Orienteering race 1:06:01 [4] 5.9 km (11:11 / km) +166m 9:49 / km

Long distance at Foley Mountain, Westport, ON. Competed in M45, same course as M55, came 8th (out of 30) and would have been 2nd in M55; 9th on course out of 62.. 5.9km, GPS tells me I ran 6.79km with 166m climb.

Really fun course, and excellent map - northern part of yesterday's map. Terrain was easier to run in, at least until #10. Challenging navigation in part, required staying in close contact with map and compass. Had a good run, treaded cautiously and focused on not making mistakes. Spiked most controls, only significant wobble was #4 where I ended up on the clearing just S of the control and then searched further south, lost 2m. Looking at the splits it seems my route choice to #2 (straight rather than around the road) cost a minute, surprising as the forest was quick to run through. Also lost slightly on #10 (went around the hill as I was tired, which probably cost a bit), and #13, maybe 30-45s in total. So about 3.5 to 4m.

Long leg to #6 was great fun, as were the detailed navigation to 7, 8, and 11. Compliments to the course setter!.

Orienteering race (COC Middle Distance) 39:41 [4] 3.0 km (13:14 / km) +115m 11:06 / km

Canadian Championships middle distance, Foley Mountain some 20km SW of Perth, ON. I ran M45 instead of M55, but we actually shared the same course. 3.58km per GPS, 115m climb. Came 8th out of 32 in M45, would have placed 4th in M55 out of 34. 11th of 66 on the course.

Map was outstanding, very detailed and accurate. Thank you!

Didn't think I had a very good run. Lost about 5 minutes. Ground was very rocky and I moved slowly. Didn't find a decent running speed until midway through the course. #1 was fine. As was #2...except I ran straight to #3, failing to see #2 on the map. Lost 2.5 minutes. Straight to #4, hesitated a little as control was well hidden in the depression. Slow running to #5 but no issues. Lost 30s on #6 as ended up too far S, by the swamp. Went past and to the W of #7, found and punched another control but luckily checked the number. Figured out where I was and went back up to #7, but lost 1.5m. Tricky terrain, many clearings, difficult to stay in contact with the map. Tried to use a cliff as attack point to #8, but veered slightly S and mistook another cliff, lost 30s. Ran slightly past #9 as well, 15s. Clean runs to 10 through to finish.
