Bendigo Classic - 1996 Vic Champs re-run
17.1km course
I ran 104 minutes in 1996 as a 21 year old, so my aim was to beat that as a 39 year old.

I was successful, running 98 minutes.
This was really enjoyable to compare race 18 years apart. We should do more of these.
Can anyone nominate some other great races from the last 20 years that we should re-run?

I was very happy with my first lap, which was over 5 minutes faster. I pushed hard early on the tracks and kept my speed high.
I took a different route choice from 4 to 5 this time, going right. My split was about a minute faster this time.
The SI unit at #8 was not working, so I punched the map. This distracted me a little and I exited the control without a good plan, which resulted in extra distance. Apart from that, it was almost a perfect start on map 1 going through #15 in 59:59.

Lap 2 was not as smooth. Perhaps I was getting a little tired and didn't quite concentrate as well.
I hesitated at #16, having very little time to read this leg from the map exchange and drink station. I lost perhaps 15 seconds.
At #17, I ran directly to the correct cliff, but I didn't see the flag at the foot, so I ran on 20m and then correctly convinced myself that I was right. It was hidden in a little crevace in the rockface.
I lost 25s at #18 looking for the flag in the pit. I missed it by about 15m. I was unsure if it was on the hill side or at the bottom of the hill. It is always difficult to tell this when it is on the bottom contour line of the hill.
My biggest error was at #24. I left the track without a good plan except for knowing direction and the clearing as a catching feature. I just missed it by 20m to the right. I lost my direction in the light green broken ground as it was hard to run straight. When I saw the clearing I ran back and found it. 50s lost.
I finished well, holding off David Brownridge, who I caught at 19. He picked up the pace when I caught him and we pushed each other at the end of the long race.
