Orienteering race (Galuzsnya) 36:10 [4] *** 5.1 km (7:05 / km)
spiked:16/17c shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

1050 - Well, the first WOC race arrived, the Middle Distance Q. I was still suffering the final lingers of the cold, but in good enough health to run without any problems. I went okay, but felt sluggish and weak, my cold probably cost me 2 minutes or so in speed. Technically I was quite happy. Only 1 control error (30s) and 1 less than great route choice (20s). Forest was fast and runnable, which wasn't great. Also, the light green veg was very hazy and could probably have been almost all white. I finished in 29th place, 9:59 down on the winner (Novikov) and 5:00 down in 15th place qualification. I was surprised I was that close - happy, but then still disappointed that I wasn't 1 - 2 minutes faster.

GPS measured 5.708km in distance.

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [3] 2.5 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

Good warm up session.

Felt quite decent after the race, with the cold clearing up nicely afterwards. Looks like I'll be much better for the Long Q on Monday.

Orienteering (Middle Q Model) 30:11 [3] *** 4.0 km (7:33 / km) +121m 6:33 / km
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

1056 - Went to the Middle Qualie Model map. Interesting dirt road to get to the official car park... cut into the bottom of a dry river valley. Went round all the controls, not too much of a problem. Felt quite happy with my map contact, very fast and runnable area, still one or two questionables with the vegetation mapping. There's been an improvement in my cold, but it won't be 100% by the Middle Q race.

Map attached... with the course until by GPS went bezerk.

Note

Had a bit of a relapse after yesterday's training, so another day closeted in my room. No more throat infection, just a mild fever. Annoying.

Orienteering (Olasz-kapu) 54:40 [2] *** 6.55 km (8:21 / km) +274m 6:54 / km
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

1120 - Official WOC training session. Still not a great map, too outdated and a few errors in mapping here and there. Heavens knows why this was chosen as the final training by the officials. Cold is still lingering, so took it easy. Cut off a few extra loops where I knew the map was bad from my training here in May.

Orienteering warm up/down 24:55 [1] 2.25 km (11:04 / km)
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

Warm up and down between the car park and the start and finish.

Orienteering (Kisfennsik) 44:33 [3] *** 5.0 km (8:55 / km) +296m 6:52 / km
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

1543 - Ran an unofficial training (middle) on a map that I hadn't yet trained on. Very nice area, although one or two parts have had extensive increases in undergrowth. Someone had been kind enough to leave chevron tape on most of the control sites.

Orienteering warm up/down 11:00 [1] 1.0 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: V-J Integrator Black/Red

Slow jog as a warm up to the start, which was also the top of the course.

Flew to Hungary for WOC.

Note
(sick)

Stayed indoors the whole day. Got back from the run last night with a sore throat. Not good given that WOC starts on Sunday.

Note

Out of interest, here's most of the map for stage 4, the Lidernen map which we never ran on. Big climb, almost all of it in one leg.

Trail Running race (Kempten Hill Run) 31:23 [4] 6.41 km (4:54 / km) +288m 4:00 / km
shoes: Salomon 3D S-Lab Red #1

1900 - Felt like my legs were a bit stiff. So decided to go take them to a nice hill race. It was a mix of track and tar, starting in Kempten and finishing on a nearby hill. Small little loop of the suburbs to start, then some track in a forest next to a beautfiul river, past a 'Rapunzels Tower', under a railway bridge and then a final sting in the tail over the last 600m to the hill top. Great fun, it even stopped raining during the race. Finished in the mid-40's or so, winner in 24 mins or something ridiculous. This was the first of 5 consecutive evenings of hill races in a series, all roughly this distance and all around northern Switzerland.

Here's my GPS route. Working great.
