Adventure Race race 9:54:00 [5] 59.4 mi (10:00 / mi)
Epic Edition: Ludington
Fairly late start for an AR, so we had plenty of time in the morning to organize gear and food. Maps for all but one trekking section were handed out at 9, so we had lots of planning to do. Put together our route, did some last minute prep and we were off!
Trek (LSP N): Started off on foot. We decided to go CCW...and so did everyone else. There was a bit of a back-up getting to the first CP, but then it started to clear out. Hit the first few points with no trouble. Then messed up on 4. Thought we hadn't gone far enough but weren't sure, re-attacked and it turned out we had passed it. Probably lost 10 minutes on this one. Hit the rest with no troubles. We maintained a pretty steady jog through most of this section.
Bike: Hopped on our bikes to head to the ferry. We decided to skip CP11 and CP14 - leaving them for the bike back, since we weren't sure if we would be tight on time. That would also get us to the ferry right away to avoid any lines. We were the second team through the TA and got right on the pontoon that took us across the lake.
Trek (N): So happy with my navigation on this leg, clean all the way through. Some hesitation on 18, but we just hadn't gone far enough. Kept up a jog while we were on roads.
Paddle: First team into the paddle TA, but we hadn't hit 2 of the bike CPs yet, so it was kind of a false lead. Took off downstream in our tandem kayak and maybe 10 minutes in BF snapped his paddle in half....we seem to have pretty bad luck on the paddle legs at Epic. Ended up using one full kayak paddle and half of the broken one as a makeshift canoe paddle. We swapped every 10 minutes to try to keep the arms on the kayak paddle fresh. Couldn't get much leverage with the 'canoe' paddle since we were sitting so low, and it didn't have a handle... Took a wrong channel in an attempt to get to the island with CP21, lost some time there, but we got to the island eventually. Wind picked up when we reached the lake so it was kind of choppy, but not too bad.
Bike: Back to the start area. We had time, so hit CP11 and CP14 on the way back. It was quite windy along the lake and I was feeling pretty terrible, so I just tucked in behind BF and he powered along.
Trek (LSP S): Got the map for the last o section (13 points!) and made a quick plan. Shoved all our gear in one pack to save weight and took off. I was starting to feel better, so we were able to jog on trails. Didn't have any trouble with the first few points, great views from some of the hills along the lake. It was looking like we would have time to clear the course, so we were moving as quickly as we could. Then we couldn't find 32...saw tons of teams in the area, all over the place, but we just couldn't find the flag. We were running short on time, so decided to hit the last 2 controls and if we had time reattack 32. Found the others no problem, came at 32 from the other direction...and there it was! We just hadn't gone quite far enough the first time. Dashed back to the finish and made it with 6 minutes to spare :)
Really fun race. Super excited about how we did. 3/74 overall, 1/17 2 person co-ed.
