KFish wanted to go for a run...legs actually felt pretty good. Shins are really tight though. Keeping up with electrolytes/water during a race makes all the difference!

Racoongaine 2017
Topo the Mountain w/ KFish

Got our maps at 9 and started planning. We decided to go around the lake first and then head N. Even though we had been around the lake last year, it seemed like that route offered better end game options.

Race started at 10 and we were off! Headed to the first flag with a large group which very quickly thinned out. Hit a mother control right off that took us to a very cool little waterfall. Zoomed around the S part of the lake, lots of trail/road and pretty minimal climb. Hit the farthest point a little over 2 hours in, which was very close to our goal. Heading back along the N side of the lake was a little rough. There were fewer trails and bigger hills, so it felt like we were moving so slowly. Navigation was clean, small error on 142 - ended up too far N and took a few minutes to locate the old brick building. Kept chugging along though and made it to our decision point (107) with a little under 2 hours left.

We had a 'short' and a 'long' option for the N section of the map. Sat down on a bench to consider our options, and since we were doing well on time decided to go for the longer route. Ended up hitting all but one of our planned CPs and finished with a few minutes to spare! Very happy with our route, pushed to the end and I don't think there were any other CPs we could've gotten without being late.

Overall, navigation was very clean. Drifted on a few bearings, but we always hit the right feature, just added a little distance. Such a nice map for a rogaine. First race where I stuck to my food plan - electrolytes on the 30 min and food on the hours. Felt a lot better than I usually do the second half of the race. Weather was great, mid-60's and overcast. Light rain for <30 min. Lot of ticks.

Finished 1st co-ed and 3rd (?) overall. Lots of fun!!

SMOC Haven Hill - Red

Started off well, zoomed around the open areas. Got to 7 and wandered back and forth for a while before spotting it way off down the trail. Overshot 9. Hit 14 the same time as W4J and we both headed to 15. Searched for way too long (it was missing) before moving on. Then apparently mispunched 16 (sorry W4J). Lost motivation after that, so plodded along through the rest of the course - nav was smooth, but I wasn't moving very fast. Not my day.

Parked at Parker Mill and ran toward Gallup on the B2B. It was closer than I thought, so we did a loop around Gallup before turning around. Nice in the sun. Only a few spots of snow on the trail.

W4J Birthday Extravaganza - Part 2!

A little colder than I prefer for biking (high 30's), but I did it for W4J :) Bundled up and surprisingly never got cold - the foot warmers were awesome. The sun was shining for most of the ride, which definitely helped. Pretty strong wind, but thankfully only in one direction. Legs felt way better than I was expecting. Overall, it was quite an enjoyable ride! And we hit our 47 km goal + a few bonus kms.

W4J Birthday Extravaganza!

Mr W. drew out a optimistic 25 km loop with 47 controls around Waterloo. Met up with W4J, Mr. W and KFish at the Discovery Center and off we went! Fun day in the woods. Temps were brisk, but I was fine as long as we were moving. I think we explored the whole park... Ended up adjusting the plan near the end when we realized the initial route was going to take too long.

Woods were generally kind of thick, but we did find a nice field.

And a huge gravel pit!

Goal for this year is to take more pictures. Next time I'll try to get some with people looking at the camera :)

Loop of the neighborhood trails, they were quite soggy. It was chilly and super windy so I bundled up...not necessary, I was way overdressed. Feeling much better!
