That is now three consecutive orienteering meets that I have been unable to complete. Let's see how Sunday turns out.

It's difficult to tell if I actually fell off the southern portion of the map. Unable to find controls 6 (67) or 7 (70), I eventually encountered a single remnant of fence and began a NE safety bearing seeking hydro-electric corridor. When I finally reached corridor, I was more than 500m from control 10 (79). However, I did not know where I was on the corridor until I finally met a competitor standing still, seeking control 10 as I entered that area. Heading NE kept me or got me on the map. Following the published NW safety bearing would have taken me off map if I failed to recognize terrain I had already been on.

Note

Borutski travels toward Kinburn Side Road in rural west Ottawa while texting his brother, Art Borutski, who lives in the area.

2:30 p.m.: Ottawa police officers, with the help of an OPP helicopter, arrest Borutski in the woods at Becks Road and Kinburn Side Road “without incident.” Police were able to locate him by triangulating his cellphone signal.

orienteering race (South March Highlands) 2:45:32 [3] *** 7.3 km (22:41 / km) +35m 22:09 / km

I learned a great deal from this fail today.

Tearing my knee twice on the stairs at home in the early morning before the event did not effect my orienteering. I also hiked a couple of kilometres after the race.

This is likely my last attempt at a long advanced course. Despite not finding control 6 (56), I still took about the same amount of time I would have on this very familiar terrain at this distance. I was too close to three hours.

On the second leg, I learned that I can still run too far in a leg though I did catch myself within a 100m detour.

For the first time I carried calories and camelbak on course. I still screwed up, unable to blame hydration or brain sugar while racing. I failed to find control when confused by mountain bike course not on map. I have been confused in this very same sector. My MP took place two controls before the water station.

I met Richard late in course. He saved my leg but I fear that I messed up his.
