Orienteering race (SOC November Classic) 1:29:55 [4] *** 12.2 km (7:22 / km) +253m 6:41 / km
ahr:146 max:162 spiked:7/16c (injured)

M50L (course 3). Nominal 9.9km, 240m

Dire email warning about the muddiness of the assembly field the evening before led me to park 1.5km away and walk in. Another M21 did the same, and we were both picked up by a chap in a people carrier who then got stuck in the entry to the field until several of us pushed him up towards parking. It looked pretty horrible for those leaving later, I didn't mind my little warm-down walk back to the car.

Felt pretty tired after yesterday's effort so just trundled round really (maybe swapping to M50S would have been prudent). Very soggy underfoot - paths were streams, streams/bogs were worse, so I was wary of my ankle where normally I'd have bashed through. Many of the early controls seemed quite hard to find in the open forest although I think in general my rough navigation has improved a lot in the past 18 months - I have a much better idea of when I'm near/in the circle.

Completely ran out of steam by #8 and started leapfrogging a guy in a dark blue top (and couldn't get away from him until #13). Then made a gross error of paths in the open area after #10 - ran to features rather than my compass. Realised I was too far N and wasn't running parallel to the marked fence so headed due S until I found it. Shortly after, I stopped to think at a path junction puzzled as to which way to go when I realised #11 was 10m away rather than 250m as I thought! Oh dear.

After that, mostly simplified where I could but got horribly bogged down going XC out of #12 to higher land beyond.

21st/46 M50, and 36th/71 on course 3. Fair enough given present form.

Orienteering race (Southampton city race) 44:03 [5] *** 8.38 km (5:15 / km) +55m 5:05 / km
ahr:158 max:168 spiked:21/31c (injured)

Course 2, nominal 6.0km

Wrong side of trees in avenue for #2 (description said middle, but the unit was on the W side). Wrong side of wall for #7 (misread ctrl description, +15s). Misled by vague ctrl description at #12 (+35s): why not say W or E side of building corner? Overshot #13 and then left it in the wrong direction, not looking ahead, distracted by previous error +50s. Overshot #14 (+10s). Misleading description for #16 +45s. It could've been more help with an E or W arrow to indicate which side of the wall, and basically turned the control into a 50/50 guess. Dithered over the right level to be on for #20 (+15s) and #21 (+20s). Overshot the correct alley for #24 (+15s). Off target for road crossing at #28 (+20s).

25th/97. Knackered by halfway, disappointingly not very run-fit; the timed out crossing at #28 couldn't come soon enough! Swollen ankle just about coped OK.
