was tempted to walk the relay but figured it would be too hard with teammates to not want to run. in the interest of preserving longevity in my active life decided to sit it out. but! got to stay involved and participate by volunteering instead. it was super fun helping out at the map exchange and nice to be helpful! :)

winter o' championships at lincoln tree farm - signed up as first shift volunteer at public start line. the whole event started late due to controls not being out yet, so i told my relief volunteer to not worry about getting back in time to take over since i was planning to just walk as much of the short advanced course as i could with my bum ankle.

started after noon and called it quits after 8 controls because i wanted to make it back before course closure. felt pretty good about my navigation until trying to find 9 (which i never did). ankle in brace felt fine even over uneven terrain.

feeling a bit bummed about my ankle. the night after the race i had to work, wrapped it with an ace bandage, asked to not be upstairs and stayed real mindful about not rushing around as much as i normally do. it felt pretty good that night, but i woke up and it was super stiff and swollen and hurt to put weight on. happily was able to get that night off work and did ice baths, elevation, compression, all the good stuff.

been trying to be good about maintaining a care regimen and today it's feeling quite a bit less stiff but still very tender. e got me a sexy ankle brace that i will debut at work tonight - will see how that goes before figuring out what to do for the rest of the week. bleh.

super wet day!

started out pretty well - didn't get too confused at the start like i often do and felt pretty good getting the first 2 controls. then headed for 3 - running along the bluff felt really exposed! saw the control down a hill and ran for it, tripped on my left side, hit the ground and rolled over my right ankle. :(

took a moment to test it out - it didn't feel right and after brief contemplation, decided to end my race there. was able to walk on it pretty okay but didn't want to risk running on it and causing further damage. thanks to kate for stopping and making sure i was okay. :)

looking at the map and checking my watch, i decided to do a mini-course and hit 4-5-14 on my way back to the finish. e was volunteering and i had time to kill anyway. at what felt like hobble pace, i was able to really focus on navigation (not that the controls were that hard to find) so that was cool. also got to enjoy the walk in the rain under trees and admire the mossy undergrowth more than i would have otherwise. took a more scenic route 4-5 to avoid staying on the road. peteris raced past me 14-F and shouted at me to run which i thought about for a split second but didn't.

and that was my race. boo.

tried to get out for this run before the rain started, but it started raining just as i stepped out the door. booooo!! felt pretty grumpy, but got going and saw my brother-in-law running the opposite direction on the bike path and that bolstered my mood a bit. we had a much more successful in-passing high-five than the last time we tried it.

rain wasn't soooo bad but my left shoe did get pretty filled with water by the end and i was happy to get in and warm up.
