Orienteering race 1:58:40 [4] 7.37 mi (16:06 / mi)
Maybury Night-O
Got our maps at 6:30 and had 30 min to plan. I planned a counterclockwise route that would hit all the CPs. I need to work on estimating how far I can travel and strategically missing CPs, but I'm always so optimistic.
Hit 51 first with a bunch of other people. Made my first mistake heading to 52. I ended up on the wrong trail, figured out where I was pretty quickly, but then I had to backtrack to hit 52. Made it to 62 no problem and then had my first major error heading to 55. I took a bearing, but I was not where I thought I was when I took said bearing, so I ended up wandering around that field for a while before hitting the CP. Should have just skipped it when I missed on the first pass. My navigation improved significantly after that, once I remembered I have to be a lot more careful at night.
My second major error was on the way to 60 from 63. The brush was very thick, so I ended up heading S to the fence to get to the pond. That worked fine, but I got to the pond and couldn't find the control anywhere. Turned out I was in a marshy area and not quite close enough to the water. Wandered around for a lot longer than I realized until I found it. Should have bailed on this one too, I need to do better at watching the time I spend looking for each CP.
Hit the rest of the CPs without any problems, finishing with just a couple minutes to spare. BF ended up beating me and he didn't run at all...shows the advantage of accurate navigation. Had a blast! Excellent course.
