Babcock Bog and Boulder 6hr Rogaine

I wanted to check out the new map of this area so I decided to sign up for the rogaine and go based on feel. We got maps at 10 and I quickly planned a route. I opted for 2 loops that hit most of the high point controls and skipped a lot of low pointers. My plan was to finish the first loop (S of the main road) and assess whether I just wanted to be done or if I wanted to continue on and do the second loop (N of the main road).

Started off at 11 and only a few teams headed to my first control. By the time I punched I was alone in the forest :) Kept the pace very easy and focused on staying hydrated and eating all the snacks. Marched along through my first series of controls with no trouble. First bobble was 85. I attacked from the stream junction to the south, but ended up a little too far east. Crossed paths with a couple other wandering teams as I went back to the rough open to reattack. This time I saw the box hanging from a tree when I reached the northern end of the rough open, but no flag… As I got closer I saw the flag crumpled at the base of the rock. Punched and re-hung the flag.

Continued along through the next few flags, getting into more rocky ground. Another bobble on 66. I ended up a little too far south and tried following some evergreens to relocate, which didn’t work out. I then went north to the marshy area and in from there. Smooth sailing after that to 36 where I stopped to assess. Saw a few other teams move through as I was refilling my water and emptying my shoes of plant matter. I decided I was feeling pretty good and the weather was beautiful so I might as well continue meandering along.

The navigation north of the road was a little easier and there were more trails to speed up travel. No troubles with any of these flags. As I expected, the weakest link ended up being my feet. They got pretty tired after rock hopping to 76 (~4.5 hours in). I was happy they held up for that long and at that point I was almost done anyway. Grabbed the last few controls on my planned route and finished in a little over 5 hours. Very enjoyable day in the woods! Managed to finish first overall female - not bad for almost 8 months pregnant.

Around the Biltmore Estate during our trip to Asheville. Gorgeous weather. Very pleasant bike ride. Would definitely come back to Asheville when I can do some real adventuring.
