Day #6 at Armadale castle on Skye
Some gorgeous runnable forest at the start however I somehow decided to deploy headless chicken mode and just forget to use my compass - well done me.
Absolutely shipping time in the first 11 controls through my own idiocy but got the head screwed on the right way after that, caught the girls and started to get into gear. Caught finlay and we munched the last very techy slope section with only one real faff.
Overall, a pretty solid set of performances on some brilliant areas. Had an absolutely great week - well done Chris!

Day #5 at Plock of kyle
Was grateful for the late start on this one as it meant things were a bit more runnable in the forest - had great fun just pinging about for the first 20 controls even if I messed up the long leg into the urban after. Plain sailing after that and nice to get the win again

Race 3 at Inverewe
Tiny bit of faffage in the forest but got a shift on in the open. Made 2 annoying mistakes and got caught by finlay just before some great technical forest to finish. In classic pete molloy fashion we messed up the route to the finish - lovely stuff.
Another fun race

Day 2 - Culag woods Lochinver
Carnage. Some of the worst grot I’ve ever seen in the first bit which was a good laugh. Caught Grace at #4 having commando crawled into the control before catching Tom and finlay at #5 to get the train in motion.
Survived the rough stuff and got into faster forest for pinging around which was great fun - kept the flow well. Enjoyed the rogue beach section on the rocks before back into the forest - dropped the rest before pushing on to the finish. So apart from a few scraps it was pretty clean so happy days all round

Bla Bheinn
Wild camped the other side of the bay the night before so nipped round to do this before leaving Skye. Very short sharp munro with a gentler approach for the first couple of k. Bit of route march up through scree and rocks to the summit but was good to get a bit more scrambling practice.
View from the top was hands down the best view I've ever had from a munro - amazing vista of the Cuillin and so much more. Jittery then quick descent back to the car to head to a nearby burger van - heavenly

Geal Charn
Headed over to Laggan to bag this isolated one - had been chosen due to gentle gradient and lower climb. That being said, it may have been a step too far lol.
Was feeling pretty goosed on the climb and I don't think I contributed a single bit of chat all the way up - just got the head down and ground it out.
Was particularly gutted by the false summit at the start of the plateau and conveyed as much through use of expletives. Grace then reminded me that of course it wasn't the top cos we hadn't gone far enough. Honestly, I would have happily called an airstrike on her at this point but through lack of means I decided to just carry on instead.
Was a really lovely descent with an easy gradient on a gorgeous evening but I was a bit whacked to fully appreciate it. Made it down in 40 minutes so good progress.
Brilliant few days of recceing/running with incredible weather to boot - what more could you want

Bruach na Frithe - northern cuillin
Few k of transport before a sharp climb up onto the spur to the summit. Got progressively rockier and steepier - the path actually went round the side on the scree but soon got up to the summit.
A very careful descent down through the scree which was punctuated by seeing two kids who must have been around 6 and 8 with their parents - felt well lame at this point.
Soon managed to open up into a run as we headed back down into the heat. Did about a k of terrain running to get across to the fairy pools to have a wee look. They are very pretty, but I'm just not sure they're that special compared to everything else on Skye. Still, was pleased with the third and final outing on the ridge - managed to get a very good idea of what's what before returning in September.

First cuillin outing - Sgurr na Banachdich
Set off from the campsite in the cloud and was expecting some serious mountain nav ahead. However heading up to a corrie at around 450m we could see light through the fog and sure enough from about 500m up we were treated to a glorious inversion which was a real treat.
Pretty easy march to the summit with this newfound visibility and was a great first look at the ridge itself. Actually went along the ridge for a bit from the summit, practicing a bit of scrambling.
Descent all fine, but was regretting the lack of suncream

ahr:129 max:173 shoes: VJ Irock 3

Sgurr nan Eag
Rested and refueled before heading out again for the southernmost munro on the ridge. Easy first 3.5k then a big push up to the corrie at 700m. This was alright but as was the case in the morning it was pretty hot and this made it thirsty work.
From the corrie it was a very steep scramble up to the ridge. Did feel slightly mugged off when we encountered a family with two boys who must have been about 8 and 10 coming down - impressive stuff.
We were rewarded however as the ridge itself was a fun scramble and the views from the top were utterly spectacular. Back at the corrie we stopped for a swim in the lochan - not often you can do this kinda thing in Scotland so that is something I will savour for a while!
By this time I was pretty sunburnt in certain places so the return was a bit itchy, but at least the views managed to distract me a bit.
So, a big first day and I believe my first ever 5000+ calorie day - huge numbers

Dollar Hill Race - not sure about position but I think it was top 10

Was really looking forward to this as my first hill race - obviously didn't have fresh legs but was still ready to give a good effort. It was really hot but there was a solid wind to cool things down.
Set off in the fast wave and got myself latched onto the back of the front pack for the first k in the town and park. Turned into a bit of a queue through the woods and I managed to tuck in behind sasha and ali. Crazy bit of bracken bashing which felt like a bit of a jungle then it was out onto the hill up the saddle.
Still sat behind sasha but it was quite hard work passing all the people from the previous waves as it meant scrabbling through the rough stuff. Pushed on at the top of the saddle and took over leading us two up to whitewisp. Was very much working hard at this point so popped a gel. Sasha pushed on though which was good as it gave a lead to hang on to and I would have defo been slower otherwise.
Fired along the ridge - was slow with the headwind but it did cool me down. Nipped over tarmangie and pinged down the first proper descent after. We were still together and managed to keep the pace great through the undulating session before I led up andrew gannell, taking a second gel here.
The descent was a bit dodgy at one point and was already feeling it in my legs a wee bit. Really pushed on for the final climb. However, for the cycling fans amongst you, what happened next was very similar to when chris froome attacked over the peyresourde, except it just happened a bit more slowly but either way, I was very much dropped by the summit.
The descent was brutal. My quads were hurting and I was concentrating very hard. First time I've really gunned a descent in a race and it was honestly brutal. Kept the pace up just about but did get overtaken a couple of times - nearly stacked it once but managed to get to the woods in one piece. From then on it was alright, the steep bit was nothing special and I managed to push on along the road to the finish.
But wow that was a brutal experience, probs my toughest race physically. The route combined with the heat was a potent combo. Definitely the first time I've had jelly legs after the race so needed a good lie-down to stop the tingles.
Still, this was a great fun race and I was very pleased with my performance. Even if the downhill tekkers are lacking compared to the more experienced hillrunners the fitness is clearly there which is promising.

The 3 Beinn a Ghlo munros. Very direct ascent on a great path up to the first one before a lovely ridge run and steady climb to the second. Bit rockier on the third and the descent off it was very rocky to start and then although there was a path it was still very steep. No worries cos I was in no rush though - bit of a slog back on the track but just took it really chill.

Am running the dollar hill race tomorrow so took this noticeably easier than I normally do which felt very nice. Looking forward to a bit faster hill action!

Running race 1:10 [4] 0.4 km (2:55 / km)

Varsity 400 hurdles. Unfortunately because oxf*rd had so many people isolating or simply too scared to show up they made it that only the winner of the seconds race counted for the scoring. So this was effectively pointless but hey ho.
The oxf*rd lad who won took SO long to get ready for the race and I was just standing there like come on you’re gonna win just get over yourself and get in the sodding blocks.
Once I’d established he would win comfortably (which took about 4.3 seconds) I just took it at a tempo pace and treated the barriers like steeple. So the time isn’t too bad all things considered

WU #2 with the steeplers

Running race 9:38 [5] 3.0 km (3:13 / km)

Varsity steeple - 9:38.80
Oxf*rd only mustered one guy who’d never done a steeple before to race us 4 which was pretty pathetic to be honest. Either way, we were keen for times and didn’t really care.
Water jump was on the outside so laps were longer - I was aiming for 80 secs per lap.
Let Jamie go and then found the pace with Rian tucked in behind. Unfortunately I messed up the mental maths for the pacing which I slacked too much in the middle of the race. In the grand scheme of things I don’t think this made a massive difference but we defo lost a few seconds.
Rian took the lead but was just slowing us down so I reclaimed it and actually started to pull away. Was feeling pretty spent in the last lap so Rian overtook me at the exact same place he did in our last race - 80m from the finish line.
Still, a 7 second PB which was pretty much a TT. Nailed all the water jumps and the barriers were mostly good. We’ll take that.

WD with James. Nice for Cambridge to take the overall W but felt a bit hollow considering half of the oxf*rd team weren’t there and their uni and even some of their own athletes had done their very best to stop the match happening. Hehe

Sweaty easy before tea run with a yorkshire pudding at the end - oh yes.
Bizarre 24 hours during which varsity athletics was cancelled, then rescheduled, then moved to a neutral venue, then confirmed as back on. Anyway, roll on Sunday and a glorious day of WOC spectating tomorrow
