Pretty phat sesh set by Phil for the weekend before varsity. Was great to work in a such a cohesive group. Eased into the sesh with 3:20s and then worked our way down to 3:10s for most of the second set.
Some of the creamiest grass I've ever run on, was absolutely lovely. Kept pushing on and averaged 3:05s on the last rep - good stuff

Trinity Great Court run - 1st
If you've watched chariots of fire then this is the race they do round the courtyard in cambridge (but they filmed it at eton :(...)
Pretty much you have to run a lap of our main court in the time it takes for the clock to strike 12 - obviously it's a mass start
In what can surely be described as a first, the race was started by the archbishop of canterbury cos welcome to cambridge lol. Set off on the bell and knew that I had to take the lead before the first of 4 90 degree turns. Duly did this and just grinded through the sprint.
Finished in first, swiftly chased by Isaac, in 46.8secs, and more importantly managed to do it before the clock had finished chiming - yay! So a highly memorable win to savour. Not saying anything but Seb Coe and Steve Cram ran it in '88 and they didn't make it...!

(the clock takes less time to chime depending on the weather!)

This was a really fun sesh. Working with Rian the whole time and was practicing not only my own hurdling technique but also how to jump when I was running right behind him, which is much trickier because of sighting. Started off a tad slow but got into it and we were knocking out low 2:20s by the end - happy days

Oh yes. Was a bit wary of doing this having just been vaccinated but I am a sucker for fun and refuse to be labelled as a wetty, so participation was the only option really.
As a teetotaller I went for 0% beers, which are quite possibly the most disgusting thing known to man. Chopped my first one well and flew round the first 400, then struggled with the second chop but still felt fine on my second run. From here is where the struggle really started and I was reduced to a shuffle by the final 400.
A true chunder mile purist would have pushed on hard, vommed, and carried on, but I couldn't bring myself to do that so shuffling it was. Finished in 8:42 and spent the next 10 mins trying and failing to be sick.
Still, was a good laugh and honestly didn't feel that bad at all after an initial rough period.

SLR round Girton. Solid group out for this one. Pace was pretty similar to what was specified for the first 10 and then we upped it having gone through Girton. Got horrendously lost in this bit during michaelmas so was good to come back in a group. Pace was ramped up once we hit the busway at 14k and stayed at around 4s for the rest of the way. I fully blame Aidan. Not complaining though, I was secretly hoping for some faster action today!

Steeple race at Cambridge Track - 9:54 on the watch
Just Rian and myself running today in pretty foul conditions (wind, rain), so was just looking to run a sensible race, focussing on nailing the jumping technique - particularly on the water jump.
I led out and we ran a pretty stately pace for the first few laps - just wanted to get a feel for it. Nailed the first, and indeed all the following, water jumps which was a good confidence boost.
Decided that I was keen to get things going so ramped the pace up from 1k onwards. Jumps carried on well, had a few stutters but nearly all of them were satisfactory. Carried on leading and pushed the pace a wee bit more - reckon we were running around 3-3:05s towards the end.
Rian came past with 80 to go which was highly predictable. Honestly I didn't mind though - I'd much rather front run a steeple so I can properly sight the barriers.
So overall, pleased with this. Felt much more controlled in terms of both pacing and jumping and looking forward to ironing out stuff in training before varsity :)

This was a fun sesh. We were given different things to do on each reps in terms of surging or steady which made it interesting. Good group out, even if it's always a bit annoying that the session for 20 people seems to be dictated by the needs of 3 people...
Got a corking spike to the shin on one rep when I went too close round a corner, so I now look like I've been attacked by a lion or something with 3 lovely lines

Southern Champs 3000 Steeplechase - 9:45.5
Well then. That was terrifying. Was coming into this race with only one training session ever and no water jump experience so the feelings of trepidation were real. Was scorching and bedford is a very exposed track wind-wise, yay.
Set off and gave myself some space and a clear line of sight to jump the first two barriers which was okay. Then it was the water jump. Yep.
Just running towards it thinking 'I have got literally no idea what I'm doing'. Jumped it, pushed off not nearly far enough and landed both feet in the water lol. Lesson learnt for the next times.
Race went on and honestly it was brute. It's 35 jumps in total and you just do feel horrible. Didn't really know how hard to try as well cos obviously you have to be leaving a decent amount of energy for the jumps. But for the most part the jumps were fine. Only one of them was really terrible and the ensuing water jumps were decent.
Finished feeling very relieved. Was an extremely mentally stressful race - with a jump every ~16 secs you just cannot switch off so I felt done by the end. Overall, really glad I did it though and looking forward to honing the discipline. Should have secured the 2nd team spot for varsity so roll on that

Ran to the track for the start of my budding steeplechase career. Spent an hour getting shouted at by an old man called Bob who called me decrepit amongst other things. But to be fair, he was nice and gave me some highly useful tips before my first race on sat. Then did some practice laps just following Jamie which was highly useful.
Then headed back to trin for a run with Isaac down to Grantchester. Was 27 degrees by this point - stonking weather. Then we decided to stop off for a swim in the cam which was great fun. Highly refreshing stuff, love some swimming. Ran back taps aff and saw a moderately famous youtuber on king's parade - excellent evening!

Very mixed feelings about this one to be honest. Obviously wanted a better performance than yesterday and was very much having the mantra of if you’re at all unsure then just stop.
After a tiny miss at #1 I lost some time at #2 cos I didn’t have a clear plan for the circle. Faffed at #3 before screwing the tapes which I never found - really thriving at this point yes lad.
Then I lost a solid 2 mins on #5 - must have been so close to it and was convinced I was right - dropped low to relocate and then found it just as sunley arrived.
We split on #7 and I spiked it from high so got a wee gap. Pushed on before a quick faff on #10. Then I made a proper moron mistake to #11 - just ran to the fence with zero compass, then proceeded to cross said fence (even though the control should’ve been on the fence) before realising what I’d done. Went straight back the way I’d came like a good boy. Then just completely cocked #12 - no plan, no detail, no hope.
Was caught by joe here. Next few controls were all good apart from a miss at #16. I was leading from #17 and absolute highlight of the course was spiking #21 - was a super tricky control and I honestly could’ve cried with happiness. Joe saved me on #22 then I got a gap to the finish, featuring the most horrible run in of all time.

So yep. 2 sizeable mistakes and a very scrappy start before getting it together. Ultimately though, a lot of people really struggled today so although I was very surprised initially by the result it does kinda make sense.
I’m thinking I may have overestimated my nav capabilities (even when I was actively being careful), which are just not there for the forest atm, but there is literally nothing I can do about that. In fact, my stamina felt excellent which is great to see. I feel like I honestly did the best I could in terms of prep for these really techy selections so I can’t be too hung up on mistakes like these, which get ironed out with time in the forest.
Have to say I’ve really really enjoyed this weekend - class areas and peng weather and was great to catch up with everyone. I’ll have a wee rest and then evaluate how the summer is gonna play out (I do have some ideas...)

Ah dear. Not a good day at the office today. Knew I was obviously lacking forest time of late, but still felt I could do a good job provided I was careful.
First two controls were absolutely fine, then binned 5 mins at 3. Wasn't quite sure what I was doing for the final approach and then just really struggled to relocate. Bailed to the bottom 3 times before eventually getting it. Pretty sure if I'd just followed gg I would have been fine but let's face it that's not the best tactic.
Then I messed up 4 as well - poor route, poor compass, poor relocation. From then I was fully aware the race was gone but still plowed on cos I'm not a wetty. Banana'd 5 before bumbling along the slope to 7 and faffing through 8 and 9.
From here on we were all good, lovely forest and was running well for the most part.
So yeah, a really disappointing and frustrating performance today. Felt like I could have done well and yet didn't so selections and all that aside that is a bit annoying. Still, there are worse things in the world and we do in fact roll on for tomorrow

That was a lot of fun. Solid course and excellent vibes. However, I managed to lose a pretty hefty chunk of time on the first and third legs - got the wrong routechoice for both of them and although I didn't really realise at the time I defo paid the price for it.
Was solid in the town and did my very best to get run over multiple times (as it should be). Took the hill route by accident to #9 but don't think that was too much of a disaster. Biggest mistake was #11 where I couldn't read the detail so ended up taking a faffy route. Could've made big gains by going round. All good to the finish, got a nice run of fastest splits.
So overall a competent performance that I'm defo pleased with. Made sure to get my head down (or up, to avoid the pedestrians) as much as possible and really push on whenever I could. Just a few tiny details to work on. Great to see the results being so close!

Started off next to Jesus for some narrow alleys practice - pleased with this, kept it together. Then did the downing site and finished near coe fen. Good wee training sesh and was pleased with what was happening.
