Vetting our red course - BF had put out streamers a few weeks ago. Everything looked good! Woods weren't nearly as wet as I was expecting after the rain this morning. Did encounter an angry hunter who followed me around for a little while...creepy. Although not as creepy as coyotes! If any streamers are missing, I blame him.

Climbing 45:00 [3]

Went up to the Madison Heights gym. So many new routes to try!! Finished a couple of 11's. And a v4 bouldering?? Didn't believe the rating on that one.

Night-o at Haven Hill

Planned a route to hit all the controls, heading W first and then looping back to the E section. The first half went really well, had a few small bobbles, but pretty clean. Then I messed up on 2 in a row and never recovered my confidence.

Headed to 33 first with BF and Tony, then we went separate ways. Hit 32, lost a couple minutes on 63 taking the road around instead of cutting through the field. On to 65, 45 and 43 with no troubles. Saw someone headed toward 45 as I was leaving, not sure who it was. Slight bobble to 51, overshot a little before realizing I had walked right by the control. There was someone wandering around this area looking quite confused. Hit 72 almost right on, I was worried about the green, but it didn't push me around that much. Heard a couple others crashing around in there, but didn't actually see them. Headed to 41, 71 and then trucked S along the trail grabbing 42 and 61. I intended to cut in from the water to grab 61, but I never saw it so turned around and attacked from the trail junction to be safe. Hit it and then on to 77.

At this point I was at an hour, which was a little behind where I was hoping if I was going to clear, but pretty good, and then it starting going downhill... Got lucky on 64, felt like I was in the right spot on the trail so just thought I'd go in to check and there it was. Then 74....ugh. I took a bearing from the wrong trail junction and wandered for much too long before turning around, couldn't see any contours under the green, so I couldn't use the features to relocate. Headed back to the trail, realized my mistake, re-attacked and found it no problem, but the damage was done. Took a bearing to 53 since I couldn't really see the contours to read the terrain...and missed it. And my confidence was shot. Decided to skip it since I was getting tight on time. Hit 54, 52, 76 and 34 on my way to the finish. No troubles, but I was just moving slowly to make sure I knew I was in the right place. Booked it from 34 to finish just in time!

Great course! Had a lot of fun and so proud of BF for taking the win :)

Canoeing 1:50:25 [3] 7.5 mi (4.1 mph)

Met up with Andy and W4J for some Fig practice. I was in the front with Andy sterning and W4J/BF took the second boat. Our configuration worked really well, we moved right along. Couldn't belive how warm it was, I was expecting colder temps.

Chased Andy and W4J around the singletrack and Badlands at ILRA. Fun ride! They are definitely stronger on the bike, so hopefully they'll be able to keep us moving quickly during Fig. Feeling good about our team :)

Orienteering 1:58:25 [3] 6.89 mi (17:11 / mi) +246m 15:28 / mi

Mr. W was kind enough to leave up the flags for the red course so we could run it a day late. Poured for the first half - I think MI was welcoming me back. The rain let up by the time we finished.

I struggled to find the "trail" through the field to the first control, but after fumbling through found 1 no problem. 1-2 was a great leg. I went through the campground and got pushed around by the green. Ended up a little too far S and overshot slightly, but realized my mistake quickly. Things went smoothly for a while after that. Maybe should have taken the trail around from 3-4?

Saw BF as I was headed toward 9. Punched and then I forgot how to orienteer... As I was headed to 10 I didn't bother reading the terrain since I just had to follow my bearing to the lake. Dashed off into the woods and apparently decided I didn't need to bother looking at my compass either. Ended up at a small swamp, was super confused for a while and finally realized I was at the W most swamp S of 8...what?? No idea how that happened. Once I realized where I was found 10 no problem.

10-11 was soooo far. Took the trails across, which turned into kind of a mess. Had to slow down at each intersection to make sure I knew where I was, which wasn't very efficient. Followed the nice hill/reentrant right to the control. Finish route wasn't great either. Ended up in the campground, which was fast, but then I had to go through that field again. Probably would've been faster to just take the trail around to the E.

Fun course! Overall, I was happy with how well I read the terrain. Now I just need to go faster while keeping in good contact with the map. And work on route choice...one step at a time.

Hiking 1:41:02 [3] 2.97 mi (34:01 / mi) +655m 20:11 / mi

Waimano Falls/Pools

Only time we hiked in the rain, more of a sprinkle really. The reason why you never see anyone with a rain jacket in HI: it's always warm, even when it's raining.

First part of the trail was along an old road, so it was wide and fairly flat. Then we decended off the ridge down to the falls. It was so muddy, and very steep. We took our time going down, trying to stay clean since we didn't have access to a shower before our flight home. We were mostly successful.

The falls were pretty underwhelming. Someone had set up a rope swing into one of the deeper pools farther downstream, so I could see the attraction in hiking out to swim, but we hadn't brought any swim stuff and the fresh water in HI has some bacteria or something in it anyway.

Going up was actually faster than going down.

3 PM

Hiking 50:15 [2] 1.79 mi (28:04 / mi) +148m 22:20 / mi

Diamond Head Crater

Still had some time to kill before our flight, so we decided to hike Diamond head (BF hadn't done this one yet). Nice views, you can see all of Honolulu from the top.

Hiking 49:19 [2] 1.87 mi (26:23 / mi) +173m 20:29 / mi

Manoa Falls

This was one of my favorite hikes. It felt like we were in the jungle. The plants were huge, and at one point there was a whole forest of bamboo. It was windy and they were all clacking together, kind of a cool sound. The falls were tall, but really more of a trickle.

5 PM

Run 50:48 [3] 3.84 mi (13:14 / mi) +481m 9:31 / mi

Ka'iwa Ridge Trail

There was a trail right near where we were staying, so we decided to go for a run to see the sunset. It was a little steeper than I was expecting, so we ended up hiking the steeper sections. Got to the top of the ridge and saw an amazing sunset behind the ridges off to the west. It looked like there was quite an extensive trail system along the small ridges near the ocean, but it was getting dark so we didn't really have time to explore. Finished up with a loop of the road. I wish I had a trail like this in my backyard!

Hiking 2:35:17 [3] 4.82 mi (32:13 / mi) +654m 22:40 / mi

Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail

This was the first day that the tops of the ridges weren't in the clouds, so we switched our plans around to do the ridge hike while it was clear. And it was a good thing we did! Turned out to be the only day that the ridges were cloud free.

Hiked up out of a valley, following a ridge all the way up (side note: at what point does a spur become a ridge? or a re-entrant a valley?). Views were great. The definition of the features was awesome, everything is just so sharp. Quite windy at the top.

Got some of the car ride in the track again - removed from time/distance.

11 AM

Hiking 55:23 [3] 2.51 mi (22:04 / mi) +316m 15:52 / mi

Makapu'u Point/Lighthouse

Paved trail up to a lighthouse (which you're not actually allowed to get near) and a decent view, mostly of the ocean. We could faintly see a couple of the other islands off in the distance. Not the most exciting hike. I guess it's a good place to watch for whales? But it wasn't whale season. Lots of people.

Hiking 31:11 [3] 0.65 mi (48:07 / mi) +132m 29:27 / mi

Crouching Lion

Really short hike with great views. Got a bit of car ride at the end of the track - subtracted from time/distance.

4 PM

Run 27:02 [2] 2.6 mi (10:24 / mi)

Got restless after sitting on the beach for too long. Short run from the campsite.

Hiking 2:09:21 [2] 5.81 mi (22:16 / mi) +103m 21:06 / mi

Ka'ena Point

Meandered out to the point walking along the sand/rocks near the shore. On calm days there are small pools you can swim in, but the ocean was no where near calm enough for swimming. The point is a wildlife sanctuary for birds and seals. Saw a couple seals, one laying on a rock in the sun and the other in the water. Trekked back along the jeep road that follows the shore.

Done with the conference, time for vacation :) Jogged over to Diamond Head. Was able to find a route that had a relatively low number of stop lights.
2 PM

Hiking 52:13 [3] 1.73 mi (30:11 / mi) +157m 23:33 / mi

Hiked Diamond Head. Not as crowded as I thought it might be. Pretty nice views from the top!

I was really looking forward to eating my banana at the top, but when I opened my backpack found that somehow my camera had ended up on top of my banana. I had one smushed banana and one camera case covered in banana goo. So diappointing.
3 PM

Run 33:11 [2] 3.17 mi (10:28 / mi) +318m 7:59 / mi

And jogged back. I didn't realize how much I had climbed on the way there, explains why my legs were feeling a little tired going up.
