Not the best weather we have had for a triathlon. It rained the entire time, temperature was in the mid-60's. Since the swim was in Lake Michigan, I opted to wear my full body wetsuit. It kept me nice and warm as we were waiting for the race to start!
During the course descirption, the route for the olympic swim course was somewhat unclear. The race director first told us one thing and then changed his mind and detailed a different loop around the buoys. This led to a fair amount of confusion. I started in a wave start with all the olympic distance women. I was generally following a group of women in front of me, since I figured they probably knew where they were going. Not the case... Ended up swimming toward the wrong buoy near the start of the swim before one of the volunteers informed the group we were swimming in the wrong direction. Bummer. Got going the right way and the rest of the swim was fine, but this cost me a decent amount of time. Should've paid better attention to the course before we started...There were some small waves during the swim. My first time swimming with waves. It was fun, although it did make sighting a bit more difficult. I caught up to BF near the end of the swim (he had started 5 min ahead of me).
I felt like it took me forever to wrestle off my wetsuit during the first transition, but my time was pretty close to BFs, so it must not have taken me that long.
On to the bike. The course was fairly flat with some rolling hills on the second half. I was with quite a few people at the start, but then all the sprint athletes turned around and I was basically by myself for the rest of the bike. Felt pretty good throughout. I was feeling my hamstrings, but I think its because I haven't been biking with my clip-ins. My hands did get cold, but the rest of me was fine. I was very happy with my average speed for the bike, especially since it was raining.
My run also went really well. I passed 5-6 people the first half and then was by myself again. Saw BF a number of times since we had to keep looping around. Wasn't able to catch him after his speedy bike though. Took me about a mile after the transition from the bike for my legs to feel normal, probably should have practiced that...
Finished 8/20 women, 30/52 overall. I was hoping to finish in under 3 hours, didn't quite make it, but I'll blame that on the swim error. Overall, very happy with my biking and running performances. And I think I have convinced BF to do a half ironman next summer...we will see :)
