Orienteering warm up/down 18:00 [1] 3.0 km (6:00 / km)

Orienteering race 13:34 [5] *** 3.3 km (4:06 / km) +42m 3:52 / km

NOL #1, Sprint Distance
University of Ballarat
I felt that I got close to all of the optimal route choices, and I pushed hard all of the way. I did suffer a little on a couple of long climbs compared to the winners. This was probably the difference between 6th and a place.
The course was well set, but there were not too many difficult problems to solve, so I don't think there was much time lost by many people.

1 PM

Orienteering warm up/down 6:00 [1] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)

Orienteering race 32:18 [5] **** 6.05 km (5:21 / km) +92m 4:58 / km

NOL #2, Middle Distance
Surface Hill
A new map on a small area SW of Ballarat.
I started quite well, and had sight of Ben Rattray (2 mins) by the first dam wall crossing. I didn't catch him until 9 though.
My only mistake was at 10. I thought that the control was on a highpoint on top of a knoll, so I was looking for the biggest feature in the circle. In fact, it was a high point in a depression, so the control was actually quite low. I think I lost about 45 seconds here.
The rest was quite good, and I finished about 4 minutes down on the winner in 11th place.

Running 50:17 [2] 8.4 km (5:59 / km) +129m 5:34 / km

Easy stroll around the Tan.
Moomba is on, and the water skiers were in action. They get a huge amount of attention for a small sport. There are a few lessons to be learnt from water skiing.

Note

It seems that it is President's Presentation season again.
Last night I was asked to assist with next Tuesday's Western Series presentation, followed by next Wednesday's Schools Series presentation.
This follows Sunday's 2011 State Series awards.
I may need to get my hand ready for lots of shaking.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)

7 PM

Orienteering race 38:47 [5] * 9.27 km (4:11 / km) +109m 3:57 / km

Park & Street Orienteering
Cantebury Gardens
I wasn't quite on top of my game tonight. On several occasions I read the map only at a corner instead of prior to the corner which did not allow my usual nice flow. This was a concentration issue.
That said, I was satisfied with my route. 9.271 was just 50m longer than Ian Greenwoods and 20m longer than Blair. Given that several controls (such as 19) were not placed in the centre of the circle, you could say that all of these routes were equivalent.
My speed was ok, without being great. I did hold back a little with 3 important races this weekend.

Started easy 1:37, but most others were in the 1:34 or 1:33 range.

Running 1:05:06 [3] 12.81 km (5:05 / km) +65m 4:57 / km

Port Melbourne run to see the Queen Mary 2.
It's certainly an impressive ship - I counted 14 levels, possibly more. If you stood it on its end, it would be as high as the Eureka Tower.

There were thousands of people taking a look from the piers. D'Lish Fish was certainly doing well out of the tourist trade.

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:00 / km) +27m 5:37 / km

Running tempo 1:22:10 [4] 19.99 km (4:07 / km) +311m 3:49 / km

20km hilly circuit on Yarra Boulevard.
The second half was quite hard work, but it was a good work out. I was soaked by the end. Not from rain today, but from perspiration.

Cycling 30:00 [1] 6.5 km (13.0 kph) +1m

Riding home from the zoo, carrying Sophie in the back of Anne's bike. The boys rode the distance well, without any complaints. A big effort to allow their mum to stay at the shops a bit longer.

Catching Features 1:00:00 [0] ***

3 more competitions. I must be improving, as I finished each course, and I even made the top half of the field in one of them.
I'm starting to familiarise myself with the controls again.
