Castle Combe 10k - 1st - **course record**

This is basically all I’ve been thinking about the last couple of weeks. Very important race with regards to showing what I’m capable of to the US colleges. I knew I was in sub 30 shape but looking at the start list before the race, it looked like I’d have to run it solo, so confidence levels weren’t very high. Alright conditions but not ideal. 2 degrees and 10mph winds (wind chill of -2) made things a bit nippy but just gloved/thermal’d up and was Gucci. Just over 3 laps of a relatively flat race track So pretty ideal course. Filthy headwind for ~1km each lap. Started hard first couple of km averaging about 2:55/km. Settled in through 5km In 14:50 (past the marker). Felt pretty tired but in control at this point but still had 2kms left of headwind so wasn’t getting my hopes up. Through 7km on pace but going into the final lap it started to bite. Tried to relax through 8/9km so that I had something left into the final headwind km. Didn’t quite have the sub 30 today but a promising run nevertheless. 22 seconds faster than 2months ago in slower conditions and solo the whole way.

Was only when I crossed the line that I realised a guy was just behind me (I’d missed his name off the start list). He’d been around 10 seconds behind ever since the first km but had just kept the gap the same throughout the race. Maybe if we’d worked together something big could have happened, but hey, that’s hindsight for you.

Bought a ticket, didn’t quite pay off. “Sub-30”, am coming for ya next time!

Easy with 6x30'' hill strides in the middle. Looking like the race on Sunday is going to be a sub zero affair and due to new covid tiers loads of people have dropped out meaning the next fastest person in the race is a 33min guy. Nothing I can do about that though so just mentally prepping myself for a tough solo grind. Just grateful it hasn't been cancelled.

Lovely crisp frosty morning. Was able to go across the fields as mud had hardened over. Really splendid run overall and a good way to finish off a difficult year.

Managed to get through an entire calendar year without sustaining any proper injury’s. Feeling fitter and healthier than every. Excited to see what next year holds.

Hour along the canal. Very chilly morning but nice frost made it satisfying. Felt average.

2x8’[2’ float], 2x4’[1’ float]

Got a little carried away on this but felt controlled the whole way. Definitely bit more than threshold effort on the reps but kept the floats easier than last week. Nice to be tickling 10k pace on the 4s (both were mostly headwind aswell). Feeling good for this weekend although forecast looks very cold for the race. Can only play with what you’ve got though. Arms got very cold on this but otherwise felt decent.

*will chill these sessions once back up in Edinburgh with the boys, just struggling with self control when seshing solo.
