DVOA long at Rodney scout reservation
It’s a good day when I’m only 30 seconds behind sydney! Another cool but sunny morning, but a little warmer than yesterday morning. Successfully started off slow and therefore had early success. My first bobble was on 4, I’m not sure what happened because I think I came up in the right spot but just didn’t spot the flag. Corrected eventually and moved on. Things went well through 8, including nailing a long leg and then 2 extremely vague bearing legs, so super proud of that. Bobbled 9, I was at the right gully, but too low on it and second guessed myself. The second half of the course also went well, although my legs were pretty beat. I kept my mind in it. I think running red was the right choice for my current fitness level, and means I had 3 races I’m happy with this weekend.

Sprint at DvOA Back to the woods Bellevue state park, Delaware.
First time O in Delaware, woot! Sprint went pretty well, just one bobble on the way to 3 when I got sucked to a flag I knew wasn’t mine. Lungs and throat burned from the cold air (maybe 40ish at the start?) and relative lack of running fitness. It always socks me what my pace ends up being when it feels so fast during the race. Maybe someday. Feels good to be back at an A meet and it not be 100F out.
Extra thanks to the course setters and planners who it sounds like had quite the time pulling this off. And the mappers, it was fantastic!

I can honestly say this is the most fun I’ve had orienteering this year, and probably since the pandemic shut things down too. It turned into a beautiful sunny day in the 50s. The map and course were technical but somehow I managed to read it all pretty well despite the lack of recent practice. Not perfectly clean, but mistakes were small and I successful stayed within my comfort zone and didn’t fry my brain, which almost never happens. Got a little loose at the end, but was able to keep it together.
Overshot 2 and corrected off the very long gully. 5-8 I felt I was getting pulled low, but they all worked out. The hill climb to 12 fried me a bit and got a little confused leaving, but was able to correct quickly. 14-16: I hate orienteering thru disc golf courses, they always confuse me so much! This one was mapped perfectly but still disorienting. Slowed down and avoided any disasters, but still bobbled.
Another fantastic map and course, really enjoyable day. Hopefully this orienteering success sticks harder than the orienteering failures of this summer.
