Gym 45:00 [3]

Race Elements. it was unload week, and after the weekend I wasn't sure how much I'd be able to do, but I pretty much did the normal program - just a bit lighter on the leg press.

Note
(rest day)

massage today. legs were pretty sore, but nothing major wrong.

Running 22:00 [2]

slow lap of the uni. did part of the warm up run with Olly and Jamie who were doing intervals. pretty happy with how I was running - generally not too sore, but the last couple of minutes everything started to get quite tight.

Cycling 1:10:00 [1] 28.0 km (2:30 / km)

very cruisy ride through toowong into the city and around to kangaroo point and back the same way. legs felt ok riding, but hadn't improved much when it came to walking again afterwards. hoping for a short run tomorrow.

Running race 5:49:00 [3] 52.0 km (6:43 / km) +1750m 5:45 / km

Glasshouse 50 ultra. The course starts by running straight up mt beerburrum, then does 2 25k laps (clockwise, then ac). The run (walk) up the mt was a bit shit, cos its really steep - fine for the walk up, but smashes your legs on the way back down, so my quads were hurting from the first couple of k.

first half of the main lap was quite flat, and the second part a bit hillier and rougher. generally a good mix of fast fire trail which is good for getting some ks out of the way, and single track, walking track, rough stuff etc, which keeps it interesting. first lap felt really good, but started to get a little tired at the end, and had some tummy troubles.

third quarter sucked. heaps of hills, and legs were really starting to get tired, and took a wrong turn and added about a k and a bit (and really feeling that my longest training run was 2hrs!). got a bit of a lift at the main aid station when they said it was only 12k to the finish (had thought it was 16), and some nice flat roads made it easy to keep a steady pace. and I hit the gels in the last part of the race (mainly just had food and sports drink till then), and got a good lift. realised when I got to the last check at 5.30, and they said it was only 3k left that I was going to get in under 6 - yay!

Legs were really sore on the last lap - especially each time I started running again. feet ok - only one decent blister on my little toe. hopefully after a few days I'll be able to walk normally again.

Dan was super support crew. magically appeared at every checkpoint with lots of food and gels. Thank-you!

Running 20:00 [2]

just an easy jog to wake the legs up. still pretty tired and sore after 10 hours in the glasshouse yesterday.

pilates 1:00:00 [2]

new instructor - very excessively camp, but the class was actually ok. will have to decide whether I can cope with the annoyance factor of listening to mr priss, or whether its enough to stop me going to my prefered class.

Gym 50:00 [5]

Race Elements. Load week.

Friday Jul 17, 2009 #

Cycling 1:32:00 [3] 43.0 km (2:08 / km)

River loop with Dan and the other guys. nice and cruisy (for them) which meant not too hard for me! was all good except for the hills, where my legs were very lacking after yesterdays gym session. coffee at poppy's was poor.

Gym 50:00 [5]

Race Elements with Kathy and Bec. Kathy was having some asthma issues, so I got smashed instead. told Bec the core work we did last week was too easy, and was punished for my insolence.

Running 38:00 [3]

recovery run. feeling a bit flat. quads especially tired after gym this morning.

Tuesday Jul 14, 2009 #

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

different instructor this week, and class was heaps easier.

Running intervals 16:00 [4] 4.0 km (4:00 / km)

same as last week.2x2k. got stuck at uni, so I was late, and Olly had already done a couple of intervals by the time I got there. Thought I was going ok on the first one, but was really slow, and just got slower. not sure why I was so slow, but I was pretty hungry all afternoon, and my hip hasn't been feeling any good, so maybe its a combination of lack of go and particularly crapped out biomechanics.
7.58 and 8.05

Running warm up/down 45:00 [3]

Monday Jul 13, 2009 #

Cycling 45:00 [3]

took the ss out for a spin in gap creek. miss timed a log jump badly (still getting used to not riding a duelly) and got a flat on the front. changed that, but then the back tyre went down as well :-(
long walk back to the car.
I think I need to get tubeless.

Orienteering race 1:02:35 [4] 9.2 km (6:48 / km) +225m 6:04 / km

state event at Mundoolan. Clare and I talked each other into going to the event yesterday, and quite glad I did cos it was pretty nice running, and a good course set by gary flynn. The lantana has grown a lot on the map, not so much that its hard to get through, but it reduces visibility a lot, and there were a few controls where running along the slope at the right height should have been enough to see the control, but lantana thickets reduced vis and made it tricky. problem was it was a bit random, and attackpoints were pretty far away from anything. got about 2/3 of the way round at about 40mins, and decided that I should be able to get in under 60, but some wobbles on a couple of controls near the end (including being way too low on the second last) caused a bit of a blowout in time. Good to get a hard run in terrain in, and will need to do some more O in the next few weeks, cos technique (especially compass) is a bit rusty.

Running long 1:25:00 [3]

longish run in gap creek from clare's place. with kirra and clare for a while (rachel and ian dropped us really early), and then by myself when k and c went home. wasn't running too badly but felt really tired - and didn't even watch the tour last night :-(
hip a little sore, but a swim in clares pool made it go numb for a while.

Cycling 1:20:00 [2]

part river loop with some of the slower riders from Simon's "muppet to champion" course. took out Dan's SS mtb so that it wasn't too slow. breakfast at the coffee club was disappointing.

Cycling 1:10:00 [3]

mtb ride in gap creek with helen and kirra. took the ss out - so much fun. Dan is definitely not selling it! needs some new tyres though - dan swapped the crappy ones off his new cannondale and they've just got no grip so I was sliding all over the place.
Taught helen how to get over logs... using my exceptionally muppety technique of speed + optimism = bounce over log. at least its faster than walking!

Running 41:00 [3]

quick run after watching le tour

Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 #

Gym 45:00 [5]

Race Elements. new program. hard, but not too smashed now.

Running intervals 16:00 [5] 4.0 km (4:00 / km)

intervals in the rain. ran with Olly cos neither of us was smart enough to bail. 2x2k with jog/walk recovery.
7.46 (164, 190)
7.52 (177, 198)

Running warm up/down 45:00 [3]

Monday Jul 6, 2009 #

Cycling 1:13:00 [3] 35.0 km (2:05 / km)

river loop after work.

Saturday Jul 4, 2009 #

Running long 2:15:00 [3]

long run from Rachels place with Rachel, Clare and Richie. Ran the track around enoggera reservoir, which took about an hour 10, so then turned around when we got back near the dam wall and ran it in reverse. nice and hilly, and still pretty muddy. managed a slight negative split which was good, and felt pretty good running until after 2hrs, which is a good sign for upcoming projects.
