Race Pace Sprint Round Bath Uni

M21 B Final from British Sprints: 45s quicker than the winner Tom Felbaum (AKA T dog) so quite happy with that. Flow was good and didn't really make any mistakes. Think I took all the best routes as well so overall a very good run. Started to really feel the burn about half way but managed to hold a speed a fair bit quicker than when I did the British sprints back in September last year. Obviously this area is fairly familiar to me so the tricky legs were not as tricky as usual because I already knew where the underpasses were. Still good training and a nice little confidence boost. Shin was niggly but not painful (2/10 pain) but will most likely stay away from running until I touch down in Denmark.

Just checked the splits was 1:40 mins ahead of Alice Leake (Course Winner) at the point where I stopped. Don't think that's too shabby but obviously hard to compare as she is a woman and I am unfortunately not one of those....

I'm an idiot, had 2 courses to do but printed off 2 copies of the same course. Ah well did most of the W21 Heat course from British sprint in reverse, did this pretty hard. Nav was good and running speed felt ok. Shin niggly no worse but no better than wednesday. Will probably dive into it again tomorrow and do the other course. A bit of a risk maybe but then I will take the following 4 days off before running in the 2 days up to the sprint. Not ideal prep but at least I am getting some tekkers in before the big day.

Morning Ride

41.4km / 27.6kph

Just didn't feel very good. A bit drained from the start so called it a day at 90 because I was just feeling a bit spaced. Still a decent length ride and should maybe start thinking about calming it down about now.

Thursday Jun 27, 2019 #

Note

Shin is right on the edge. Very annoying as Milage hasn’t been high. Right shin so not the winter injury one but same place. Had a niggle there for a few weeks but I just need to be careful now as it seems a little more inflamed than usual. Only going to run once more this week (Sprint O) then maybe a couple of times in the taper week but keep the cycling up. Very annoying as I haven’t got in as much technical training as I would have liked but fitness wise I think I will be all good. Just sad that it hasn’t gone to plan for me at any point this year. Hopefully my hard work x-training will pay off but guess we’ll just wait and see....

Cafe ride with Roanne, she was on a chunky hybrid so pace was pretty slow (20kph). Lovely day and very nice route. Pretty enjoyable but heat really took it out of me. Feeling a bit spaced now lol. Top quality cake at the castle comb cafe although flat white artwork could do with some work. 7.5/10.

Average Paces: 3:17,24,21,21,20,21/km

Ok session, happy that shin held up. Undulating grass loop round some playing fields with a pretty strong wind. Bailed from the last rep 3:30mins in due to a crippling stitch which was very annoying as legs felt absolutely fine. Session was good otherwise and got 28:30mins of good work in, not pushing too much just finding a nice grindy pace. Fitness is there but stomach issues haven't got better. Got a blood test today, actually hoping for something to come up so that I can get on the medication and hopefully sort it out in the next 10 days.

WD - Had to wait about 15mins for stitch to settle, felt like I was being stabbed in the chest.

Hilly 45. Planned to be 75 long run but right shin was niggly so decided to cut short. Wasn't particularly enjoyable as my mind was constantly focused on my shin. Will probably take the next 2 days off running and do my session on Wednesday (not tuesday) so it can settle a bit. It wasn't painful but too close to JWOC to be taking any risks. On a positive not I was fairly strong on the climbs today.

Post-run ride

14.0km / 29.6kph

Making up for not finishing the long run. Didn't eat after my run and went hard on all the uphills to push myself close to the bonk. Felt pretty dead but ground out a nice pace considering the damp roads, wind and undulating loop. Mixed week with stomach issues and shin, but got in some good hours and a couple of quality sessions.

Been very down all day after kitty, who's been part of the family for the last 13 years got put down. Didn't feel like doing much but finally managed to motivate myself for this. Just chilled didn't push the pace too much. Felt comfy but chest was still tight so was cautious not to push past the point where I start to breathe irregularly. Quite happy overall, legs seemed untroubled at this pace. Need to get these stomach issues sorted. Once I do I reckon they'll be a naughty piece of fitness unraveled ;)

Wow that hurt a lot more than it was meant to. Aimed to do the first rep very steady and then work into it. The plan was to hardly look at the watch and go off feel. 3:13 pace for the first rep lol but felt surprisingly alright. Felt fine on the first half of the second rep but as I turned my stomach tightened and things went from good to bad very quickly. Was a bit of a struggle at the end of the second rep, developed a stitch becasue was struggling with breathing. Took an extra 30s recovery becasue really wanted to finish. Just tried my best to relax on the last rep not caring if the pace dropped off. Stomach was still tight but was able to control and relax my breathing. Grinding hard near the end but got the job done. Happy to finish with some good pace but didn't make it easy for myself. All done on gravel track with heavy mileage shoes. Improvement from Tuesday and hopefully these stomach issues will go after a few more days on the antacids.

Aborted 2x5km

No idea what happened but felt uncomfortable from the off. Something not right in my chest. Just gradually got tighter. Went through the first 5km in 17:06 but already felt a bit dead. Jogged for a K and then started the next 5km but only made it 900m in at which point I was really struggling to breathe. Very similar feels to what I was getting last summer. Maybe stomach acid playing up but hard to say if this is stomach or lungs. Will have another go at a session on thursday and take some antacids before. If I have the same issue then might need to back off because most likely underlying illness. Basically this is really frustrating as I thought I was making some real progress. Ah well on with the next one.

Steady 80 SLR

Was a bit unsteady going into this after the shin niggles yesterday. Shins were a little bit tight in the first half but then no pain in the second half so great success! Nice loop with one bit climb, legs felt decent so decided to press on a little bit to test myself out. No major bonk which is nice considering how few long runs I've done recently.

BOK Blast Sprint Race 1

Very wet conditions so took corners very cautiously. Started timidly but got into it. A few longer legs and wooded sections meant it didn't have a very sprinty feel but still good practice. Ran past an alley way and maybe took one or two bad routes but overall solid enough. Took the W by just under 2 mins.

BOK Blast Sprint Race 2

Preferred this course. Round the uni campus with more controls. Absolutely tipping it down at the start so again corners were taken with caution. Felt more comfortable in this race and was flowing well. Made an annoying 10s mistake at #6 running down a dead end and another small miss at #21, but overall fairly satisfied with this. Need to work on not switching off which is something I've started doing on long legs which has lead to the majority of my mistakes in the past few races. Shin's ever so slightly dodgy so will be careful.

Brought some water this time so was a much more pleasant experience. Pretty windy today and had a big headwind for the last 10km. Felt fairly strong and probably pushed the pace a bit too much. Really need to try and chill out on these rides otherwise I'll just end up knackering myself. Would be good to find somebody to ride with becasue might make it easier to chill the pace.

20min Tempo

Along canal tow path, all gravel/loose grit. Constant rain and hitting a big puddle every other step made it far from ideal conditions. Planned a 30T at just sub 3:30 pace but set off a bit fast and decided to try and hold the higher pace for 20mins rather than drop off for 30mins. Felt relatively compfy but became a bit of a grind in the last 5mins. Still happy with the average pace and pace didn't drop off too much after the "optomistic" start (3:16/km fist 10min / 3:20/km last 10min). Already feel in much better shape than this time last year and excited to push on in these next 3 weeks.

JWOC Test Middle

Started hard, spiked #1 then spiked what I thought was #2 but was actually a control about 20m away (didn't have descriptions). This set me down the wrong re-entrant to 3, but relocated only losing 20s. #4 was good but twisted my ankle exiting it. Bit of a banana to #5. Absolutely gassed up the hill to #6 and wen't into the green a bit early. Exiting 6 tiredness caused me to get exit direction a bit wrong so ran off down the wrong path, noticed 100m later having just run down a massive hill. Race mindset switched off at this point. Just ground to a halt a couple of minutes later. Nothing left. Ah well good weekend.

Started a bit wobbly but not too bad. Bad exit on the long leg but picked a good route so didn't lose time. Then from #5 to #11 I picked up a train of punters, got distracted, then fucked around quite a lot. Lost #1:45 at 11 which was the biggest one. From the spectator loop to the finish ~30mins I started to feel a bit bonky but kept my head and kept it clean. Happy with my finish and not too far off the pace of the big boys so satisfied enough but need to cut out the mistakes in the middle of the race.

JWOC Test Sprint +31s

Pretty scrappy race so surprised to not be a million miles off. Just a bit rusty but seemed to be shifting ok. Made a 5s mistake on #5 and #9 just exiting in the wrong direction and having to come back on myself. Made a really bad route choice to #11 losing 10s. The rest was ok so was surprised to only be 30s off the lead and 25s off Fred. Need a bit more training before the big one but definitely positives to take from today. Really need a good sleep, been getting 6 hours or less the last week which means I haven't been able to shake this cold. Going to stop running until it gets better because training through it is clearly not working. Will play it by ear.
