Orienteering race (5.73km) 55:34 [4] *** 5.3 km (10:29 / km) +193m 8:52 / km
spiked:13/15c

Second day at Letchworth State Park, West side. Gorgeous views of canyon on my way to the event. Easier run today especially physically. 5.3km, actually ran 5.73km according to GPS, 193m vertical. Placed 3rd out of 10 in M50, 5th out of 46 in GreenX. Pleased with run, came in 4th out of 14 in M50, overall for the two days; and 7th out of 52 overall. Mats Sundbue beat me again today, he is a faster runner...

Only misses were 3, veered too far to the right; and 4th, ran 50m past the control (it was placed further below the crest of the slope than I expected). Maybe 1 minute in total. Also route choice to 9 is a question, would it have been better to avoid 10-15m of the steep climb up from 8 and instead veer to the right? Not sure.

Alexandra did great, came in first on Yellow beating all the boys :)

Orienteering race (ran 6.87 km per GPS) 1:22:34 [3] *** 6.0 km (13:46 / km) +354m 10:38 / km
spiked:12/14c

Two day classic race in Letchworth State Park, "the Grand Canyon of the East". Yes the terrain is punishing! Haven't been this tired since Billygoat, and maybe not even then. Waking up at 3:30am to drive up may have had something to do with it, but 354m climb (according to my GPS) and really tough terrain generally made for a slow race. All those gullies, I am tired of gullies! Fairly warm and humid. Felt sluggish from the outset and it didn't improve with time. Pulled left calf muscle somewhere in the middle of the race, a little worried about that for tomorrow.

Finished 4th in M50 (out of 13), and 9th out of 46th in GreenX. Came 1.5 minutes behind Mats Sundbue, my Swedish racing colleague from when we were about 13! My slow speed is purely a reflection of how (not) in shape I am, especially leg muscles.

Besides some very slow running, technically mostly pleased. Spiked all but about 2 controls. Only issues were slight route choice to #4 (should have gone more straight and not up on the hill, it looked clearer but I lost time); #5 (came a little too high up but quickly figured it out, 30s); #11 (route choice, should have come up to the path more quickly, 45s); and #13 (route choice, going straight or slightly to the right was much faster according to attackpoint, instead I went up to the road because I was soooo tired of gullies etc, 1.5 minutes).

Alexandra did OK, enjoyed the course. Got sick half way through, and walked the rest, dehydrated (it was warm and humid)? 90m climb on a yellow course!
