Monday Aug 27, 2018 #

Note

crazy tired and struggling to figure out what the hell is going on with work. successfully deleted a lot of emails so far.
intermittently feeling a bit rubbish, but not sure whether its just due to jetlag and not eating when my body expects me to. really hoping I don't actually get sick.

Running 38:00 [2]

Easy run in anzac park. Feeling pretty rubbish with jetlag and have some awesome cankles after the flight.

Saturday Aug 25, 2018 #

Note

missed at day thanks to the overnight flight back from Canada

Orienteering race 35:05 [5] 3.9 km (9:00 / km)

Canadian middle champs. Pretty tired before i ran but figured it would be another super technical and physical race and that everyone would be tired after yesterday. Found it heaps easier to read with 1:10000 and finally getting the hang of interpreting the contours. Even felt like i could run at race pace. Good run, just a few minor compass wobbles, but far closer to a clean run than i would have expected to be able to do in this terrain. 3rd overall.

Orienteering race 1:49:50 [5] 10.3 km (10:40 / km) +350m 9:07 / km

Canadian long champs. not a WRE, so they made the winning time for W21E the same as M21E... so 90-100mins, which had the makings of a very tough day out. Pretty happy with my run. one decent mistake on the way to 4 where I couldnt interpret the map properly, and not super confident in the first part which was all big negative terrain, steep, thick and low vis (perfect combination for confusing aussies). the second part of the course was more route choice, but heaps of steep climbs. held it together ok, and avoided mistakes in the super vague last loop. really enjoyed this course - I really like classics that take you on a big adventure. ended up 3rd overall, but 12mins behind a finnish girl (who took 10 of those in the first half of the course where I didn;t know what I was doing). one race to go.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Note
(rest day)

went for a walk up grey mountain near whitehorse.

Tuesday Aug 21, 2018 #

Orienteering race 14:50 [5] 2.5 km (5:56 / km)

NAOC sprint. Interesting area with a small tourist village, town blocks and sand dunes. Generally good run but struggled with the overprinting on the map which was very faint and missed a control. Realized at the next one and went back but lost about 30 secs. More than the margin to the win but I think Tori had the same issue. Got pretty tired in the last party of the course trying to run hard in the dunes.
Ended up second overall.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Warm up only. Bailed on warm down as we were heading out for a ride but that didn't happen for ages so i should have done a run

Cycling 2:20:00 [3]

Mtb at Montana mountain at Carcross with Marquita, Martin and Carey. Did the waynes world loop. Big climb but great views and an awesome downhill run. Very tired by the end. Enormous icecream in carcross afterwards.

Orienteering race 16:00 [4]

Naoc relay. First leg in a team with Liggo and Blair. Short easy courses around a biathlon area that also had an archery range. Half the controls were on fake animal targets. It was a bit odd. Fun run.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Arvo mtb on the grey mountain trails (north of the road) with Marquita. Great trails but my legs were bit tired.

Sunday Aug 19, 2018 #

Orienteering race 46:16 [5] 4.0 km (11:34 / km)

NAOC middle. Another tough area, similar to the end of yesterday but with a few more identifiable features to work with. Very tired from yesterday and decided to take it super carefully and avoid losing time. Mostly managed that. Just a couple of mid leg wobbles getting pushed around by green, but every control was where i expected it to be... quite an improvement on yesterday. Even got into a bit of race mode at the end.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

Saturday Aug 18, 2018 #

Orienteering race 1:39:40 [5] 9.0 km (11:04 / km)

NAOC long. Super tough race, mainly physically for the first part and then a crazy hard loop at the end. Lost fair chunks of time on 2 controls and a few smaller mistakes but it was a hard dayfor everyone and finished 5th overall. Happy to have survived.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

Cycling 40:00 [3]

Ran out of go today so just a short lap of the hill above the brewery to earn our beers.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2018 #

Cycling 3:00:00 [3]

Beowulf loop at silver star with Dan and Greg. Awesome trails and heaps of fun chasing Dan though the creek section.

Tuesday Aug 14, 2018 #

Cycling 1:45:00 [3]

crawford trails. rough and rocky. a fire has been through the area a few years ago and its all still a bit of a wasteland.

Running 30:00 [3]

token run in the evening to remind my legs about running. not as bad as expected.

Monday Aug 13, 2018 #

Cycling 3:30:00 [3]

three blind mice at Penticton. probably the best trails so far, except for the big adventure days. nice and cool still, but an odd combination of cold mist and smoke haze. trails were a great mixture of flowy stuff and rocky technical stuff that I could still ride, although I still walked plenty and lost it on a blown out scree shute. starting to feel like Im recovering from my crash on day 1.
2 post ride winery visits.

Note

probably should try some running before next week.

Sunday Aug 12, 2018 #

Cycling 2:45:00 [3]

Rose valley. super smokey with all the fires, and we had the fire fighting chopper filling its bucket from the lake in the middle of the ride area. after yesterdays change with lots of storms with heaps of lightning and no rain caused the fires it was 16C with no wind today.
mostly good trails, but the black runs we had planned were so steep and loose that even dan found them mostly unridable.

Saturday Aug 11, 2018 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

The local trails from our place in kelowna. Super flowy. No view because of all the smoke. Got chased home by a storm that bypassed us in the end anyway.

Friday Aug 10, 2018 #

Cycling 2:45:00 [3]

Morning ride at pineview. Lots of twisty flowy trails. Nice change after some of the big stuff but iit would get boring top ride it too often.

Orienteering 48:00 [3]

O training at McQueen lake. Great terrain. Took a little while to very into the map at the start. I was a little nervous because there was a lot of fresh looking bear shit.
Running felt heaps better than expected given the amount of cycling in the last two weeks.

Thursday Aug 9, 2018 #

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Late afternoon ride on the hill at kamloops between the temp dropping below 40 and it getting dark. Awesome flowy trails. Saw some deer and a gopher snake.

Wednesday Aug 8, 2018 #

Cycling 5:00:00 [3]

Westside trails at Williams lake. Bit of an adventure ride. These trails obviously don't get as much traffic as the fox hill side and there was lots of dead fall. Now have a whole new set of bruises from carrying my bike.
Only cattle and birds today, which is quite ok cos the signs atthe trail head said there had been bear and cougar sightings.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2018 #

Cycling 1:45:00 [3]

Late afternoon ride at Williams lake. Nice flowy trails. Super fun.

Monday Aug 6, 2018 #

Cycling 5:30:00 [3]

Big day out in the south chilcotins. Spectacular mountains. One of the best rides I've done.
No bears, but i think i may have run over a chipmunk.

Sunday Aug 5, 2018 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]

Rest of the ride from yesterday that got cut short by my bike breaking. Seemed to do a lot of pushing up the hill, only to carry my bike back down the trails cos they were way too hard. Saw another bear, and a snake.

Saturday Aug 4, 2018 #

Cycling 2:30:00 [3]

Mtb in north Whistler. Fun trails and some cool north shore stuff. Still strugglinga bit after the crash last Saturday. Thought i could survive without painkillers by now but I was wrong. Planned ride cut short when my freehub lost the will to live. Saw a bear on the way back to the car.

Thursday Aug 2, 2018 #

Cycling 3:30:00 [3]

Mtb at pemberton with Mick. Dan got to join the hike-a- bike fun when he tried to follow Mick down a double black run.

Wednesday Aug 1, 2018 #

Cycling 3:30:00 [3]

Mtb at diamond head. Plenty of trails that were too hard for me so walked a fair bit. Nice forest
