CNYO 24h Rogaine
Team Topo the Mountain with Kevin

First 24 h rogaine with Kevin! I did one 24 h rogaine a couple years ago, but this was Kevin’s first 24 h foot event. In the course notes it stated that the top teams would probably clear the course, so we planned a roughly CW loop that hit all the CPs. If we kept up a steady pace and had clean navigation it seemed doable (that didn’t happen…).

Started off at noon on Saturday. We were a couple minutes down the trail when Kevin realized he didn’t have the GPS tracker, so we went back and grabbed it. That meant we were on our own to the first CP, which is always fine by me. We really didn’t see that many people during the race, just a team every once and a while. The first ~10 h went really well. We kept up a steady walk and my navigation was solid. Our only mistake through the SE section was 35. It was a cairn on a hilltop and the hilltop was huge! We wandered around for a bit. Kevin also forgot to punch 49. It wouldn’t have changed our placing, so not a big deal.

We were well ahead of our time estimates after finishing the SE section. It started to get dark when we hit 46 and it was full dark after our long road trek. My navigation wasn’t that great in the dark. Lots of bobbles. We drifted on our bearing headed to 83. Hit the property boundary and were able to correct from there. Went too far N on 63. They weren’t big errors, but it felt like we lost so much time. We hit 73 right on, which I was worried about. We were then too far N on 74. Hit the trail past it and took the trail around to the stream to be safe.

Made it back to the S/F area after ~14.5 h. We had cleared the S section of the map and were still feeling pretty decent. Stopped for a while to rest our feet, restock on food/water and eat some snacks. It felt great to sit.

Headed back out on the N section of the map at ~3:10 a.m. And had some major struggles right off the bat. We didn’t go far enough on 64 and wandered around the wrong set of small streams for a long time before I realized what we had done. We then drifted on our way to 82. I tried to correct off a trail, but I don’t think that trail was on a map, so we ended up in the flat area W of the CP. Finally figured it out. And then got super confused exiting from 82 to the road… We should have just stopped to take a nap. It would have been more efficient. I’m not sure why we had so much trouble. Usually at night it is a lack of focus that leads to mistakes, but it seemed like we were putting in the effort and still wandering all over the place.

I lost all motivation at this point. There was no longer any way we were going to clear. We just trudged along for a while. On the positive side, my navigation was clean for the rest of the race. The sun came up on our way to 51. We started dropping controls in the NW section and decided if we had the energy there was still time to finish the loop around the S/F.

We had a long road trek to get back from the NW section to the S/F area. Kevin’s shin had been bothering him throughout the race and this road section was the last straw. We got 2 CPs and then Kevin decided he was done after 69. That was fine by me, my feet hurt. We slowly trudged back to the finish and finished a couple hours early.

Overall this was a very well organized race with a challenging control layout and accurate control placement. I also thought the water stops were very well placed. I would definitely come back.

Super happy with how my feet held up! They didn’t start to really bother me until 18 h, and even then it wasn’t until 22 h that I couldn’t easily ignore the pain any longer. I was also pleasantly surprised with how well I held up physically. The hills never felt that bad and it was really only my feet slowing me down at the end.

Finished 3rd overall. We weren’t even close to the first two teams. Definitely a learning experience! Now I want to do another one :)
