Running 1:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:00 / km)

arvo run on coottha with Wendy and Clare. similar to yesterdays, but ran up the main track instead of Bobs, and turned left halfway down frosties and ran out through the botanic gardens. quite warm and humid, and made it home just before the storm hit.

Running 1:10:00 [3]

longish run with Rachel from my place. was meant to be my housewarming run, but only Rachel turned up, and she had to head off straight after. oh well.
Run was good - just did a shortish run cos Rach is doing the mountain running champs tomorrow. through anzac park and across the bridge, past the gardens and down to slaughter falls, up Bobs track to the summit and down frosties to chapel hill then back through anzac park. plenty of climb to put me in the hurt box, and rach is quicker on the uphills and flats. the only time I stood a chance of running at a comfortable pace was on the rough downhills. we both had some stackage - I gave my ankle a good stretch and Rach took a slide in anzac park and scored some good gravel rash on her shin. tired at the end, and I think I'll be having a little nap later today.

Note

still feeling pretty sore after the weekend. popped the massive blister I'd run with on sunday and found a disturbing amount of thick brown ooze. gross!

Orienteering race 1:27:12 [5] 8.45 km (10:19 / km) +265m 8:55 / km

WOC long trial - Lively's Bog.
Bit of a fail. Didn't have a disastrous run, but just not strong enough at the moment to run a classic well.
Went left on 2, but ended up above the control but thought I was below so had an extra trip to the top of the hill. a couple of minutes blown there. then miss-read the gullies around 3 and lost a bit more time. did the next section ok, but struggled on the hills to 7. Opened up the map on the way to 8 and was surprised to see the course nearly done, but then blew heaps of time at 8. had picked up a nearby control, and took it really carefully from there, but must have just missed it, and ended up doing a bit of a tour and blowing another 4 mins. finished the rest of the course ok, but just not fast enough. Even without that time loss I still wasn't quick enough.
Only conselation is that unlike easter I was able to push myself in these races, where as a month ago I was totally flat and not really able to run hard at all.

As a side note - I wasn't particularly impressed with this race as a long distance trial. After talking it up as a really tough race it was probably about 1.5km too short.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

warm up. warm down was not possible.

Orienteering race 16:41 [5]

WOC trial sprint - UTAS launceston campus.
After a cold morning it was nice that the fog lifted and it warmed up just before the start. Had a good race, and managed to stay ahead of the navigation enough to avoid much time loss. miss read the direction out of one control (started heading from 4 to 17) but only got about a metre. Caught Sarah about half way round, but she was running fairly erratically, so best to ignore. would have been nice to be able to run a bit faster.

Orienteering race 36:27 [5] 4.72 km (7:43 / km) +135m 6:45 / km

WOC middle trial at Ben Bullen.
Legs were feeling a bit busted after this mornings race, and didn't like the warm up too much. Didn't have the greatest start to the race - I didn't really find that anything on the way to the first control made much sense. Lost about 2 mins here - mainly just hesitating and trying to figure out what I could relocate off. Got going through the next section in the plantation, but continued to struggle with the map - seemed to be massively under-mapped, but maybe thats cos I'm used to Erics maps.
Caught Shannon on the run across to the spectator control, and ran with her till the end. Certainly helped me run a bit faster at the end when I was getting tired. Again - legs didn't really get going. Just not fit enough to handle the heavy terrain. Pity about the map.

Running warm up/down 50:00 [2]

both races

Running 33:00 [3]

a short run in anzac park, in the dark and rain, after a long day of field work in the rain. legs felt surprisingly ok given how much walking I've already done today.

Orienteering race 1:20:00 [3] 9.0 km (8:53 / km)

badge event at mundoolan. plan was to have a nice practice run before next weekend. ended up having a 'maybe thats got the mistakes out of the way' run instead. issues with compass, issues with not paying enough attention, issues with reading stuff in the circle, issues with running longer than 70 mins.
on the bright side, running is improving, so bring on next weekend hey!

Running intervals 20:00 [5]

intervals - 8 x ~450m. similar to last week, but ran with my new garmin 405, which wasn't telling me the stuff i needed to know, so didn't know how long the recoveries were. eventually gave up trying to look for timed recoveries and just waited till heart rate was below 140. times were between 95 and 99 secs. haven't bothered fighting with it to get the splits back yet.
I think I need to spend a bit more time learning how to drive the garmin -at the moment it seems to think it knows what I want, but is always wrong.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

run to and from the oval, a little less eventful than last week.
got to the park near bbc a little earlier this week, and found that it was overrun by auskick. still did intervals around the oval, but had some errant 8 yr olds to dodge as well (although their parents were even more random).

Note
(injured)

I seem to have picked up a case of 'driving shins/ankles', as described by Blair post easter trip. I've been doing some survey work this week, and have been either driving slowly or walking through long grass all day - muscles on the front of my shins and ankles are really sore!

Running 1:00:00 [3]

night run on coottha with Dan. made the mistake of advertising it, then had to wait around for ages cos we'd got home early and could have run early, then nobody showed up. oh well.
cold out for may, but not cold enough for a long sleeved running shirt, at least after the first 10mins. I'm still hopeless at picking the right clothes for running in cool/cold weather cos it happens so rarely up here!.
wasn't feeling particularly energetic after a day of field work, but plodded around. we did the normal start to the top of the zigzag track, then ran straight back down telstra and back through the streets.

Orienteering 20:37 [4]

sprint training at yeronga. course set by wendy. got there late, so had a very token warm up. started badly (impassable wall covered by the circle), then couldn't see the tape on the next one. got going after that, but the long leg up to 9 was a killer. better once I got back in the buildings. really struggled without contacts in today. turns out eyesight isn't over-rated on super technical sprint maps!
nearly as token warm down.

Running intervals 15:00 [5]

Intervals at the park near BBC, on the footy oval (which is lit), and about 450m (and very muddy tonight). did 8 in 2 sets of 4 with 30 secs rest between ints and 2 mins between sets. times were 97, 97, 97, 97, , 97, 98 (had been beginning to think my watch was doing something stupid), 99, 99. the last ones really hurt and there was no way I was going any faster.
not as bad as I'd thought it might be, but heaps of room for improvement.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

run to and from the park. took a short cut through SMT on the way there and back, and got nailed when I tripped over a little stone wall in the dark. graze on ankle and sore shoulder. oh well, could have been much worse!

Running long 1:25:00 [3]

long run in toogum state forest near hervey bay, mostly on mtb tracks. raced dan and ash through a few tracks at the start where there were enough rough pinch climbs for me to get ahead occasionally. looks like a nice enough forest - pretty runnable, with enough detail for an ok orienteering map. might be worth the local club having a look at mapping it.
