Relay on a QOC team with MaxA and barrett as the 3rd leg.

The race got off to a bit of a late start after the organizers had to deal with a number of obstacles thrown at them. Joe had a flight to catch, so we switched up the order and he went first, Max went second, and I went third.

By the time I was out there was people in the woods, but not a steady stream of people heading in the same direction as me, so it felt pretty normal. I took the safe choices utilizing the extensive trail network. I still wasnt feeling all that well after the heat killed me on the long, but I kept up a slow and steady trot. All the nav went well, and I was pretty happy with my time of 49 minutes.

We ended up 4th overall in the elite mens category.

I’m not sure how I managed to go 10+ miles on a 13k course without even finishing.

Big take aways are that I have gotten a lot better at relocating when long legs go south, so I am very happy about that. Big successes on 2 and 10. Just didn’t have the energy to keep going, and I didnt really want this to be greater than a 3 hour commitment. Should have done Rec red, which I considered.

Middle was postponed, but we honestly expected it to be completely cancelled, so we went to find some clear air closer to sacremento and rented bikes for a ride on the American River trail. Found out the event was indeed on, so we turned around and headed back up to the mountains. Probably not the best pre-race activity.

BAOC Middle Nationals

The smoke had cleared pretty significantly, although the air quality was still listed as "unhealthy".

Race went pretty well mostly with a few places for improvement. I messed up 2 and 19 - which were the same flag, both times I went there. Leaving 7 I tripped on some rocky ground and went down HARD. Nice scrapes on both wrists and my knee, and I had to sit for a minute because my knee hurt a lot. Once I got moving it loosened up, but then I also continued to mess up 8, ending up too high.

On the way to 15 I completely blanked on where I was even headed, and what I had just punched and had a moment of panic, but used my bearing to help figure out what I was headed to.

Had no oomph on the uphills due to the elevation, so I walked. Downs and flats the running was ok.

I expected the terrain to be really difficult for me, but it actually made good sense. The vegetation boundaries are the hardest for me to interpret, but there are enough other features that they can be backup more than primary navigation tools.

Middle practice. Slow map hike with mask during a slight lull in the air quality

Warmup felt awful. 4 days off was not the greatest set up for racing.

Orienteering 15:34 intensity: (12 @2) + (2:32 @3) + (29 @4) + (12:21 @5) ** 1.88 mi (8:17 / mi) +22m 7:59 / mi

Sprint at Sierra college as part of BAOC nationals.

This week at work was insane and stressful so it wasn’t a great preamble to vacation or especially racing. Flights all went well. Woke up this morning to a layer of ash on the car and an extremely hazy hour drive to the sprint. The actual venue was fairly clear but I already had a bit of a headache and just some general level of stress.

Once I got the map and started that all melted away and I was in race mode. It went pretty well, no dumb mistakes and a few tricker legs I read well. I didn’t feel like I had a whole lot of oomph but I’m still very happy with that pace. It helped it was shorter than the sprint practice I did last week.

Great job to the organizers that clearly had a stressful job with the amount of construction going on and changing the map. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
