OUSA Nationals -- Long @ Sagehen.
I didn't dislike the map / course as much as some people seemed to -- but that's probably b/c I got REALLY lucky finding #2 after my first long leg. That one could have been disastrous.
From #1 to #2, after hitting the big clearing, I stayed very wide-right to use the trail and avoid the marsh. But the "trail" was barely distinguishable (overgrown and not easy to run on), and I realized later that the marsh was probably bone dry and would have been easy to cross with a more direct route.
Considering my angle of approach, it's a minor miracle that I found the ride that took me right into #2.
I used the tiny clearing & boulder as a waypoint on the way to #3.
To get to #4, I planned to cut through the rough open to get over to the road. But I drifted left and ran through the light green for way too long. Then I meandered and found two other rocky controls before finding MY control... It would have been much better to stay on the road longer & approach from just southeast of the control.
Huge error on the way to #5 -- drifted too far left (wrong green & rocky hilltop) and then wandered back and forth on the other side. I think I only found it b/c I saw Corinne leaving the area an angle that had to be towards #6 -- so I went to the area she was coming from.
It went OK after that, just some hesitation at the same control others complained about (#8, flag somewhat hidden below logs -- I saw the streamer first).
2nd behind Stephanie, ahead of Olga.
