Erie Turkey Trot (5k)
It was a chilly morning, low-30's with a breeze. I started a little too far back and had to weave through some people, but it spread out quickly. Felt a lot better than I expected. The goal was under 24 min so pretty happy with my time.

Trail run at McConnells Mills State Park. This was the most technical trail we have run on in a long time! Very rocky with steep ups/downs. Beautiful location, the trail was along a fast flowing river in a gorge.

Training 2

Streamers course. A mass start (there were 8 of us) with different people completing the loops in different orders. My navigation was rather sloppy. As I was getting close to 2 I was distracted by Tori, got confused about what spur I was on and went out the wrong one which let me figure out where I was. Had a very hard time finding the streamer at 3 even though I was in the right spot. The light orange flagging tape was difficult to spot in the fall foliage. I read 7 as on the side of a spur, but it was actually on the side of a reentrant. And I was in the right spot for 14, but I wasn't confident and couldn't see the streamer, so went past and confirmed. Fun course!

Orienteering 43:56 [2] 2.09 mi (21:01 / mi) +113m 18:00 / mi

Training 3

The few of us that were left went back out one more time. No streamers or anything, just points drawn on the map. I was pretty beat, so I just took it slow and enjoyed the finally nice weather! It was quite beautiful in the woods.

QOC Day 2 - Red (8.4 km)

Started with another long leg near the beginning, although I had a bit longer to plan this time. The woods were still awesome, so most of my route choice was just go straight :) Started off really well. From 7-8 I decided to take the road, which seemed to be a popular choice. I exited poorly from 10 and paralleled the road for a bit. 10-11 was probably my favorite leg though. In the past I would have been daunted by how far it was, but after NZ it didn't look that bad! Saw Kevin near 12 and then a couple short legs to the finish.

Really happy with this result, probably my cleanest run ever. I think this is a good representation of my orienteering abilities at my current fitness level. Plan for the next few months: build up my running fitness/speed.

3 PM

Orienteering 1:01:59 [3] 3.93 mi (15:46 / mi) +199m 13:38 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speed Cross 4

Training 1

The planned meeting spot was closed, so after gathering everyone and getting to a new parking lot it was a pretty late start. Greg and one other guy headed out first to hang streamers and the rest of us started shortly after them. My navigation was clean, but my legs were shot so I wasn't moving very fast. I made it to 13 before it started to get dark and cold, so I bailed to the road and jogged back to the car from there.

QOC Day 1 - Red (8.8 km)

Had the same start time as Kevin...crazy! I cut in off the trail to 1 a little early, but I was trying to plan my route to 2 and didn't want to overshoot. On the way to 2 I hit a fence that had streamers and said 'keep out.' We had been told we could enter those areas, but it seemed sketchy, so I just followed the fence around. It was a nice handrail. The woods were so awesome! Mandatory water crossing on the way to 5. There were even cinder blocks on the road through the river so my feet stayed dry. Things went pretty well through 11. And then I got stupidly lost headed to 12. I drifted on my bearing and then took forever to relocate. I haven't been that lost in a while. Pulled it back together after finally finding 12. I drifted again on the way to 14, but was able to correct right away. Went back and forth with a few others through the remainder of the course. Loved running through the white woods!
