Running 30:00 [3]

beach run at evans head. had planned on a surf, but it was flat and windy when I got down to the beach, so the board got ditched. ran up the beach for a while, alternating between soft sand, hard sand and ankle deep in the water. really nice run, but when I turned around after 20mins found that I had a nasty blood blister under my right big toe. managed to run part of the way back, but had some other blisters starting too, so walked the rest. left foot was fine, but I don't think I'll be running again for a couple of days.
hopefully the surf is better tomorrow!

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

mtb with dan on his new 'afternoon ride' loop. up the front of cootha as far as where the road splits, then drop down into slaughter falls, up brians to the lookout, down the dream to chapel hill and back through anzac park (including enough laps of the pump track to get really dizzy). nice ride, and quite technical riding - no nice groomed trails in that lot!

Running 52:00 [3]

not long run with Rachel from my place. piss poor turnout from the cyclones.
ended up doing a short run cos my toe is still really sore (blood blister under toenail popped yestie - gross!), just through anzac park and around toowong.

Running 45:00 [3]

home from work. was nearly a really fun run, but my new shoes decided to chew a hole in my toe. ow.

Orienteering race 1:03:20 [5] 8.4 km (7:32 / km) +280m 6:28 / km

Qld champs day 2. Started a bit more calmly than yesterday, and wasn't quite in the zone, but just tried to stay concentrated and keep running hard. lost a bit of time getting pushed around in the green on the way to 2, then overshot 5 cos I'd assumed it was on a little side creek where I'd see the control as I ran past, but instead it was tucked down at the bottom of the earthbank. got too high, and just as I was realising my stuff up I nearly stood on an enormous black snake - its amazing how such encounters give you awesome powers of levitation. then had to get back past the snake to run back down the creek. got my shit together after that, and made sure I read the control descriptions.
had a couple more little wobbles, some dodgy map related, but nothing major. generally happy with the run, and pleased (and surprised) to take the overall win by 12mins. hope I can keep some decent form going till aus champs, its been a while since I've felt as good racing.

Orienteering race 25:51 [5] 4.0 km (6:28 / km) +100m 5:45 / km

Qld champs day 1. started the day a bit disorganised, and was late getting to the event. (realised as I got about 30mins away that I'd forgotten the trophy). warm up was running like a headless chook back and forth to the start. picked up the map and realised the first control was straight down into the creek and bolted. bit of a hesitation in the detail in the circle, but it was enough to get my head into gear. took off again and crashed my way around the rest of the course on compass. started dying a bit on the last few controls but just tried to keep running hard to the finish. pretty happy with the run - probably my best race this year, particularly in keeping the speed high for the whole course. great to feel like I was going so fast after the slow marshes of norway!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [3] 4.7 km (12:59 / km)

Woc tour day 5. went out for a run with the other aussies who weren't running the middle final. nice course, but forgot brain. stupid mistake on 2, then got to 4 and realised that it was one of the controls on the butterfly of the long (so therefore I knew where I was) and proceeded to lose about 5-6mins on the next one. 7 was on a knoll above the control I massively stuffed in the long final, and near where I'd got to before things went wrong, so I thought I'd give it another go. fail. another epic lostness on the slope and relocated in exactly the same place as the other day. got the shits with that, and headed off on a leg that had exactly the same route as the one I'd taked the wrong route on the other day. at least made sure I got it right this time. got through the next few ok, but then was nearly home and turned down the hill too early (on the really easy one near the finish), and had a massive climb back up the hill. got passed by 2 midgets in the finish chute. ah well.

Running 20:00 [2]

easy morning run before the long final, with team physio Victoria. few stretches. beautiful morning, and quite warm compared to the rest of the time we've been here.

Orienteering race 1:41:29 [5] 9.9 km (10:15 / km) +530m 8:05 / km

WOC long final. good run, but not great. a couple of small wobbles going into controls, and one decent mistake - lost the plot on the second last control of the butterfly thing, and couldn't relocate - probably about 3 mins. mainly just felt like my legs hadn't recovered enough from the qual race, and really struggled the whole way. was fairly un-impressed that they ran us up a ski jump at the start of the second loop - that was just mean!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]

before the race, and a very little jog after.

Running 20:00 [3]

just and easy run to loosen the legs before this afternoons long qualifier.
4 PM

Orienteering race 53:58 [5] 5.7 km (9:28 / km) +200m 8:03 / km

WOC long qualifier. was feeling optimistic going into the race, and figured that a clean run would get me through so my plan was just to take it carefully and not make mistakes. generally managed that, and all the controls kept popping up where I expected. had a slight wobble on 7, where I was a bit low on the spur, but maybe only 30secs. lost a couple of minutes on the long leg to 8, where I missjudged the route choice options and took the one that was definitely the worst. other than that it was just a fairly epic slog - plenty of marsh, and some really steep climbs. thought when I finished that I should be ok, but hadn't realised how much time I'd lost on the long leg. made it ok, so job done.
took 2 gels today - one before the start and one halfway. thinking that the final is going to be a 1 + 3 gel race.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

warm up, including a short run around the warm up map (didn't want to do too much to tire the legs), then a jog after - calves were cramping a bit!

Running 25:00 [3]

easy morning run with a three hill reps.

Sunday Aug 8, 2010 #

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

another short run on the model area, with kathryn. swim in the creek below the lake after. nice sunny day, and the marshes are getting drier each time we go out... probably going to rain soon then.

Orienteering 46:00 [3]

training with Kathryn on Vassfjellet, doing part of the session set by chris forne. stuffed up a couple and re-did one. a few other mistakes that were a bit stupid. a bit frustrating, but I guess its good to have a few mistakes as a reminder of how hard it really is, and also about how preparing for a later afternoon race is a bit different to a mid morning one. stupid brain was definitely not concentrating!

Orienteering 35:00 [3]

short training on the model event. nice area with a good variety of controls. having big flags to find made it so much easier it felt like cheating! time to ease off now, although first race isn't till tuesday.

Wednesday Aug 4, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3]

control picking. some flags out, but also just extra circles on the map. mostly good, but had a few wobbles in the lower visability stuff.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

a course at Iladalen. nice. took lots of photos.

Orienteering 57:00 [4]

training at nordmarka. awesome terrain. a couple of loops at the top of the plateau then a long downhill section. had a bit of a compass fail on one, but everything else was fine. so much better than oringen terrain! fantastic area - some of the best terrain I've run on anywhere!

Running warm up/down 1:00:00 [1]

trek up the hill to the start and run back down the track.
