Orienteering race 36:19 [3] 2.45 mi (14:49 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

OUSA Nationals -- Relay @ Burton Creek with Kris & Gøril.

Although we had a solid team, we also had some very tough competition in the women's masters category (Peggy, Tori, Marie-Josée, Angelica, Svetlana, etc.).

So we were amazed on Tuesday morning when we saw that we had won! Totally unexpected.

Slow & careful to #1.

Drifted too far right on the way to #2, but recovered.

Very slow going on the way to #4 (long stretches of unmapped slash), but I was happy to find it easily at the end of this long leg.

I briefly took the wrong trail in between #4 and #5 -- compass bearing check saved me.

I didn't find the trail I wanted to take to #6, but I didn't spend any time looking for it -- it was easy to run through this part of the woods.

Easy controls for the rest of the course. Very fun!

Orienteering race 1:31:59 [3] 4.38 mi (21:00 / mi) +400ft 19:20 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

OUSA Nationals -- Long @ Sagehen.

I didn't dislike the map / course as much as some people seemed to -- but that's probably b/c I got REALLY lucky finding #2 after my first long leg. That one could have been disastrous.

From #1 to #2, after hitting the big clearing, I stayed very wide-right to use the trail and avoid the marsh. But the "trail" was barely distinguishable (overgrown and not easy to run on), and I realized later that the marsh was probably bone dry and would have been easy to cross with a more direct route.

Considering my angle of approach, it's a minor miracle that I found the ride that took me right into #2.

I used the tiny clearing & boulder as a waypoint on the way to #3.

To get to #4, I planned to cut through the rough open to get over to the road. But I drifted left and ran through the light green for way too long. Then I meandered and found two other rocky controls before finding MY control... It would have been much better to stay on the road longer & approach from just southeast of the control.

Huge error on the way to #5 -- drifted too far left (wrong green & rocky hilltop) and then wandered back and forth on the other side. I think I only found it b/c I saw Corinne leaving the area an angle that had to be towards #6 -- so I went to the area she was coming from.

It went OK after that, just some hesitation at the same control others complained about (#8, flag somewhat hidden below logs -- I saw the streamer first).

2nd behind Stephanie, ahead of Olga.

Orienteering race 39:55 [3] 2.3 mi (17:21 / mi) +275ft 15:36 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

OUSA Nationals -- Middle @ Little Truckee Summit.

There wasn't a lot of route choice on this course, so I mostly used Neal Barlow's "straight is great" approach.

Other than tripping, face-planting, and getting covered in soot towards the end, it was fun and I didn't have any big mistakes -- just some hesitating on the way to #7 & #9, and some rock confusion on the way to #11.

F50+ second overall again, behind Olga again.

Orienteering race 16:10 [3] 1.5 mi (10:47 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

OUSA Nationals -- Sprint @ Sierra College in Rocklin, CA.

No major errors, but some time losses that added up to a 17-second deficit behind the F50+ winner (Olga):

(a) it took me a while to find the start triangle on the map;

(b) I went up and down some stairs unnecessarily on the way to #5;

(c) I ran back and forth a short distance before I figured out #7; and

(d) at some point later in the course, I tripped and fell while running and scraped up my hand and knee.

I loved having parking, start & finish all within a 30-second walk of each other. And the course was fun.

Then we drove to Truckee, with the air getting more and more smoky...
