Bit of a spontaneous one. Original plan was to go on the treadmill when we got back to Peoria. But cba doing that late and decided there was enough grass about to squeeze out the run in Chicago. Kept about 75% of it on grass and the body felt good so pretty happy. Felt good and another belter of a day. Solid week under the belt, no cross training last 3 days because of travel but will get back on the grind next week.

In Chicago for the weekend. Nice run out along the lake front to the Bears Stadium. First bit with Ro but mostly solo. Really nice city, some proper big boy skyscrapers. Couldn’t ask for a better morning aswell. Class run overall.

5mile tempo

More snow. Original plan was to go on the trail and I’m too stubborn to give in and run on the treadmill so bailed out onto country roads. Quite a hilly out and back. Seemed to be always going up or down. Dirty headwind on the first half. Felt a bit grindy at half way, but then turned and was blessed with a cheeky tailwind on the way home. Never really looked at watch, just focused on effort. Overall very happy with this. Moving in the right direction.

60’ aquajog on my lonesome. Been using the shit belt recently because feel like I don’t work hard enough with the normal belt and I’m too dense to aquajog without a belt, so this is a happy medium. Leaving it at this today, been a heavy past couple of days and want the leggies to feel solid for the tempo tomorrow.

Biggest rolling week (hours) ever I believe.

Easy round the golf course. Set off a bit later than everyone else because had a doc appointment, but quickly found George on the course so joined him for the remainder of his run. General good feelings all things considered, pretty much nothing from the hip which was excellent. Doctor doesn’t seem too concerned about the hip tightness, just got to keep tabs on it.

Had a mature discussion with coach in his office today, requesting that I run later on a Wednesday in order to get more sleep. Agreed to disagree but at the end of the day he’s funding me out here so guess 9:30 will have to be my new bed time. Just got to get the old circadian rhythm shifted back.

Would love to run whenever we want but unfortunately too many Americans on the team who don’t actually like running/doing it for the wrong reasons and physically can’t run unless they’re in a group of 20 guys. In my view you shouldn’t be out here if you can’t motivate yourself to train properly solo.

5x5’ (2’ jog)

Ooft, bit of a kick up the arse. In the dome and really early again. Wore mileage shoes because calf still a bit fugged. Went with the MD boys on there mile rep to start. Silly idea as got dragged to a 5 flat mile (3:07/km), which bites when you’re a bit out of shape and have to keep the recoveries at an honest jog. Dropped the pace for the rest, 3:10-3-15/km on the watch for the others but make that more like 3:13-3:18/km as small loop. Solid enough tbh but was hurting a lot by the end. Happy I finished, expected the first few sessions to be horrible so just got to keep my head down.

Longest run to date, on the treadmill. Started with a breakfast mile then got into it a bit more. Gradually moving the pace up throughout the run. Nothing silly just 4:15s by the end. Hip better again, relieved as was fairly concerned about it on Friday.

Post-run aquajog with Drew and Amelia. More of a recovery job as was too bonked to get the HR up. Another 10 hour week under the belt. Just need to keep ticking these off and the shape will come sooner rather than later.

Mileage also starting to increase a bit more. 2 sessions next week, should be fairly chill ones but nice to be getting properly back into things.

4mile tempo in the Dome

Here we go then, first proper session in almost exactly 4 months. Another stupidly early (5:30am) wake up. Decided to hop in with the girls group who were doing 2x2mile. Sat in with them for the first 2 mile then did around 3mins solo, then they hopped back in. Their second one was meant to be faster and Nicola kept trying to overtake me so just went with the pace Nicola was requesting which happened to be around 3:20s (she’s rapid). Honestly felt fine throughout, bit of a shock to the system but progressed down to 3:20s without much bother which is a promising starting point.

Honestly expected this to be a fair bit slower and a lot more painful. Big relief that I might actually be able to get into some shape for track. Sacrum area still tight (not bad and wouldn’t be worried about it under normal circumstances), will try and persuade them to give me an MRI because want to know if anything is still wrong. Would rather take 4 weeks off now rather than 12 weeks later down the line.

6 miles on the treadmill. Hip tight as usual but again didn’t get any worse. Legs were tired after a big day yesterday but felt better as the run went on. Becker came over to provide some chat which made the run go past a lot faster.

7 miles in the dome including 4x200m strides. Stupidly early wake up (5:50am) but felt fine after my coffee. Felt solid enough, still a bit tight in the hip but coped well with the strides. Felt much smoother than expected, not particularly fast (33-->31) but nice to get the legs turning a bit. Got a tempo lined up for Friday, feeling more and more like a runner now.

Last minute decision to run outside as it snowed last night and thought the dusting may make the impact on the road a bit less. Out and back with Will, Ice and Coach Maty. Hip was tight the whole time and it had me a bit worried but tbh didn’t get any worse throughout so maybe just early morning vibes and lack of stretching. Longest run to date, felt relatively good otherwise.

5mile steady progression (4:20 —> 3:28/km)

Mile Splits: 6:58, 6:40, 6:18, 5:58, 5:36

First “session” in 118 days. Did it on the treadmill at 1% gradient. Little bit of a shock to the system seeing as haven’t really run under 4:30/km since coming back. Although aerobically felt good the whole way through. Let’s felt fairly tired in the last mile but tbh quite happy I was able to hold that pace with relative comfort. Going for take a few weeks to learn how to mentally adapt to running hard but this is a good start.

Tried taking my shirt off but some pseudo alpha told me to put it back on. I asked him to pass it to me and he refused so I refused to put it on as didn’t want to stop. Unfortunately he then told me he’d get the manager so I gave in, not worth it. Did mean I had to momentarily stop but it was in the first mile so didn’t really affect anything. Don’t understand why you’re not allowed to run topless in gyms especially as they’re properly warm inside, but there you go.

Another 10km on the treadmill. A little bit worried before because had some hip tightness but was actually solid and didn’t have any troubles during the run. It’s bloody hot inside the gym so was getting a filthy sweat on. Quite a big jump up in running this week but all seems to be going relatively well.

80’ on the bike. Did the first 70’ steady with a 10’ warm down. 220W and HR ~160 for the steady which was solid enough. Felt pretty grindy anyway.

10-kegs on the treadmill. Felt fitter than any run previously, no issues felt quite easy. Hip a little bit tight but haven’t been stretching that much so will get on top of that. HR 162 so a lot lower than previous runs (been up near 170). Still pretty high, would normally be about 145-150 for this sort of run but should be down to that level in a few more weeks.

Steady 75’ on the “smart” bike. Time went fast and this was a good grind. Funny compared to 2 weeks ago when I had covid. Back then was a massive struggle to hold the same power for half the time. Shows body is pretty well recovered now.

About 1 foot of snow fell last night so bit of a nightmare as quite a lot of facilities closed. Luckily team have put down some matts upstairs in the basketball stadium. 220m loop so just ran laps of it. Joined quite late so only had the boys for half of it. Honestly quite fun, had the tunes blaring out. Everyone running quite fast, got pretty badly dropped by most people. Relief that sacrum is all good running on a different surface to the treadmill.

Good session. Did 4x4 BB back squat, which was the first time doing that exercise in about 2 years. Managed 155lb (70kg) for the last set without too much trouble, which came as a bit of a surprise. No doubt the doms will be biting tomorrow.
