Orienteering race (Metrogaine) 1:30:32 [3] 15.35 km (5:54 / km)
ahr:137 max:169 shoes: Asics DynaFlyte Grey/Lime

Metrogaine in Randpark Ridge with Ewan B.

One of the more fun metrogaines due to the very high number of CPs (61). Lots of low scorers which we discounted in route planning, with 10 mins or so to look at the map before the start. Think I almost got the best plan for our speed and cleaned up all the 50/60s, only missing 1 x 40. There was a definite route to clean up all controls in less than 17.5km.

Ended up 1st men's pair on the 90-min score. Alex and Steph got 100 more points, but also created their own 100-min category when they left immediately after being told we can look at our maps..... :-D

Trail Running (Rondebult) 21:56 [4] 5.0 km (4:23 / km) +11m 4:20 / km

Rondebult Parkrun - looked boring on google maps but the course was actually quite fun. Essentially a run around a whole lot of cabbage fields, but the mud patches and sprinkler irrigation made it interesting. Started slow with a warm-up and picked up pace after 2kms. Got my 4th win by about 30s as there weren't any strong athletes around.

Small turnout but well organized and very impressive volunteers. They even have a printer and laptop ready to assist people who don't have the ability to register online and print out their barcodes at home / work.

Back to my home parkrun for a change. Fast start but then died before recovering a bit. Didn't realise that I was close to my PB.

Orienteering race (ROC Rogaine) 5:58:04 [4] *** 22.5 km (15:55 / km) +1300m 12:21 / km
ahr:145 max:176 spiked:32/36c shoes: Salomon Fellraiser yellow / bl

The annual ROC Rogaine, starting this year at Thabela Thabeng in the Parys Domeland. Ryno got I’ll a couple weeks before and had to unfortunately pull out but he got Kelvin Trautman to substitute and it worked perfectly.

36 cps, to be taken first odds, then evens, or vice versa. We took 11 minutes to plan our route, a bit longer than anticipated but important given this twist to the rules. We went with evens first and got all 18 before swapping over to odds at exactly 3:00 into the 6-hour time limit. Conditions were incredibly hot (35’C?) and I suffered quite a bit, so we cut out a loop of 3 controls (40,10,10) at about 1.5h to go. Got the rest as a result, just missing a 10p near the finish on the way in, as we came in with 2 mins to spare.

We got the win by a large margin over the two jabberwock teams, but I was completely destroyed afterwards, even though we didn’t do much running due to the heat, thick bush and steep climbs in places. Has taken me 2 days to recover.
