ROC sweetened the pot by offering a just for fun mass start race on Sunday at Webster park. Had done the permanent course here, but didnt have much recollection of the park. Its not as technical as Alasa Farms, and has such a dense trail network that it was an extremely fast course, coupled with the Mass start which meant if you could find your pack you could fly.

I realized something was up with Syd when first her control numbers didn't match (but mine did) and then she went into the woods when I was on an obvious trail section. Thought maybe there was unannounced forking, but turns out she was on a blue map.

After the rush separated at about control 3, I was actually leading the Red pack through control 9, with 2 obvious people close behind. Interestingly, this actually motivated me to look and plan ahead more than I ever do, which is a habit I should get in to. At 9 I made a bad choice that allowed the 2 followers to pass me beyond where i could see them. I actually caught up to them again at 14, but thought they were coming out when in actuality they had messed it up, so I messed it up too, my only real mistake. I tried to huff it to the finish to catch up, but was just too far behind at that point, coming in 2 minutes behind. Another 60 pt effort at time of writing!

Lunch with wraps, chips, and apple cider afterwards. It was a fun event and definitely swayed us to make the trip to get in 2 sessions. Thanks again to ROC!

Decided to make the trip since this is home, so I got to visit some family too. Headed out to Sodus to arrive about half an hour before starts, but it turns out they were starting people early so pretty much started as soon as I toed the line. This meant I wasnt quite in the mental place I try to get to before a race, which led to overshooting 1. I knew it was a mistake, but it turns out it was like 4 minutes! It didnt feel that bad. I also learned that the notes were right, and following the old logging roads took more energy, at least mentally if not physically, than just straight through the woods. I got cleaner after that and thoroughly enjoyed the terrain, very runnable with an intricite spur/gully system that was quite easy to parallel error on.

Things were going really well through 9, and I was enjoying a few moments of pure orienteering bliss, which of course meant I wasn't thinking where I was going and overshot 10 and then 11, both ~2 minute mistakes. Flipped the map at 11 and was mostly clean on the way back, with the exception of 18, which I ended up at 19 and almost didn't realize it. luckily I did a double take on the number and realized my mistake.

Overall a little sloppier than I should be, but I was moving really well, planning and executing well, and ended up with my highest AP score ever, breaking 60 for the first time (helped by a recent jump in scores, and the particular mix of people at this race). I thought I might have a chance at syd, but she skunked me by 4 minutes, which goes to show if I don't clean it up I will never stand a chance.

Really really fun NRE event, with great map and course design. Thanks to ROC for making it happen!

Back to climbing season! Warmed up on 4 easy boulder routes and then attempted 8-10 top ropes at the 5,8-5.10+ level. Best finish was a 5.10-. Arms weren’t pumped but had no grip strength even for jugs.
