been in different phases.

Jan - Mid June: Pretty much all good, pretty much injury free apart from a small ankle issue.
Mid June - Developed a problem with the shin, still not really sure how this came about but was rather close to JWOC so transferred straight to the road bike with a very small amount of running before Denmark.
JWOC was good then SSD Day 2 the ankle went big style so we were out for the rest of the month.
Had pretty much a full month of training before JEC then used October as a rest month.
November was a great month of really consistent and injury free training, as was December until the 23rd when the illness came. Although in retrospect this was probably too much mileage given how busy December was school and social wise.

So despite these injuries it has been an awesome year. Never in a million years did I expect to get selected for this year's JWOC. And if you don't believe me or thought that I was quietly confident, I booked return flights for a holiday in Paris that clashed directly with the JWOC dates 3 days before the JK! However the selection races were solid and this was what was needed to get across the line. Was so exciting to get picked and I was really looking forward to it.

The competition itself was the definite year and career highlight, a fantastic opportunity to mix with the very best in the world. Sprint was solid, Long was great, Middle qual was scrappy and Relay was solid. I felt zero pressure for any of the races and just kept reminding myself to savour the experience and give it everything, not worrying about results.
Absolute highlight was hands down the girls and boys (which everyone always forgets) relay results. My nerves were unreal but seeing the girls win the gold was just amazing. Although my relay personal performance was nothing special I did then spend the afternoon absolutely tearing apart the Norwegian team football team's defence (including nutmegging their coach to score) in a glorious 4-2 victory. Afterparty was naughty as well.

After JWOC was the ankle tear at Six Days. Was highly annoying but at least it was after the worlds and at least I was staying with two doctors and a physio. Despite still being injured, Turkey was fun and useful and after this I managed to string together a good month of training to put together a decent JEC. Relay was on course to be one of my cleanest runs ever before a silly mistake on an easy control - oh well - all good experience.

After a rest, November and December were great - until now lol.

So there we have it. A fantastic year of orienteering with some great people and amazing places visited. Looking forward to continuing the focussed training and positive outlook in 2020 to make sure I'm in the best position I can be.
