Orienteering race (HH Ace of Hearts) 2:14:47 [4] **** 17.7 km (7:37 / km) +352m 6:56 / km
ahr:142 max:161 spiked:15/27c

Black. Nominal 12.8km/280m

Micro-navigating unrelenting long technical legs across the forest with no clear path alternatives or much in the way of obvious waypoints made my brain hurt as much as my legs. I seemed to lack the ability to find the controls once I was within the circle today and many times ran loops to find them. Not connecting very well with the map and often turning L away from the circle rather than R into it (and vice versa). There were a few places where the planner had placed controls for other courses in parallel features, which only added to my frustration but I guess I should expect that on a black.

Had a big fall halfway round and took a chunk out of my left knee. Hard going but a nice day to be out in a forest. It's been quite a while since a long course took me more than 2 hours to finish, but at least this was my first black result.

A litany of stupid errors: http://www.happyherts.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#283&a...

To add to my weekend, my car started making some odd whining noise today. I know how it feels. I had a worrisome moment on the M40 coming home when I thought I could smell something untoward, but it turned out to be coming from the car in front. Might have to spend next weekend sorting out a new crap car.

Orienteering race (TVOC Street-O) 1:00:15 [4] *** 10.99 km (5:29 / km) +82m 5:17 / km
ahr:146 max:161 spiked:19/27c

TVOC Street-O Oxford

Felt v. sluggish, and a bit of trouble finding #11, up on a wall, early on. Went for all the big scores in Headington Hill/East Oxford and planned on more dense scoring later in town when my legs'd be tired, but it was hilly and I hit a couple of big dead ends around #40 and #20 which probably cost me 5 mins/40 points. Knackered after the long run from #20 to #37! Nigel B went the other way around (town first) which was probably better, but hey, let's take a risk or two ;-)

Looks like all the wise guys went into town first, there were some good scoring areas in the SW of the map by the river. Without my blunders at #40 and #20 I'd have made 490-500 points, so not too terrible.
