originally signed up to run meet the minotaur skyrace on e's birthday in 2020 - it was going to be a big year with WRC happening in california later that summer, so i thought signing up for the skyrace would motivate me to train and be better prepped for a "home country" WRC. but then the pandemic happened, i got laid off, then took my first "real full-time job" and had difficulty figuring out how to fit everything in life-wise.

so the race happened two years later than planned and my training leading up to it wasn't what i had originally envisioned. i did pretty well through this past winter, but life and gloomy april weather and a troublesome knee got in the way of getting out and doing a bunch of hiking. walking the teanaway long and most of PNWOF, then wearing exclusively flip flops the last two weeks because of super-blistered heels was the extent of my prep the last two months.

i decided to do my best and view the event as an opportunity to do a cool and challenging run/hike. i managed to make the cutoff at aid station 1 with 5 mins to spare and set out on a grueling loop to aid station 2. because of recent weather conditions, they pushed the race start back by 2 hours and shortened the cutoff for arrival at aid station 2 by an hour. by the time i reached a false summit leading up to the high point of the leg, it was obvious i wasn't going to make the second cutoff. the course sweeper asked if i wanted to continue or turn around there - i opted to continue and got to the high point, traversed a ridge and then got to descend down what the race directors had dubbed "shoe shredder." back at aid station 2, emptied all the rocks out of my shoes, then took the minotaur escape route to aid station 3, then got to cross the finish line despite not officially doing the whole course.

all in all, i had an amazing day out in the mountains! i'm super glad and proud that i made the first cutoff and got to do the loop between aid stations 1 and 2. the views in the mountains and of other mountains and the prairie beyond were stunning! and the terrain was what i had imagined getting to do as part of the race. a little bummed i didn't get to do the epic second half of the course, but i did do 2/3 of the elevation and 1/2 of the distance of the official course. and with the bailout route, my ending mileage was only a few miles shorter than the official route (though obviously, much less elevation).
