Meikle tap with kirsty and luke. Run up walk down. After seeing everyone’s snowy adventures recently i just really wanted to get up a hill! Lovely sunny day and nothing was icy after a few milder days. Knee was the usual achy-ness (1-2) at the beginning and took till just before the power lines to ease, around 5 mins? Then no pain at all for the rest of the climb or even in the descent, which is what i was worried about. Legs felt great despite some quite sore s&c doms, really pleased with how strong they felt despite the obvious lack of any sort of hill running recently, easily managed to run the whole way (slowly). Legs good but lungs not, felt i couldn’t get a whole breath in and the cold air was making my throat hurt. A very gentle walk down.

L knee the sorest it’s been for a while, just didn’t get better throughout the run. Had been achy all day before but usually a run makes things better. Trying to think of factors that would of caused the pain, best guess is the terrain-shoe combo - tussocky icy old golf course in hoka road shoes so my knee was probably wobbling all over the place. But think even if i’d stayed on dirt tracks it would of been achy today, just of those days maybe.

Note

Spent the day faffing with boards just for luke’s brand new bindings not to work with his board, will have to wait a few more days till we can both get out and he can show off. Found a random field in strathdon this evening with perfect snow for some snowboarding (and sledging), the new glen shee? Gates were open so could join a few fields together. Tough work hiking up and down but worth it :)

Running 20:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

20 min rehab run at glen tanar - past the church, fairy loch then through the wee short cut to come back along the tanar and then up the hill from the car park to the road split. Keeping a more tempo pace, legs there but lungs not! Fun day - walk and sledge up baudy meg, followed by this run then more sledging and snowboarding at luke’s in the evening till dark!

rehab run. Sticking at 20 minutes for a wee while. Introducing some rolling hills. My knee feels comfy on hills, more than on flats, but not so great on downhills unless its a very gentle gradient that I can lean forward on. Steep descents irritate it a lot, found this also when out walking (scolty, morven etc) as there's a lot of downwards force and weight on a single leg. Think this is a good route across the road as its steeper climbs and then a long gradual descent. Knee a bit achy at start, 1-1.5, but felt good once warmed up after 5 mins. Activation exercises before are helping

Plan was to go out to lumphanan and over the glen road to Tornaveen and back over the Learney but got to torphins but decided that anything other than the main roads would still be too icy, everything seems to be covered in this frozen snow. No real plan after this, got 100m up the shooting greens hill but that was too slippy. Aborted to a toms cairn, finzean and strachan loop, all roads were fine. On kirsts bike, so set up wasn't quite right and could feel some strain up the side on my left foot/ankle so didn't want to be out for too much longer as it was uncomfy, but lovely sunny conditions, no wind but baltic in the shade. Was easily holding 30 up most of the way, definitely feeling stronger on the bike. Knee fine.

Sunset snowy mtb at balmoral with luke - Up to alberts cairn, managed to cycle past the first cairn but had to push most of the way due to mud and ice. Turned up glen Gelder to see the most stunning fire red sunset over towards morrone, looked like someone had coloured in the sky with highlighters - best sunset i’ve ever seen? Up the glen and turned around the back of ripe hill. Just went out and back as daylight was quickly fading. Tracks were fully covered in snow but a landy had been up so made it really easy going and not icy at all - Bit confused with the new restrictions, is there a travel restriction for exercise? Or will this be the last adventure for a while?
