2023 NOL Middle Prologue
M21E
12th place

I enjoyed running in home terrain after previous physical NOL races in Tasmania and ACT.

Very happy with my result, and higher than I would have expected.
I find that I am able to keep my speed high on the first race of a weekend. It gets a bit harder to back up at Elite speed in the subsequent races.

I found myself catching a lot of both M20 and M21 competitors. At some stages there were almost 7 or 8 of us together.
That helped me find 7, which seemed to be too far to the left. I had no trouble as packs were exiting the control. I did lose a little on the next leg as I stopped too short due to the distance of the leg being longer than expected.

It was probably a little unfair to have so many people starting so close together. It helped me on this occasion, but I don't think it is really a level playing field.

2023 NOL Middle Chasing Start
M21E
13th place

Doyle started 5 seconds in front, Miller was 20 second behind and Preston about 45 seconds behind.

I kept Doyle and Miller in sight for the first 1.5 legs, but they were too quick. Preston caught me at 5. I led him through much of the technical section, but he pulled away up the hill to 12. I dug deep and stayed within 10 seconds of him till the end.

Good fun, but easy to navigate when there are several others going to the same controls. Results were determined by being in the right pack and having other runners to help.

Much of this NOL season was like this. Let's hope for more independent navigation next season.

Email from Warwick Davis to explain the mystery of control 11.

"To: Competitors on Courses 1, 2 and 3, MelBushO 30th April 2023

Some of you had difficulty finding control 133, #2 on Course 3, #3 on Course 3,
and #11 on Course 1.
The control flag was correctly placed by the course setter, but a ranger
relocated the control flag during the event. He was fearful for the safety of
competitors and didn't understand that moving the control simply led to the
competitors spending more time in the area that he deemed to be unsafe.
This is under review and discussion with Parks Vic management.

We are confident that entrants in the Hard courses will assess the terrain and
adjust their approach to remain within their own personal level of ability.

Competitors, who finished without finding the control, have had their result
adjusted. However there is nothing we can do to adjust for the time lost by
some of the competitors

I would like to thank everyone who has posted their route in Livelox. This
provides very useful feedback to the Course Setter. The actual route choices
made by competitors is always interesting and revealing.
