Trail Running race (Moon Chaser Night Trail) 50:36 [4] 10.0 km (5:04 / km)
shoes: Salomon 3D S-Lab Red #4

At the Big Red Barn again. A good storm just before the race caused some chaos. Race became unofficial due to timing problems.

Otherwise a nice run, with a good course. Not too many wet patches or mud as the rain was over quickly and we stayed dry from the knees up. Probably finished around 15th place and felt decent the whole way. Happy with my time on this type of course.

Trail Running race (Hobbit 100) 7:43:27 [5] 50.0 km (9:16 / km) +3581m 6:49 / km

Sore legs on the start of Day 2, but decided to go out hard up Cata peak anyway. My plan was to push hard to Mnyameni Hut, then recover as quickly as possible and then hang in for the rest of the day.

I set the pace up the hill, going over the top in 41 mins, which should be a PB. In a group with Ryno, Stijn and Bennie all the way down to Mnyameni as well, where we arrived 6 minutes ahead of last years time but still 2 behind record pace. Stijn and Ryno left me there whilst Bennie and I went up the next hill at a more comfortable pace in 3rd/4th.

Felt good on this climb as well as down the Wolf River, enjoying the company of another racer for a change. Got to the Wolf River marshal on my PB time and then also at the Schwarzwald turnoff.

The climb up from the road was more eroded than previous, but Bennie and I felt good. Having him there set a better pace for me and we covered the section to the Hog well. We had a good tail wind with cooler temperatures. Hit the 8km mark near the top a bit off pace (5 mins), probably due to taking it slower over the rocks.

We had a new finish section again, going along the top of the ridge to Kettlespout Falls before dropping towards the Arminel Hotel. This is the longest route yet. Felt pretty decent on the down, so may have come close to my record time if it has been the same finish point. The falls were defying gravity by this time due to the strong winds and we got nicely soaked when we passed over the top.

Finished tied 3rd with Bennie, with Ryno taking another record and Stijn a comfortable 2nd. This pushed me up to 4th overall, as I wasn't able to catch enough time on Ray. Very happy with the Day 2 result.

Day 1 of the Hobbit 100.

Tough hot day out there. I felt surprisingly good at the start and led for a few kms before letting Ryno through. A chase group of 5 went after him just before McNaughtons Krans.

Thereafter I settled down conservatively and though I was running slower than last years poor run. Got to Gwiligwili 10 mins faster, which was a nice suprise. I kept this 10 min advantage to Dontsa Hut, mantaining a conservative pace. Got caught by the first lady near the hut and she would have run away easily if she didn't stop every km to ask me for directions.

The climb up Dontsa falls was better than previous years, obviously due to my focus on conservation, but with very hot weather in the sun (and humid in the forests) I was still suffering. Caught one of the faster starters (Bennie) and got caught by a 2nd lady as well, forming a loose group up to Doornkop. Had some problems finding the trail through the bracken and brambles and lost about 5 mins plus, getting to the next marshal point behind last years time. From thereon felt good again, but couldn't keep up with the first lady on the climb into Cata Hut.

Finished 8th for the day, 10 minutes slower than 2012. Lot of people suffered in the heat and there was a high dropout rate. Ryno won in a new record, Stijn 2nd, Ray 3rd and Jacques 4th.

1:6'000 - Garstkloof Score-O

40 minute score event around Garskloof Nature area. Managed to run it well under the cut off time. Nice leg stretcher and good training. Concentration wasn't there to start with, but kept better map contact later on.

Trail Running race (Kyalami Country Club) 20:36 [3] 4.0 km (5:09 / km)
shoes: Salomon 3D S-Lab Red #4

Feels like I'm now over the flu.

Headlight not working when I got to the start line. :-(

Started off slow, but my body really felt bad for the first km. Then it got better. Was also managing to see a bit, but couldn't go as fast without a headlamp. Decided to not do the 2nd lap and rather finish unoffiicially and do 4km instead for both recovery and lighting reasons.
