Sunday Oct 31, 2021 #

12 PM

Elliptical 1:15:00 [2]

Sunday grind pt. 1. 75mins on the elliptical. Fairly rough but got through with a bit of music and a bit of YouTube.
2 PM

Aquajogging 45:00 [2]

Sunday grind pt. 2. 45mins of aqua jogging. Had mike for 20mins. Motivation to get through this was generated by the idea that I don’t have to do another 2 hour day until next Sunday.

Saturday Oct 30, 2021 #

Note

Team overtraining confirmed. We didn’t even win conference yesterday which was a bit of an embarrassment. Boys just looked bonked, think need to make some fairly big changes for next year.
1 PM

Aquajogging 1:00:00 [2]

Easy hour in the pool. Had a nice group out which was a change, made it a lot easier. Maybe had one too many Hazy IPAs last night so was feeling marginally lacklustre.

Friday Oct 29, 2021 #

Note
(injured)

Hip/back Update: Absolutely no better, maybe even a bit worse over the last couple of days. Limping around so may be an idea to get some crutches as they were offered to me but initially I refused. Went for an x-ray today and will go for an MRI if nothing shows up. Got a horrible feeling about this one. Despite this, I'm still fairly upbeat, just treating the x-training like it's my profession (because it basically is), so it's better than sitting in an office all day. Most people are still in a less desirable situation than me so seems a bit ungrateful to get bogged down. Fairly confident I can hit 10-12hour weeks for the foreseeable future with that attitude.
6 AM

Aquajogging 1:00:00 [2]

AJ Session: 12x2’ (45”)

With Mike and Olivia. This was really grim but managed to get the HR up and around 180 for most reps which was really good.
7 AM

Elliptical 30:00 [2]

30’ elliptical post-AJ. Absolutely dead, still pre-brekkie.

Thursday Oct 28, 2021 #

11 AM

Elliptical 1:00:00 [2]

60' elliptical. Finally got some decent headphones which made this a lot more bearable.
12 PM

Aquajogging 30:00 [2]

30' aquajogging after elliptical. With Mike for a little bit. Another solid 90mins for the day.

Wednesday Oct 27, 2021 #

6 AM

Aquajogging 45:00 [2]

45’ aqua jog. Again just myself and the lifeguard, different bloke today though.
7 AM

Elliptical 45:00 [3]

Steady 45’ elliptical. After the aqua jog. Joined Drew for the last 20mins of his session and then did another 25 to round off 90mins for the day. Quite tired at the end. Team is starting to break. In the last 5 weeks had 5 guys get injured who would have probably made top 8 originally for conference. Maybe we mistimed the season a little bit.

6 AM

Aquajogging 1:07:06 [4]

AJ Session: 10’ (3’), 6x1:30’ (2’), 4x1’ (1’) +WU/WD

First session in the pool. So unimaginative that I just copied the session that the lads were doing on the track. Just myself and the lifeguard for the entire 70mins. I’m sure they loved watching the spectacle of me aqua jogging. Not a single word was exchanged. My calf cramped really badly on exiting the pool, terribly embarrassing.
8 AM

Elliptical 30:00 [2]

30’ eliptical post-AJ just to bin myself for the day.
3 PM

Gym 45:00 [0]

Solid one.

Monday Oct 25, 2021 #

Note

Confirmed. Definitely not running conference. Very sad. If I’m better by next week then regionals might be on the cards. Either way I’m going to hammer training (running of cross training) until the end of the season just so that I’m in sync with the other lads. Discovered last week that I find it really hard to motivate myself to do half hearted training. I can either go all in or do sweet fuck all.
11 AM

Aquajogging 1:00:00 [2]

60’ aqua jog. Second half with George which was good. Managed to get the heart rate to average 144 which was pretty decent. Think I’ll do the session in the pool tomorrow, quite like it.

Sunday Oct 24, 2021 #

1 PM

Elliptical 1:15:00 [2]

75' on the elliptical with Drew. Got a bit of a cold so had a headache for most of this. Meant I wasn't chatting much as was too spangled. Hip feeling marginally better today but still a way off running. By the sounds of things it looks like conference is unlikely. Just taking this day by day for now. Regionals is three weeks from now but a bit out of my hands.
2 PM

Aquajogging 45:00 [2]

45' aqua-jog!! 4 years ago I promised myself that I would never aqua-jog. Well, guess I'm a shitebag because I went back on that hoho. Had to wear a belt so I didn't drown but actually thought it was quite good. Fairly boring but chat with Drew did pick up. 2 hours x-training for the day, tough.

Saturday Oct 23, 2021 #

Note
(injured)

Doctor thinks it’s just aggravated SI joint causing me pain. If not better in a week will go MRI to rule out stress fracture.

If I can run by Tuesday then will still run conference Friday.

Friday Oct 22, 2021 #

Note
(injured)

Been chiropractor again today. Didn't seem to make any difference to my hip. Still limping around whilst walking so definitely can't run at this stage. They're getting the doctor in to have a proper look at me, I still think it may be tightness, but I am slightly worried about it being something more serious. Really terrible timing just before the two important races of the season. Is what it is and I'm still hopeful that I'll be able to run conference in a week.

Not cross training today just want to give the hip a complete rest. Will still go gym.
4 PM

Gym 45:00 [0]

Not overly productive as couldn't do half of the exercises due to the old hip.

Thursday Oct 21, 2021 #

6 AM

Underwater treadmill 1:00:00 [2]

Hour on the underwater treadmill. Not quite the alter-G but still a decent bit of kit. Fired the jets on to make things a bit tougher, hip felt alright, stabilised at a 2/10 after 10mins so decided to crack on and do an hour. Quite nice running barefoot underwater.

No idea on distance or pace so just going off what watch said. Probably a bit faster but who knows.

Hip is really taking its time to sort itself out. Just hoping will be better by next week so I can run in the lead up to conference.

Wednesday Oct 20, 2021 #

6 AM

Elliptical 1:30:00 [2]

90’ elliptical with Drew. Really appreciated the company as still haven’t got my hands on some headphones so no music. This was a dirty grind, already feeling the burn 20mins in. Absolute puddle of sweat by the the end. HR only 132 but still felt like a good grind on the legs. Hopefully I can run tomorrow but hit will need to improve a fair bit for that to happen. Seeing chiropractor today, hopefully they can work some magic.

6 AM

Running 10:33 [2] 2.14 km (4:56 / km) +3m 4:54 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Started the warm up but hip was too tight. Was limping the whole time. Made the sensible choice to abandon and hit up the XT.
7 AM

Elliptical 1:00:00 [4]
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

XT Session: 7x3:30’ (2:30’)

Grim. Hip still too tight to run on. Hopefully will be able to make Fridays session but just going to be sensible. Not much more fitness to be gained before the next races so more important to take care of this.

Didn’t get HR quite as high as I would have like but that’s to be expected as body not used to it so legs gave way before lungs. Still putting myself into the grave so all is good.
3 PM

Gym 45:00 [0]

Had to skip some of the jumpy shit.

Monday Oct 18, 2021 #

Note
(rest day)

Was going to run today but turns out my hip is absolutely spangaloided, could hardly get out of bed this morning. Think was compensating for the shin yesterday. Shin all good now though. Went to physio who battered me, feel better but still very tight so best to leave things a day.

Sunday Oct 17, 2021 #

8 AM

Running 1:33:00 [3] 24.15 km (3:51 / km) +86m 3:47 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

SLR out along the trail. Very chilly out, tights and gloves weather. Legs felt very clunky but aerobically felt decent so we got moving coming back. Shin has been bothering me a little bit ever since the race. Shitting it about the potential of a stressy but will just see what physio says tomorrow. Feel it more walking around then running so that’s probably a good sign.

Saturday Oct 16, 2021 #

9 AM

Running 1:01:39 [2] 13.51 km (4:34 / km) +101m 4:24 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

BIG day of travel yesterday, got back at midnight. Was going to go 10miles but decided to cut down to an hour as it’s going to be a low mileage week anyway. Temperature had dropped by about 15 degrees over the 3 days I’ve been away. Really enjoyed it though, nice and crisp.

Friday Oct 15, 2021 #

8 AM

Running 22:35 [2] 4.85 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Up. Did a half mile tempo which I think I’ll start to do more in future.

Running 24:55 [5] 8.0 km (3:07 / km) +60m 3:00 / km
shoes: Dragondos

Pre-nationals invitational - 196th

The most competitive NCAA race outside of nationals. Stuck to the plan, got out conservative, through the km in 2:53 (ish) and the mile in 4:41. Settled in until 4km then started making moves up the field alongside Chuck the whole way. Picking off about 40 spots in the second half. Legs felt really bad basically from the off but just gave it everything I had. Thought we were much further up the field but then at roughly 4mile I heard someone shout “you’re in 200th”. I honestly thought we were at least 80 places higher.

Crossed the line absolutely spangled in a very underwhelming time. Finished within 5 seconds of Chuck and Matt and 5 seconds ahead of Drew so just about where I expected to be within the Bradley boys just about half a minute slower than expected (all 3 of those boys ran 24:30ish at Missouri). Guess time is a bit irrelevant anyway as it’s cross. Think the hills on the course slowed us more than expected.

Think when you get out slow, you need to be moving up through people the whole race, not just the back half. It was very easy to just sit in with the slower pace and get complacent.

Happy with the effort I gave, not happy with the outcome. Still miles off where I know I can be. Was extremely humbling to finish in the bottom 1/3 of a race and not even have a terrible run. Feel like this is the first time that I’ve hurt properly in almost a year, if I can combine this mental attitude with a pair of legs that actually want to move then we should be in for a good one.

Should have stamped my ticket onto the conference team which is a relief, excited to go again in 2 weeks.

Running 36:27 [2] 8.15 km (4:28 / km) +60m 4:19 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Pre race just running the course. Pretty hot out but race is earlier so temperature shouldn’t be terrible. Really nice course, couple of little kickers but think it should be fast tomorrow. Felt alright, hoping legs decide to show up tomorrow.

Running 3:57 [5] 0.93 km (4:15 / km)
shoes: Dragondos

Strides. Legs not feeling great in the spikes tbh but will hopefully just be able to grind through the initial stages of ligma tomorrow.

Running 1:05:32 [2] 14.64 km (4:29 / km) +80m 4:21 / km

Shortened midweeker. Pre-flight down to Tallahassee (Florida). Felt alright, looking forward to Friday.

Running 41:03 [4] 8.44 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: Saucony Endorphin Pro 2

Track: Mile, 8x300m (1’), Mile, 4x300

4:53, 47s, 4:53, 46s

Oh dear, this is not what the doctor ordered. Felt bonked straight from the off. Definitely didn’t eat enough yesterday so that’s most likely the cause. Cut the last set of 300s short but was honestly flagging from the first mile. Probably could have murdered myself and finished the full thing but that would have been silly on race week. Other lads were cruising which made the bonk feel even worse. No stress, had a really good session just before Mizzou and ran really shit there so hopefully the opposite happens here.

Running 14:57 [2] 3.07 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Down.

Note
(rest day)

Decided I fancied a jog but then massive thunderstorm rolled in so cba with that. Would have only been a little shake out jog anyway so not worth getting struck by lightning.

8 AM

Running 1:33:59 [2] 22.55 km (4:10 / km) +90m 4:05 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Shorter and easier long run this week, just starting to ease things down before Friday. Still moving along decently. Smaller pack as it’s fall break so most people are away, but quite liked it tbh. Fairly big week considering rest day on Monday.

Saturday Oct 9, 2021 #

9 AM

Running 1:12:17 [2] 16.09 km (4:30 / km) +128m 4:19 / km

Slightly longer one today so can take some off long run tomorrow. Quite hot and didn’t feel great. Thought I was in for a bad one early doors but ligma stabilised. cba with strides though.

Up.

Running 43:10 [4] 11.51 km (3:45 / km) +25m 3:43 / km
shoes: Saucony Endorphin Pro 2

Split Tempo: 4mile (4’) 2mile (4’) 4x30” (1’)

4mile in 20:20 (3:10/km)
2mile in 9:35 (2:59/km)

Along the trail. Large amount of rain yesterday so sloppy underfoot. Surprisingly not too much moaning from the boys though. 4mile was meant to be easier tempo effort and then a bit more of a pick up on the 2mile. Executed pretty much perfectly. Probably underestimated how hard the prescribed pace for the 4mile (5:05/mile) would feel. Last mile definitely got a little bit grindy. This made me slightly worried for the 2 mile, but it actually went solid. Moved away with Danner George and Chuck. Got slightly dropped by Danner and George in the lasts 400m but pretty happy with the time considering it was still a relatively controlled effort. Got moving nicely on the 30s, good to spin the legs out. Just heard one of our best guys have got a stressy which is gutting because will definitely make getting to nationals harder. Still think we have the potential but will have to take a very good race from all our top boys.

Running 14:17 [2] 3.22 km (4:26 / km)

11 AM

Running 1:03:18 [2] 14.08 km (4:30 / km) +95m 4:21 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Practice got cancelled because of thunder storm. Was happy because meant I could get more sleep. Felt decent on this, went with Maho, Noah and Brandon. 4x30” strides after. Breathing a bit shallow but no other dramas.

Running 1:25:32 [2] 19.31 km (4:26 / km) +145m 4:16 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Midweeker on the revers pooper scooper loop. Not a fan of this loop, can’t see the appeal but Americans are fucking weird so the majority decided to do this over “man bun”, which is a far superior loop in my (correct) opinion. Standard mid week long run feels, nothing too bad which was a win after yesterday’s slogathon.
8 AM

Gym 10:00 [0]

Little bit of core after but was too spangled to get any real benefit.

shoes: Saucony Endorphin Pro 2

6xmile (3’) on the golf course

4:57, 51, 48, 45, 48, 45

Lumpy loop and been raining last few days so quite sloppy in flats. Felt reasonable through 4 then mentally let it slip a little bit. Just need to get in the right mental mindset. Definitely could have made more of an attempt to go with the front 4 lads on the last 2 reps. Tbf they were moving (4:40 and 4:36) especially in that surface. Bit annoyed at myself as today was meant to be hard and just don’t feel liked a hurt myself enough. Solid enough work banked though nevertheless. Fully bonk machined on the way back. Had an IBS episode all of yesterday afternoon and slept bad and probably rushed getting water and food in me this morning so all could have contributed to the bonk.

Racing pre-nationals next Friday. Lucky to make the team after the performance in the last race. Need to rethink my tactics for the next one. Focus on staying relaxed for the first 3/4km instead of fighting for position, then let the magic happen in the second half. In a way may be easier at pre-nats as absolutely no chance will be near the front, so more emphasis on racing smart and picking off places in the second half, rather than taking hold of the race from the gun.

Running 1:42:28 [3] 27.37 km (3:45 / km) +96m 3:41 / km
shoes: NB 880v11 (red)

Wanted to get a good solid grind in this morning so went with the front group. Hitting some nice 3:30s for the middle miles with a chill start and a bit of a waddle back at the end. Felt really strong for the most part, longest “faster long run” I’ve ever done.

Next week will be a biggie. 2 hard session and probs going to be high mileage. Then will start to taper down for the next races.

68km in the last 3 days, ooft. Probs take a rest day tomorrow.

This was a big grind. Loop felt a lot more hilly than strava climb suggests. Boys were pushing the pace aswell so was just dangling off the back for the most part. Fooged by the end.

Gans Creek XC

Thought Detweiller would be my worst race of the year. Coach wanted us to get out and take control of the race. Started hard, couldn’t mentally hack it when people started going through me. Through 1km in 2:49 in 4th place leading the chase pack. Wanted to be on the front as felt confident I could control it. People started passing me just before 2km. In a similar way to detweiller I just lacked the ability to fight for it. Just felt defeated. From then on I just went backwards. No fight just slumbered my way to the finish. Gutted at how bad my mental game is. Need to learn to fight for every single place instead of essentially give up as soon as it doesn’t go my way. I’m meant to be one of the key players in this team, I don’t want to be the reason for us missing out on nationals.

Probably could have run a faster time if I treated it like a tempo. Physically I’m really fit atm, training is going better than ever, I just need to work on my tactics/mental game. Don’t think I’m a guy who can start hard and maintain, I always race better when I work through. Obviously you have to get out fast in these races but it’s a very fine line to ride. Good learning experience but also a tough pill to swallow.
