Circuit training 5:00 [1]

Note

Went underground! I tagged along with one of the geotechs on their inspection rounds looking at movement in the drives and taking pressure readings in the walls. It was pretty cool to learn a bit about how forces are transferred within the rock and how they manage that in planning the mining process, and then all the work they do to support the void spaces.

The mine is a total maze (and its really only a tiny mine!) and it didn't take too long to get totally confused.

Running 37:30 [3]

mine and back. still some glute tightness, but obviously things are working better to suddenly be 2 1/2 mins quicker with no extra effort.

Circuit training 5:00 [1]

token strength set

Circuit training 10:00 [3]

Token strength stuff. had planned to do more, but cos I finished work on time it was still blazing sun. decided to hide in my room till at least the sun dropped a bit, but accidentally had a nap. oops. then had way too much food at dinner to do anything afterwards.
did my hip stability stuff and some stretching so I should be fine to run again tmw.

Running 40:00 [3]

mine and back. L glute/piriformis a bit tight, but stretched out ok.

considered logging re-filling the evaporation pan. 102.6 mm is a lot of trips back and forth to the tap.

Sunday Dec 23, 2018 #

Cycling 1:18:00 [3]

River loop. Not as hot today.

Saturday Dec 22, 2018 #

Running 36:00 [3]

Easy run in Anzac park. Glute still a bit tight. Felt like i could cruise along ok which was nice.

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

physio pilates. new program.

Thursday Dec 20, 2018 #

Cycling 1:55:00 [3]

mtb in gap creek. left too late so it was really hot, and thought it was going to end up a torture test, but after I got over coottha it was fine. I was a bit of a hubbard, but its been quite a while since I've ridden single track.

Running 30:00 [2]

very easy run. planning walk-jog, but running was pretty easy to start with, so just kept going till the first hint of tightness then walk-jogged home from there.

Lame walk-jog to fix lame injury 10:00 [1]

and lame walk-jog to get home.

Lame walk-jog to fix lame injury 30:00 [1]

200/100. legs definitely want to run, so this was boring and annoying.

Friday Dec 14, 2018 #

Lame walk-jog to fix lame injury 20:00 [1]

100m walk / 200m jog. could still feel a bit going on, but nothing that lasted more than a minute or so, and nothing was worse afterwards. might try to go a bit further tomorrow.

Lame walk-jog to fix lame injury 20:00 [1]

got the ok to start doing some running progression, so busted out the lame walk-jog on 100m/100m cycle. went ok.

got the rest of my scan results back today. report for the ultrasound was as expected - a fair amount of tethering and I'll probably need a follow up injection, but will decide in Jan. MRI showed some mild tendinopathy in left hammy insertion. I also had a ct scan of my neck and there is quite a bit of degeneration around the left c5 nerve root. turns out there is a very good reason my neck hurts.

Wednesday Dec 12, 2018 #

walk 40:00 [1]

same. flies were worse today. storms all around, but nothing at site.

Tuesday Dec 11, 2018 #

Note

can feel hammy insertion (or whatever is just to the inside of that) for the first time in a while. only 1/10, but will monitor.

walk 40:00 [1]

walk back from the mine. nerviness coped well with too much sitting today. continuing with nerve flossing.
hoping to progress training level to 'lame walk-jog to fix lame injury' in the next few days.

Sunday Dec 9, 2018 #

walk 40:00 [1]

needed to do something.

still got some ache around the injection site, and some slight nervy twinges. a bit down along the inside of my hammy today. upper back is a bit tighter than it has been.

also did some more stretching, nerve flossing and yoga.

Friday Dec 7, 2018 #

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

physio pilates. avoided anything that might cause problems.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

sciatic nerve is continuing to settle, although I've still got some bruising around the injection site. twinginess down the leg is now occasional and minor.
normally I'd be getting a lot of tightness through piriformis, itb etc with this many days off training, but that doesn't seem to be happening.
continuing with gentle stretching and nerve flossing. Sitting is still bad, but we all know that sitting is evil at the best of times.

Wednesday Dec 5, 2018 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

update. stuff is definitely going on. didn't sleep last night, despite not having much pain - it seemed like the body just had too much happening.
general discomfort level in hip/pririformis is mostly moderate relative to recent flare ups. I've had a few big twinges which seem to last for 5-10mins and settle - randomly happens in hammy, calf and foot. I certainly know exactly where that nerve goes now.
taking anti-inflams and panadol to try and keep things from seizing up. doing regular gentle nerve flossing, stretching and mobilisation.
sitting is v bad.

Tuesday Dec 4, 2018 #

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

physio pilates

Note

Got a 'dynamic ultrasound' on my sciatic nerve today, where they look for adhesions which are causing nerve entrapment and all the other nastiness associated with piriformis syndrome. If they find something they then inject cortisone and saline to separate the adhesions and allow the nerve to move more freely. they did the injection - they use local to put the needle in, but it doesn't stop it hurting when the needle hits the nerve - that still feels like your toe went in a power socket. apparently the injecting process indicated that the adhesions were much worse than it had looked on the ultrasound and I may have to have another round in a month. I also can't do any proper training for a couple of weeks - just gentle pilates and some swimming (arms only to start with). also lots of gentle nerve flossing (that seems like a contradiction).
I went very wonky early on, but nurse Helen looked after me, and some jelly beans sorted me out fairly quickly. butt and leg have been a bit weird since, and feeling in my toe and foot comes and goes. lets see if this works...

Sunday Dec 2, 2018 #

Running 40:00 [3]

another furnace run. windy as well, which really fries the eyeballs.

Saturday Dec 1, 2018 #

Running 38:00 [3]

Mine and back. Temp dropped below 40 before i ran, but only just. Still somehow managed a 2 min negative split. Probably due more to my sciatic issues calming down in the last few days than any magic heat tolerance.
Forecast is for 45 tmw. Could be a good day for a swim.
