WPOC North Park
Red - 6.5 km (255 m)

Rained pretty heavily the entire time. It had been raining for the past couple days, so everything was soaked and the streams were really high. 1-3 went smoothly. Crossing the stream from 1-3 I was in over my waist (it would normally be below the knee). Slight bobble on 5. I misread the map and thought the thicket was closer to the woods, so quite a bit of hesitation in the field. Fine to 6, but the terrain didn't really do what I was expecting. Opted to go through the woods to 7 (instead of going down to the trail). It was definitely slower, but I was tired of running on trails/roads. The woods had lots of tall grass, which made for slow going. I was also slow coming in to the circle as I didn't want to pass the boulder. Went a little out of the way after 9 to cross the stream on a bridge. Not really sure the map was representative of the fields around 10, but I found it pretty quickly. Hit 11 right on. Decided to cross the stream and take the trail to 12 - I was not interested in bashing through green. It was up to my waist again and flowing quickly. Probably not that safe to be wading across, but I hugged a tree and made it fine. Last few controls were fine. Saw Kevin at 13 and watched him run the wrong way.

Red Classic - 7.3 km (270 m) - 18 c
Superfly Marsh

Kevin and I volunteered to prerun the course today. We got up early and started just after 7 a.m. The cooler temperature was great! It was nice to not have the distraction of other runners, but at the same time I definitely have more motivation to move quickly when I'm out there with other people. Really enjoyed the course. The terrain out here is so cool!

Used the marked swamp crossing on the way to 2 as we were told the marsh was really deep in places. Not sure it was necessary - the marsh didn't seem that bad. Chased a herd of cows around the S part of the course. The flag at 6 had been knocked over, so I paused to set that back up and unvelcro the flag so it hung nicely. Felt like it took forever to get to 7. Navigation was smooth, but my legs were beat. Slow approach to 9. Overshot 10 although I did realize it before going down into the wrong reentrant. Mistake on 12. I read the clue as marsh and decided that it should be in a low spot. If I had read the map that was clearly not the case. Ran to a big reentrant and then slowly meandered my way back to the correct location. Went to the wrong boulder on 17 - quick correction. Not a great route choice to 18. I should have gone to the field on either side of the hill, but instead I just chugged through the scrub brush.

Had a great time in Wyoming this week. Sad that it's over, but my legs are definitely ready for a break!
